I’m 64, and at the age of 16 I was at Gateway dragstip just out side St Louis. During a pro stock race Bill Bagshaw’s Redlight Bandit lost control due to a blown engine and flipped up into the stands at 126 mph. The car went right over my head. Killed two young people in the stands. Very lucky to not have killed more. First time we ever sat down track. Terrible day. I’ll never forget it

@@itsjosh9076 we went quite a bit and always sat or stood near the start. That was the first time we sat down track. We didn’t go back the entire next season. It was pretty traumatic. The two killed was a 16 yr old girl and a 19 year old guy. Saw quite a few injured and bleeding

That weak spot in the frame rail was waiting for the right moment to break. A Muldowney episode. Thanks for video and glad Greg has already rebounded. He dodged a Big Bullet. I had a very similar dragster, sold it, and the axle broke in the staging lane. Like airplanes, stuff only lasts so many hours / cycles, and calendar / seasons.

That was brutal!!! I was probably about the same age as you (Number of years ago) - I was the only one to get this lady’s top alcohol dragster, crash, chassis broke and the car went into the right hand wall, and then immediately into the actual guard rail - she had already passed the concrete wall lining the quarter mile.. she was fine, but at the same time I believe, had broken some ribs and sprained a bunch of stuff, but was just hanging out in the trailer for more disappointed about the car.. :) She actually passed away from another accident a number of years later and I’m really really really glad that I was not there for that.. made it extra sad because I had known her for so long but don’t want to get into all that, hence why I’m not saying her name. I will say, though, when you see a supercomp or top dragster (the index class, not top alcohol or top fuel) crash…man.. they have such a short wheelbase and are so narrow that it really tends to tear people up pretty good… and obviously it’s never good when you go over the wall!! What was his/her injury, prognosis, etc..?

actually, now that you say that, it's strange that they only have the fire truck on stand by. The didn't have and still don't have an ambulance on stand by in case of an accident.

Dude, he rolled at 160 miles an hour. everything but the engine and maybe a few other parts where actually salvageable. Also the reason the dragster rolled was because the rear end locked up and broke the frame behind the drivers compartment.
