The volume is set quite loud so down overcook it into distortion, it should just be comfortable at the start......

This is one of Alan O'Brien's excellent drone videos captured early in 2017 with 4444 and 7008 hauling 565 up to the top of the Pukerua Bank. Note the great evening light from behind as the trains approaches, and then drops quickly into shadow as it passes by the camera is turned into the setting sun. Alan made a number of great drone shots but it wasn't until some time later I began trying to build some homemade sound tracks that could be realistic stereo.
After initial trials I realised that just adding a ground based recording on was far from what was required for realistically having the viewer think that they were at the location of the drone itself. So on I went and spent several days trialing until I began to get suitable results.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
For those wishing to do this on their own drone shots here are some basic tips.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Set up and get familiar with a good quality multi layer stereo editor.
Make lots of QUALITY stereo recordings of not only various loco classes under various tasks and loadings but also make a selection of environmental recordings of road vehicles, cars and trucks of different types. Motor bikes would be good also.
Look carefully at the drone video to be worked on for anything that makes a noise, trees, surf sounds around coastal areas, traffic scenes that require layers of various types can be made up to work with the video track.
Then set up the separate tracks of sounds and vary them independently according to the distance and amplitude at the time.
This short video ended up with 7 separate merged layered tracks which took me a couple of days of experimental effort, so as you can see it is quite arduous.
Your feedback on this project would be great. Regards Mike
