Palki festival is one of the biggest festival of Maharashtra, year over year, thousands of devotees walk across approximate 250 kilometers distance from Alandi to Pandharpur. You can say that its inherant part of culture of Maharasha and at least once in lifetime you should experience by participating in it.Once you participate in Palkhi you can perform singing, dancing, chanting of mantra Dnyanba-Tukaram. The group in which you are participated is called as Dindi and from start till end, you need to be part of the group, moving in disciplined way, staying together, taking food together, its well organised group of warkaris with common task of reaching to the holy town of Pandharpur.The Palkhi festival follows typical Hindu calendar months of Ashadh (June-July) and Karthik (November-December).It takes around 16 days for Warkaris to reach Pandharpur for Vitthal darshan.In the year 1685 Saint Tukaram’s youngest son, Narayan Baba brought some changes in the wari tradition by introducing the Palkhi, which was a sign of social respect.
In due coarse of time, the tradition became so popular that more than 150 thousand devotees walk along with the Sant Tukaram Palkhi from Dehu village, while a total of 225 thousand devotees march along with the Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi.
