Alan Watts used to spend time writing at the Ramakrishna Monastery. I didn't know that until a mysterious force led me to that same spot for regular meditation. One day a monk pulled me aside and told me about Alan Watts and Aldous Huxley spending time there. Love it....

It's almost clear to me that no single mainstream religion or single popular doctrine can be all things to all people. There is far too much variety in human experience to allow that to happen. Therefore it becomes necessary to view all such claims of absolute truth with wide eyed skepticism. In my opinion Christianity must be scrutinized all the more carefully since its claims are so vehement.

You are correct in some ways. Religion has failed mankind far too often, but this fact does not obscure the reality of a Creator; a loving Creator of love, justice, wisdom and power. his name is Jehovah. Jesus said that the truth would set you free. It has my wife and I. As far as individuals being the foundation, what has mankind done on its own merits in accomplishing world peace? Nothing. Eight billion opinions are chaos. Mankind needs a spiritual leader; Jesus Christ, and he will only be found among God's people, the faithful and discreet slave class that guides Jehovah's people.

Pure conditioning. The unconditional life is what true spirituality is. You cannot reach it through conditioning. Religion is the revolving door that sucks you in and spits you out because it's a writer chasing it's own tale. You are true religion, the path is here now. God streams through all. Skillful means It is obvious to anyone involved in spiritual practice and development that some sort of method is needed in order to accomplish ones aims. From a Buddhist point of view it is called an implementation of skillful means. In this tradition it is understood that all different kinds of methods such as meditation, analysis, recitation, prayer and visualization used are not the ultimate truth. Nevertheless, they are absolutely essential for the practitioner in order to reach the intended realization of the state of ultimate truth. It is for this reason the concept of two truths are spoken of within the Buddhist context. In reality the two truths is one and the same truth but we are forced by the nature of our temporary state of ignorance to rely on temporary methods in order to transcend the temporary reality and reach the definitive state of non-dual reality beyond. We have no other choice but to work with what we have at hand, right here and now. They are regarded as skillful for the reason that they have been provided by someone who have taken the path to its completion, the Buddha himself. These methods have been proven to be very effective although their nature are of a temporary nature, -like a boat we use in order to cross over a river to the other shore. Upon the arrival on the other side the boat is not needed any longer and is then discarded. It is for this reason we can quite categorically say that spiritual traditions provide with all kinds of man-made tools to use as a means towards the transcendence of the temporary reality. These tools includes things such as prayers, visualizations, stories, yogic practices, meditation, scriptures, mantras, etc. As long as the tradition also teach the nature of these tools to be of a temporary and not absolute nature there’s no reason to be alarmed. The problem with extremism and dogmatic clinging becomes a serious impediment or obstacle when we don’t understand the temporary nature of all the different spiritual tools, or methods, we use along the path towards the ultimate state. Then we are no longer on a spiritual path but on path of dogma and extremism. From that position we soon fall under the poisonous spell of politics and worldly ambitions instead.

Many people are just lazy learners. If they can go to church and check ✅ mark a few traditions they do, then they can proclaim themselves as totally enlightened and Perfected. Which is their excuse to cover up their laziness and achieve the benefits of adulation from others. It's described as Self Righteousness and Hypocrisy, but good luck trying to convince the Average Sheeple 🐑🐏 person to listen about Hypocrisy and Self Righteousness. They didn't even listen to Jesus.

I agree with some and disagree with some. Watts says Moses and the law was not divinely inspired, then gives examples of divine inspiration or whatever you want to call it. So what's the difference, between his mic and moses tablets. Difference is we can be receivers or transmitters. Yes we are biased in our reception of info and may be biased in transmission. For we are human. But he did the best and he could for the time as Watts did for his. Yet he doesn't believe Moses. That's a matter of BELIEF. He believes the eastern mystics and western philosophers. And not the western tradition. That's okay. But the key difference for me here comes in external or internal God. Watts INSISTS we are God and gods and to imagine ourselves as God. I see no problem in not being God but God working through us at times. He kind of does. I like him a lot but i think (ironically to what he believes and has experienced) it's another ego trap. I agree with a lot of the monopoly on the divine through pediatalizing Christ. But then you always have Islam sir and other options that throw away your belief juadeo christian thinking. Anyway. Thanks to Watts. Especially the lightness of delivery and through which he carried himself. Lot lots to learn still.

