If you can think of away to keep air ventilation for your hives and try mountain camp style to feed your bees and do that just before it to cold when put dry sugar in the hive because over the winter that sugar will soak up the moisture and keep your bees dry ... That will increase your bee survival rate

My 3rd attempt at overwintering and first time successful. Both hives have survived despite cold winter, but def need to make some changes in future years. Interested that you don't keep venting open all winter.

I live in willow. I do have venting. The medium on top is where all the moisture goes. I couldn’t setup/prepare my hives as well as I wanted last year because I of the wildfire that came through my area. That’ll be in the next video.

Glad you're still keeping bees Matt! How much honey are you getting each year? I wanna do a hive at my place this year in Palmer. Found this video randomly. Mashed that subscribe button! -Cliff

We got about 5 gallons. Soon it’ll be time to dig them out again and see who survived. We haven’t gotten near as much snow this year as we did last year so it should be easier. I plan on videoing around the homestead more and upload more videos this year.

Wow, Have you ever thought about overwintering them in a building? I'm on the complete opposite end of the cold weather spectrum. Our girls fly year round. Does being buried like that affect the oxygen levels in the hives?

private bubba there are people who seal up their hives with tape and then move them into a shed for the winter. Our shed burned down last summer in a wildfire that came through. It’s something I’ve considered. As for the oxygen levels, I’ve never noticed it affecting them. The heat from the hives tend to bore a hole through the snow. I think the reason I lost all but one hive is because they were weak I and didn’t feed them enough. We were displaced by the wildfire and when we got back to our property it was already “winter” and we had other things to focus on.

@@60acresofwhatever Sorry about your shed. Wild fires know no mercy. I look forward to seeing how you keep bees.

I would imagine that's what you need to make your bees off of
