I take great comfort in listening to great minds speak in this format, I'm so thankful these have been preserved, I'm going through a phase in my life where I'm aggressively re-evaluating every single thing I think I understand about the world, so far it's caused me to lose sleep, I haven't been sleeping peacefully for over a year, but tonight that will be different, change is inevitable and it's best to seek comfort in what one truly values, the dark phase I was in has passed, I'm in a clearer space, I can continue forward and embrace the fear and novelty I seek in this world...

This recording proves, in his own words, how naive he was of politics. His call for one world government was particularly frightening. Einstein was a pacifist...that is until he learned about what Hitler was doing. Then, thankfully, he grew up and flipped his position.

And then immediately flipped back, advocated for disarmament and supported the creation of the United Nations. Hardly naive in my opinion.
@Thinks-First

@@Cupit29 No, Einstein was never a pacifist again. He never flipped back. Most supporters of the UN and nuclear disarmament were not pacifists-Einstein included. @@Thinks-First He became a constant and vocal activist for peace-spending much of the rest of his life speaking and writing on the subject. @@Cupit29 You are not completely reading my comments and you are confusing "advocating for peace" with "pacifism". Einstein was NOT a pacifist during or after WWII. He rejected it. He most definitely supported standing armies and weapons prior to conflict, and then supported violent defense if necessary.Pacifists don't do that. His support for the creation of an atomic weapon is all the proof anyone needs to understand that Einstein rejected pacifism completely during WWII. Advocating for peace is NOT pacifism. I'd say he was more agnostic. Consider this quote: "I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals himself in the harmony of all that exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fate and the doings of mankind" He also said, “Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible concatenations, there remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in point of fact, religious.” There are lots of quotes like that.
@JET7C0
4 жыл бұрын
@A P , It does kind of sound that way in these quotes, though I think pantheism might fit what Einstein is saying here even better (and Spinoza for that matter). Having said that, I think Einstein was careful to not let himself be pigeonholed in terms of his thoughts in this area, and mostly tried to stick with science. I can certainly understand how a guy who had a fundamental understanding of the connection between space and time, the strangeness of relativity, the paradoxes of the quantum world, and so on, could end up in awe of the universe to the point it inspired a kind of religious feeling in him at the kind of mystery/immensity of it all.

The world is like a most complex clock where everything is working together so accurately and on time. It just feels that there must be a god that came up with this everything.