And how does one who is staunchly atheist explain the spontaneous mystical experiences that are had? Bad meat in a can? Contaminated wine? If we are going to hold science as the ultimate truth litmus, then our approach to the so called spiritual must also be approached in its entirety in order to form a belief backed by an imperical understanding of the matter. IOW all material means to know are distorted by our imperfect senses and resultant faulty perceptions. The spiritual practitioner wishes to experience a truth not wholly dependent upon the material senses of perception.

“I am God” may be better translated as “I am Life.” To say, I am God, experiencing God” would be synonymous with saying, “I am the eternal essence of Life, experiencing Life.” The term “God” doesn’t envelop the associations like “all knowing,” “all controlling,” or “all enjoying” in the context of every world view/religion. So then, if you were change the term “God” to the term “Life,” now all the associations you have with “God” would be synonymous with everything you associate with the word “Life” (sight, sound, emotional sensations, physical sensations, color, film, music, plants, insects, water, fire, war, romance, etc., etc., etc.). In a western context however, to say, “I am God” certainly does have those egotistical and beyond human capacity associations you mentioned. The best way I’ve come make sense of the way Watts often uses the phrase “I am God” or “You are God, is most similar to that experience of being in a dream, when something in your dream tries to convince you that you’re in a dream. In that moment, your response is to either resist it and keep on going about your adventures pretending you’re not in a dream, or you accept the information and start lucid dreaming. So, from this perspective, when a person comes to the realization that they are God, it’s most similar to realizing they are the dreamer within the dream. Only they are god/life experiencing god/life. Like Watts mentioned, there’s many ways a person can come to this realization, but an approachable way to make sense of it, is to simply close your eyes, cover your ears, and then open them…

@@TaoSkateboarding In simple words are you saying that individual separate "I" ultimately does not exist and it's individual existence is a dream? (Btw, I don't talk about "I" as "I, the human, animal, body or other atheistic concept). You might have noticed that in your statement the individual seperate "I" still existed in both states, within and outside the dream... because this is our experience/evidence, but we are trying to explain something outside that experience, which we don't have. Those who say they have it might not be honest with themselves or others. God is life and I, the individual, am part of this life, is simple because we experience it even without seeing/realising God. But, God is life, I'm the life, therefore I'm God, is closer to speculation and might turn out to be delusional. Someone might try to say that term "god" is a confusing concept comming from humans lacking something or being egocentric. To this I would say again, being everything, including being a source of everything, is outside our experience. This experience of individualities might be eternal. If so, then there must be something greater, also eternal (beyond space time) and therefore the best name for it is God. Something like that... :) Long and repeating...

