Albert Marquet is a French fauvist painter known for his landscapes. Marquet is a close friend of Henri Matisse and exhibits with other Fauves such as André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy. Although his colors are not as bright as those of his counterparts, Marquet's subtle tones are brought out by his vigorous brushstrokes. Born Pierre-Albert Marquet on March 27, 1875 in Bordeaux, he studied with Gustave Moureau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as did his Fauve colleague Georges Rouault. He traveled extensively throughout his career and had an interest in waterfronts and vistas around Europe and North Africa.
