Very cool to see someone who I consider a classical trombone have such a developed doodle tongue and basic concept of how to develop all of the various multiple tonguing techniques. I guess many musicians of this generation often were able to play both classical and jazz/commercial styles at a high level.

@rumbler0 The "ka" articulation is done with the back of the tongue striking the soft palate. It produces the "k" attack. The vowel "a" (as in "Ka") is the sound of the trombone which replaces what would otherwise be the "ah" sound made by the vocal cords". Therefore ta-ka is actually t-k.

Thanks Mr. Raph: This is the best explanation ever! Simple, clear and understandable. Been trying to learn how to doodle tongue for years. Now I finally understand. Thanks for sharing.

"ta ka" illustrates the double tongue attack. . The vowel (a) is the trombone note... the consonants (t and k) are the initial attack of each note. Pronounce t and k (with an indefinite vowel) when practicing with or without the mouthpiece. .

A good lesson on the various rapid tonguing techniques for brass players. Since you have a following, I think it would be useful to expand this lesson to include slow dbl-tonguing techniques. I.e, that speed which would substitute for rapid single-tonguing without sounding like dbl-tonguing.The reason? For those who don't have a rapid single tongue technique, but who are required to play passages which would normally be single-tongued.The challenge being to make all notes sound equally tongued.

@LordoftheHobbits Try single tonguing a few notes (Ta Ta Ta Ta) and then try to match it with Ka Ka Ka Ka. Once attained, alternate them (Ta Ka Ta Ka). Remember you are pronouncing the consonant and the sound of the trombone is the vowel. Alan

SWApilot94. Dude, you should check Alan Raph's resume, Google his name. "Sign up to give lessons in a music store???" Not that there's anything wrong with that but Alan is world renowned player. A little beyond a music store teacher.

Tongue wherever it feels comfortable... against the teeth, between the lips... (The lower the notes, the further out the tongue). Practice with the trombone not just the mouthpiece. Talk to other players that do it well.

@ikeuser A lot of players use a double tongue articulation for triple tonguing as you do. I don't understand your reference to "first and last" in swing time. Tell me more and perhaps I can learn something. One thing I do however is when there is a group of 4 notes (followed by a rest) requiring an accent on the 4th note... I articulate Ta ta ka Ta which gives me an automatic accent where it is required.

I recently bought Arban's Famous Method for Trombone. As I read through, the book talked about tonguing using the syllables "tu", "tu-ku", and "tu-tu-ku". How do you think this compares with your method of "ta", "ta-ka", and "ta-ta-ka", and why?

Mr. raph. I wanted to know if the da-dle articulation is any way relavant to the "doodle tonguing" technique and is it the key to smooth lagato playing , or the style that is done by bob mcchesney ?

Not a strong point of my technique. Try using the vowels aaa to eee along with the lip slur section of the Arban book. Better yet ask someone who does it well.