@@ksd593 In more simple terms, I’m arguing that we are all god, experiencing god, pretending not to be god. In other words, there is no difference between your every day experience which includes all the perceptual details (whether beautiful, trivial, or bleak) and that in which this perspective refers to as god. To further illustrate my dream metaphor, when we dream, we are the architects and perceivers of our own dreams, only we pretend (subconsciously) while in the dream, that we are neither the architect nor the dreamer. It’s only when something alerts us to the possibility that we may in fact be in a dream, that we actually stop whatever we’re doing in the dream to consider it. If we convince ourselves that it’s impossible that we could be in a dream, then we usually go about our adventure subconsciously pretending that we’re not in a dream, when we are in fact in a dream. If we perceive that moment of interruption in such a way that unequivocally convinces us that we are in fact in a dream, then we start lucid dreaming and are able to navigate the parameters of the dream differently, or least with an awareness of the dream world in which we are experiencing. To clarify, I’m not proposing that the awake state of reality is a dream (it certainly shares similar characteristics though), I’m just using that as a metaphor to describe the situation we find ourselves in, where we subconsciously seek god outside ourselves and our reality entirely, and where we go to great lengths to subconsciously pretend that we are not god. When in fact, we are god, experiencing god. From this perspective, it’s like when you look around you, feel around you, hear around you, what else should or could god be? To put it another way, Buddhists talk about this experience of “Enlightenment”, which is often interpreted as experience where a person comes to this profound philosophical revelation, and in that revelation, a person achieves some elevated degree wisdom and virtuous supremacy. However, some would argue that the experience of “Enlightenment” or “Satori” is really just a simple and seemingly out of nowhere realization that they are god, experiencing god. Like in the dream metaphor, it’s the sort of experience where once you realize you’re in a dream or realize that you are god experiencing god, it’s really just an obvious “oh, duh” sort of moment (still profound though). Even in my best efforts to describe it with words, it’s ultimately the sort of experience and perspective (I suppose) where you either experience it/see it or you don’t. It can only be conceptually reasoned with to a point. However, another way of illustrating this, is that we all share in this first person “I/Me state of being. The I/Me is ultimately a mirage though where we can almost see the outline of our own perceptions, but are never quite able to see it clearly or permanently. So in this way and from this perspective, god is experiencing itself individually AND omnisciently, simultaneously. Unlike western depictions of god where god sits outside of this realm, where it’s able to see all the events unfolding objectively, from this perspective, god has created a situation for itself, where it experiences itself one at a time, yet all at the same time, in every time. The Hindus refer to this as “The Great Drama of God,” where God is essentially playing an infinite, theatrical game of hide and go seek with itself. And in order to keep the game going forever, it creates an infinite world of illusions disguised as I, Me, and You. And in the case of animals, insects, and plants, they are in the same perceptual game of hide and go seek, only it seems as if they just intuitively understand that they are god and don’t spend anytime objectively thinking about it. They seem to just intuitively know their place in the whole and go about their adventures dealing with reality as it presents itself, one moment at a time. To your point about explaining something outside of our experience, I can’t speak to that, nor do I personally spend much time speculating about those things. Not because the possibilities aren’t there and that it’s not interesting, but because from this perspective, the very attempt is just another way in which god tries to disguise itself, and is ultimately an illusion that detracts from a more likely possibility…Which is that, reality as you and I are experiencing it in this perceiver vs. perceived dichotomy is quite possibly all there is…

Have you ever looked into the Author Isaac Asimov ? He wrote a two-volume set on the historical context of the Bible. Volume 1 is the old testament and volume 2 is the new testament. It is a fascinating read in that he cross-references historical texts from the time to give a more precise chronology of events. Basically the old testament is about a bunch of desert tribes fighting amongst each other. The new testament is about who won those skirmishes and what they did with the spoils of war. Probably the biggest take-away from Asimov is how poorly translated the King James version of the Bible is compared to all other preceding versions. Some translations completely lost the context of the symbology of certain names and places and some names and places were entirely fabricated and can only be found in the King James version.

You would think they would understand that consciousness (Spirit) is evolving and is inside all People of all faiths and even those without any faith or denomination. All beings without exception are Divine and are loved and have intrinsic worth and value. You would think they would revise their creed and their dogma and start presenting Jesus as he was and is...an enlightened Master that taught transcendence. The "Kingdom of Heaven" within is your own Divine Center. When you integrate your shadow and connect with your Center, bliss and the transcendent state arise. This is what he really taught. Explain the Dead Sea scrolls. Secondly the Catholic church has adopted heretical teachings that are counter to the bible in its entirety. Lastly you expect your audience to be ignorant of prophecy in the old testament to what jesus said and expect that the Catholic Church to have the imagination to write such a fantastical story which at the time the bible was only to be read by those who could read namely the Catholic church. Not to mention the Apostle Paul's journeys through Greece and Rome who's letters can be verified historically from various great minds of Ancient Greece and Rome. And Pauls Crucifixion in Rome well documented in Rome. What the Heck are you trying to do? Debunk the word of God? Many have tried and failed ,and you're not the first and certainly wont be the last. My only question now is what are you so afraid of? Why does Jesus frighten you so? If you dont want salvation for your sins that's your choice. Jesus does not force worship. You do or you dont. You can be that guy looking at the Ark and wave goodbye and take your chances. But the ridiculous claims you make are not supported biblically nor historically.

