@nikesback Idk about the mosquitoes bud. I was stationed in Alaska and they are miserable, a quick search referenced that Alaska as a whole is home to some 17 trillion mosquitoes because of the weather conditions. It’s always so interesting to hear other people’s views of my home. Growing up here, we just don’t think about how “extreme” it is because it’s the life we know. I sunbathed in 60 degree weather. We have almost 6 month long winters. I’ve jumped in snow piles at 10 below. I’ve commercial driftnetted out on the Cool Inlet in 3 foot seas (which means 3 feet up AND down for a 6 foot difference). I’ve gone moose hunting but haven’t had a successful hunt yet. We see moose, bears, and caribou all the time. If I could post pictures here, I’d post a picture of a caribou that passed my house a few weeks back. My home may be “extreme,” but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. This wilderness, this adventure, and this freedom is wonderful.

Born and raised. I say if you've been through a few winters. You can consider yourself more Alaskan the longer you are here. You may not be from here but the longer you are here, the more likely, an alaskan will call you a fellow alaskan. I do enjoy hearing people who lived here for any amount of time to see how they felt about Alaska. To be honest, I don't know how I do it.. Born in Homer but raised in Fairbanks. Used to say I was born in the wrong place until I was 19...Then I just would grit my teeth and get through it. Most of us dread the cold starting in August and September but there is more fun with Snowmachines and other adventures in the winter. We have a saying, "You can always dress warmer." Each year, summer and winters can be different than the last. Some more survivable than others. It's definitely warmer winters than when I was a child. We had -60° and-50° winters for 2 and 3 weeks straight. We would go to school at -20° but we couldn't go to recess. We would just get heavy snow days. So when the snow would just dump on us, we would stay home and play outside if you wanted to make snowmen and snow forts.

Yep. I'm a hardcore Alaskan myself, and I couldn't agree more. Tell you what, if you let them bite you a lot, they will eventually leave you alone

I spent every summer in the Alaskan bush growing up. Alaskans DO call the mosquito their national bird, and everything IS serious. To get from Talkeetna to the bush, we took ATV s equipped with pepper spray, a shotgun (just in case, the aim is to never kill an animal unless you have to) and a hatchet (for any stupid people trying to harm you and yours) for hours along the train tracks. We knew where to turn when we saw our camo covered sign (which really was just a symbol) and followed our trail (covered behind us for the first hundred yards with a small square of chain link) for another hour. Once, we found that a bear got into some paint on one of our sites, looking for food. Paw print covered bucket was my souvenir to take back to CA that year...

Yea, I'd say my only memory of Alaska years back was the mosquitoes, and I visited Fairbanks that time

Yellowstone is like this at this military only campsite/cabins area we stayed at. Mosquitoes fucking EVERYWHERE and they were smart enough to know that cars, especially running cars or warm ones meant human food for them. It was absolutely miserable going out in the area b/c you'd be instantly swarmed and it was just like those pictures too except they'd be little annoying ones.

FYI, when the skeets get real bad, wear the baggiest clothes you have, tuck your pants into your socks, and just keep gently clapping/rubbing your face. it's all you can do to avoid the bites.

As an Alaskan. I hate Anchorage and the mosquitoes.
