It's extremely rare for defenders to win the Ballon d'Or. In saying that, Hansen was better a better defender than Owen was a striker (if that makes sense). Besides, Thierry Henry never won the world player of the year award and he's miles better than Owen.

leon laird As a player I'm sure I made it clear he had a very good career and was a very vry good player, But Jesus Christ he's a shit pundit. He just grabs the opinions of other pundits and interrupts them every 2 seconds, without ever giving any indication as to how an incident could have been prevented. Watch him next time and you'll see. Compare him to Gary Neville who I hated as a player, and you always understand the subtle little nuances that lead to a goal or opportunity.

I've learnt a fair bit from Hansen down the years actually. There's only so much you can say when explaining a goal, because most defensive errors are the same ones repeated over and over, eg/ players switch off, are out of position, aren't aware of their teammates, etc etc. They've massively scaled back the analysis recently as well, he used to go to 10/15 seconds before the goal and show the build-up, now it's just a quick replay. So yeah I agree the analysis is poor but it's not his fault.

You people, Owen and all the others who burned bright, for their first half and tailed off through injury or whatever. We never hear it about the Shearers of this world lol Seriously Maradona wrote about Owen, he was never gonna wax lyrical about Alan Shearer though was he, and his Premier League records. In the world, outside of our wretched tastes, Owen is and was very well respected, and was feared by the greatest defenders. He also has a Balor D'or too. SO history cements him as a great regardless of our fickle tastes. The likes of Shearer and most of these English lads that are put on a high above Owen for "career consistency" are not respected world wide by top footballing countries, and struck little to no fear into defenders in he world game. But what can we expect from a fan base who believed for midfielders Gerrard and Lampard were superior to Scholes and Gascoigne as talents lol Who repeatedly proved over perhaps 70years, they never know what is good, from a Johny Haynes , to now. And then the rest of the world has to explain to them how they have overlooked and on occasions disrespected and squandered another player that a better more competent footballing country and elite players valued much more than ourselves. English people produce some fantastic players, time proves it, yet their coaches and their fans seemingly genetically or culturally, cannot not be trusted at all, to identify talent when they have a good thing in front of them. Jack Grealish is the latest proof of something that repeats itself again and again and again. Incompetent judges of talent who reuse to do the necessary work to visually identify talent first and formost which is the coach and the fan,, and secondly the part for the coaches, to engineer a team around the talent. It's from the armchair fan all the way to the managers. Their vain opinions are not be trusted, or even listened to, And we as English people would do better to recognis our fault, and begin the necessary work to correct it, as any people who is worth it's salt in the football world would do. It took twenty years of to fix the humiliations to Soviets, repeated humiliations, in terms of improving technique and certain tactical parts of the game. Through that good work, we began to win things at club level from the 60s unil the 80s. Even one world cup abeit in our own back yard with some suspicious decisions to help along the way. I wonder how long it will take and what it would take for us to admit our failings in regards to individuals and recognising special players and what to do with them. Or will we be putting the magical 10s out wide or on the subs bench for another 100 years. They could call it Alan Pardew syndrome. I don't know what to do with one of the worlds best players when I have him.

Owen was a great player, a great striker indeed. Can't say that for Roberts though :/ Owen was clearly on his last leg that season, badly of form because of the amount of injuries he got and from his past but on his day he'd be banging in the goals so that was harsh from Hansen as Owen clearly wasn't at his best.