I consider him a profoundly wise and transformative thinker, but this is the first time I think Watts is wildly off-base. He's presenting a "what if?" scenario as if it were fact. He might wish that Christianity was more like Eastern religions, but the differences between the two are imbedded principals and don't equate to Judeo-Christianity coasting off the benefits found in Eastern principals that it "got wrong". There are all forms of cosmic conscious revelation in Western/Judeo-Christian doctrine, leading to mystics, prophets, saint's, apostles, etc. (which Watts equates himself to, minus the miraculous achievement part). There are levels to everything and a Messiah is cosmically beyond association with a deep thinker/philosopher like Watts in ways that are critical to J/C principal - by definition.. Even if all the miracles were complete fabrications, the influence of J/C principals and J.C. himself on civilization is so far beyond Watts that he has no authority to legitimately criticize the message. When Watts contends that "the whole answer to the story of miracles is simply imagine that you are G", he makes one of the more ludicrous simplifications of transient thought I've ever heard. Even a brilliant mind can have an off day I guess.
@JoshSmith222
Жыл бұрын
@@devarmont87 You've totally misinterpreted what I said presuming, I suppose that I'm an offended Christian, which I'm not. I never said he was wrong. I said off-base. I'm criticizing his perception and approach - that Christians :"got Jesus's message wrong" - as self centered, egocentric, etc. - BECAUSE it insists on a "right" application of spirituality and a "wrong" one. I don't claim that Christianity is "right" and Buddhism (or other Eastern religions that he prefers) "wrong". I will say that both as entities have been incredibly successful, more successful than Watts at transforming spiritual perception. I'd have no more place criticizing Buddhism etc. than Watts does Christianity, UNTIL one of us has outperformed them in some way or somehow exhibited a mastery or improvement on those institutions. Watts has never been associated with miraculous achievement, so he has zero authority to condemn the interpretation of Christians, who loosely quantify alignment to the "cosmic consciousness" through them. All miracles or miraculous accomplishments in the name of G, must be lies for Watt's authority/perception to have any relevance. Christians have to dismiss the foundation of their faith to believe Watts and that's far too limiting IMO, especially considering that Watts influence is non-miraculous - simply having very compelling things to say. That does not and will not compete with an eons old religious institution, nor should it. Anyone who says that "achieving miracles is simply imagining you are G" has made their worldview/ego front and center with no evidence to support it. (unless he's performed a few miracles we don't know about) I don't think anyone who's had miracles ascribed to them has ever made that simplified statement. To be honest, Watts comes off a little jealous and extremely egotistical in his approach here. "If I was in charge of Christianity I would've gotten it right - because I understand Jesus better than his followers do." kind of vibe. You don't have to think Christianity is "right" to find Watt's platform weak and arrogant. You don't have to believe in miracles to find his criticism of Christian authority off-base either. The success of Christianity as an institution and reported positive effect on its followers is far more powerful than anything Watts has accomplished without them.

The Catholic Church collected a large number of pre-existing writings, edited them where they saw fit, decided which they wanted to keep, and which they wanted to discard. They then turned that collection into an anthology: calling it the New Testament. I’m not arguing whether it was good or bad, I just think it’s important to be historically accurate.

Every human rule outside of Mathematics and the hard sciences was made up by people somewhat arbitrarily, usually for various self-serving reasons, not just religious rules. But we can judge sets of rules by how well they served the societies imposing them over time, if there is a track record available. Some sets of religious rules have led to flourishing, sustainable healthy societies that have lasted for many centuries. Other sets of rules, such as those of the French Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution, the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and Pol Pot's Revolution, which bear many similarities to today's Woke revolution, produced unstable and unsustainable societies that collapsed in a few years or a few decades.

