May is Alaska's best-kept secret, with discounts on hotels and tours, sunny skies, little rain, and few crowds.
Early May in Alaska can still have a chill. But suddenly, trees will bud out, daytime temperatures can reach the 50s and 60s, and by the middle of the month we have 17 hours of daylight. It's also not as buggy! The migratory birds have returned, moose have dropped their calves, and the whales return. The beginning of the month is very different from the end, when high summer is just around the corner and you can feel the excitement in the air.
