This hymn to Justice was a reference to the Dreyfus affair. It is a very energetic score. The orchestra is used at its full power. The music is highly persuasive when the subject is known. Magnard wrote here a piece that should deserve to be known more than it is. - even in France.

It's pretty Wagnerian, but really beautiful!

If there is Wagner's influence, it came via Cezar Franck: most of music idiom is similar to Franck's. No composer from the end of 19th century on escaped Wagner's influence, but Magnard's music is very "French."