Interesting is that some of those "cultural revolutions" allowed for a globalist progressive regime to take root starting in the 1890's which also happened to be around the same time the Rothschilds were purchasing land in the middle east that, two world wars later, would be known as "the state of Israel" under the guise of Zionism. From the limited amount of research I have done it would seem as though Hinduism through the Vedic texts is the purest form of science and mathematics packaged as symbology and myth. Interesting is that they purposely note that the information in the Vedic texts was not their own discovery but was rather gifted to them from an ancient advanced pre-flood civilization. Most, if not all, major religions parallel or outright plagiarize from the Hindu's. I think modern religions suffer from having all of the answers handed to them without knowing what the questions were.

Did Jesus Christ die on the cross? More importantly, did He resurrect from the dead? If He resurrected, then the bible is true, and He is the Son of God and equal to God. In 1995, I was 28 yrs old when I decided to read the Bible for myself. My wife at the time started going to church with my 3 young daughters, while I stayed home watching the church of the NFL (american football) on TV. I felt a little guilty for staying home so I decided to read the bible myself, I didn’t want to waste my time going to church if it wasn’t true. I started in Genesis, recalled some of the stories but got bored in Leviticus, so I skipped to the New Testament and read the four gospels. I had been working at the IRS as a seasonal tax examiner and had to review taxpayer documentation for authenticity. I was reading the book of John when it hit me, Jesus while dying on the cross, told John to take care of His mother. Suddenly this was no longer a book of fables but documentation of an eyewitness to the event. I remember an internal voice ask me “do you believe what John has written?” and I said, “Yes, it rings true.” I became a Christian shortly after and was baptized with my youngest daughter. The Apostles, the followers and eyewitnesses, were understandably afraid for their own lives after seeing their Messiah brutally beaten, scourged, and murdered on the cross. They all knew His dead body was put into the tomb of Joseph of Aramathaea. Only seeing the resurrected Jesus Christ could explain their transformation from cowards to boldly proclaiming the resurrected Jesus Christ. All the Apostles except John died excruciating deaths as martyrs proclaiming that truth. The Bible is true and confirmed by its prophecies. Alexander the Great conquered the area of the Mediterranean Sea and Greek became the dominant language and culture. In the 3rd century BC, 70 Jewish Scholars translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek to preserve their Jewish heritage. It is called the Septuagint and seals and proves biblical prophecies were written at least 3 centuries prior to the birth of Christ. It’s ultimately God’s responsibility to inspire, preserve, and make His word available to us. Therefore, it’s no coincidence the King James Bible stands alone as the most printed book in history. No book will ever surpass its printings, number of books sold, nor its 400 plus years of biblical utilization in Christendom. When you face God, you won’t be able to say, “Why didn’t you tell me?” Good doctrine requires study of the Scriptures in context or you could cause irreparable damage with eternal consequences. God gave the common man the key (2Timothy 2:15 KJV) to understanding the Scriptures so their knowledge would surpass that of the world’s so-called experts. The King James Bible is God’s inspired and preserved Word, the Scriptures. Here’s an e-book (no renumeration or affiliation by me) that’ll show how to study it as God commands us to in 2Timothy 2:15 KJV, rightly divided, which means in context. www.graceambassadors.com/downloads/StartRightlyDividing_PDF.pdf

What language was the old Testament written in? Archeologists say it took hundred of years to compile originally in Aramaic. The language in Genesis is much different from Malachi or Book of Revelation. In Genesis there is simple language. In Revelation there is unfamiliar, extravagant symbolism. This language progression develops over hundreds of years. Did the Romans receive an Aramaic and Hebrew text and translate to Italian? How could the original messaging be conveyed in Italian, English and every other language? How long would that take? This person talks declaratively. That means "believe me because I say so. No evidence. I have a steady unique voice so I'm telling facts with no evidence." It's 80% nonsense and possible plausibility for those with a narrow world view of all of this.

Jesus identifies as: -that divine in us (which Watts claims does not depend of Jesus' soul) -the son-of-man character who will get the dominion over the earth -Yahweh himself Why does Watts choose some words of Jesus while rejecting others where he clearly claims to be THE son of God? False additions made by Church? Need true backup for that, or else Watts should simply say he does not believe what Jesus taught. For example about being able to live in tension between mercy and shortcomings and still be happy.
