I have an important question, when you melted the gold dust and got 29g on the scale, you also checked the purity with the tester, how many karat was it? Because I can see you checked the karat to know what quantity of base metals to add.

I sell my gold to a big refiner if I need some paper to pay bills or debts. They check the gold that I send with an XRF (xray fluoroscope) to determine purity for my payout. It comes back three nines fine every time.

Just rewatched this as I was working on some placer gold. It seems to me that placer gold is pure enough to skip the inquartation step without having the issues of lower karat gold. I’ll let you know how the experiment works. I’m sure I’ll have silver chloride but that’s east to deal with.
@sreetips

Probably be just fine. I inquart everything, if I can. Because it does such a fantastic job of cleaning the gold.
@ExtractingMetals

@@sreetips well the experiment is complete on a 6 gram sample. Apparently the primary impurity in placer gold is silver so at 25% silver it is enough to cause the issue of forming the crust and stalling the reaction. Therefore, inquartation is best for placer gold. It was a fun experiment tho. I now know that 75% of the placer gold will be gold and the other 25% will be silver. It makes it easier to calculate the values.

Figuring placer to be 18k is probably a good rule of thumb. Then if you encounter a higher concentration of gold it will be a welcome surprise.

3:14 why you didnlt neutralize the nitric acid before adding SMB ??
@sreetips

Because I add just the right amount of nitric to just dissolve the gold using incremental nitric dosing. If done correctly, then there won’t be any need to neutralize excess nitric before adding SMB, because there won’t be any excess nitric to neutralize.

Copper takes longer than silver to dissolve in nitric. And for refiners, patience is a virtue. As a new refiner, I remember desperately wanting the gold so bad that I tried to force reactions, try short cuts, and continue processing before it was ready. Had to go through it to realize that it’s not the right way to go.

I’ve never done it, but I’ve been told by a reliable source (Harold_V on the goldrefiningforum.com) that it can be rendered to pure silver by heating in a crucible with plenty of sodium carbonate. But it makes lot of nasty fumes, and will have a tendency to boil over out of the crucible.
