The "peter losing wendy" line also signifies growth. Peter Pan famously never grows up- similar to James. Wendy goes on to live the rest of her life and grows old and marries and has children of her own. I think that's why Taylor made the love triangle songs occur at different ages. Cardigan: Betty is much older here and reflects back on this time in her life. August: Slightly older and reflecting back because she's managed to move on a bit. Betty: James is frozen at the age that they cheated- always childlike (17), never grows up in this story. How beautiful

maybe your explanation would also fit a Scott-Pan and Wendy-Taylor. Taylor goes on to live the rest of her life and grows figuratively (connecting Bonny's and Em's interpretation of "But now I'm bleedin'" 26:21 with "And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow" (from The 1) and your explanation), has children of her own (re-recording her masters as well as owning her new albums) while James was acting emotionally immature and sold the albums to Scooter 🤷

I kinda take “the 1” as not being about a specific ex bf but collectively all of them. Like she’s looking back at her “roaring twenties” and saying it could have been great if she’d ended up with any of those boys but she didn’t and it’s all good.

I think it's more about Tom. She says "but we were something, don't you think so?", even if their relationship was short she wants to make sure he counted it. Also when she says "And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow" she knows she's the one who hurt the other one in the relationship and then "in my defence I have none" she knew it wasn't gonna work from the beginning but still went for it.
@LuLu98J

I agree AND I think that "the 1" (literally the #1 track of folklore) is an introductory song to the whole record AND the re-recordings, she is basically telling us that this album is going to explore the loss of her albums (wouldn't it be fun, Scott, if you would've been my musical partner forever? But you weren't though) and she's telling her past lovers that she HAS to re-recorded her albums and the songs about them (In my defense, I have none | For digging up the grave another time), but that they could re-experience their relationships with her as she re-records them (wouldn't it be fun if you had been the one? What if one thing had been different, would everything be different today? Come on, my exes, let's let our imagination flow). It's an introductory song but IT HAS SO MANY LAYERS!

@@LuLu98J oh my gosh I LOVE this explanation so much! It’s my personal interpretation for this song now. It just makes so much sense for it to be about all her exes in general. In exile when he says "so step right out, there is no amount of crying I can do for you" I take that as Scott saying go ahead and leave. I'm not going to give you what you want and what you're asking for. He's not crying about it at all, he's just saying no to giving her a chance to buy back her masters. He thinks that she'll just leave it alone and move on but then she actually does leave and then of course it my tears ricochet she's saying "it killed you just the same, wishing I stayed, drunk on this pain, curing my name ect... so he wasn't crying in exile but he was crying in my tears ricochet

There are so many Gatsby references made in “TLGAD”, the ones you mentioned as well as the “new money.”Gatsby being new money. How Gatsby would go out to the rocks at night and look across the water to Daisys house who always had a green light shining across the water. She also mentions in “Don’t Blame Me” “I once was poison ivy, but now I’m your Daisy.” Gatsby loved Daisy to his death, and Joe loves her like Gatsby loved Daisy. I have a theory that “The Great Gatsby” is one of Joe’s favorite books or one that they both love because she says in “Paper Rings” “Now I’ve read all the books beside your bed.” Such a great breakdown!! Hi I just want to clarify something 1. Taylor owns the copyright to her music and Big Machine owned Taylor’s masters to her 6 albums. BM owns the right to the masters because of the contrat Taylor signed when she was 15. Take note that it was Scott who asked Taylor to sign with him when at the time he didn’t even have a company yet. Taylor was his first artist and it was Taylor who made BM such a profitable company. 2. Owning the masters means they have control over publication (basically use in movies, putting it on youtube, control over use of the songs when played on tv, etc). They make money everytime someone uses a copy of the masters. 3. Taylor wants her masters because she wrote the music, it is her voice, the images are of her, the concept and words on the cd jackets are hers, basically every detail in the cds are birth from her ideas. 4. Copyright is given to an artist from the birth of the art. It has many rights such as right to royalties. Taylor still owns the copyright to her music hence she still gets paid royalties to the use of her music. This is also why Taylor can rerecord her music. By rerecording, Taylor will create new masters of her old albums.

Also, Taylor still has a decent amount of control of her masters being used in movies etc. To use a song they need the publishing rights (Taylor) and the master rights (scooter). So she's currently blocking scooter from using any of her catalogue in movies, tv etc. So really all scooter is making money off is people buying her old music, streaming it, buying tour dvds and watching her music videos etc. Taylor said she wants her music to live on in films and tv but she doesn't want scooter to make a cent off of her so she'll re-record and use those versions instead in films etc. She's insanely smart and is making all the right moves, leveraging her fan base that she has earned and forcing them to play this out in public so they can't bully her and i'm very excited to see crazy chess game they're playing continue.

My theory is that “the 1” is from the perspective of Selena Gomez, singing about Justin Bieber (I had a Tik Tok go viral about it haha). Lots of signs point to it! Justin featured on a song called “I’m the one”. Selena also has a lyric in her song “fun” : “you may not be the one, but you look like fun”. Very similar to “it would have been fun, if you would have been the one”. They are close friends and Aaron didn’t just say it wasn’t from her perspective, he said the specifically it was the perspective of a friend which even more so makes me think it’s about Selena and Justin! Could be wrong but a fun theory none the less haha 🤣 my fav part of this era is all the different theories!!

"you drew stars around my scars" can also be about her record label making money off her heartbreaks. it's like an attempt to make things feel better because they all got something out of it and for a moment, it was pretty but then, as the song goes "now, I'm bleeding". because the scars were always a vulnerable place to touch and she let them, but they betrayed her.

I love your breakdowns!! I had a slightly different take on Cardigan, although I do believe that there is hidden meaning behind some of the lyrics. High heels on, cobblestones black lipstick, sensual politics.... I think this refers to Joe and the Met Gala. Her Tribeca compound in NYC is on one of NYC’s remaining cobblestone streets, there are not many that remain. If they met at the MET gala, in NYC, she was wearing really dark lipstick, high heels, living at her Tribeca pad on a cobblestone St. The MET gala is the red carpet of all red carpets, it usually has a political undertone where using fashion to make a political statement is normal and usually welcomed and expected. During REP, her stock was down and she is inherently insecure anyway. I think she’s talking about Joe putting her on (“you try on calling me baby like trying on clothes” from KOMH) after she felt like she had been discarded and forgotten by her fans and the music industry. He decided she was his favorite. It almost seems like he had other girlfriends or wasn’t wanting any commitment just yet (“it’s cool I tell him no rules”, “maybe u ran with the wolves and refused to settle down”, “ back when we were card sharks playing games”, “ echoes of your footsteps on the stairs, stay here honey I don’t want to share”, etc). Until he chose her from the other women maybe, he told her she was his favorite (I’m a mess but the mess that you wanted). To kiss in cars to downtown bars, maybe even a dive bar, could be them making out in the backseat of cars (in the backseat drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar) coming home from the bar, or while she waits in the backseat while he secures the rental on Cornelia St. choose two girls lose the one also implies that he wasn’t ready to settle down And this upsets her (I cried in the back of the car coming home from the bar, I love you ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard; I packed my things, left Cornelia St before you even knew I was gone; maybe I’ve stormed out of every room in this town; begging you to leave me just so I can scare you; I woke up just in time now I wake up by your side). Playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends. In order to meet up with Joe, she had to be in disguises, hiding from media and fans. Maybe this would happen on weekends, or I know she was jet setting to London maybe on the weekends. I think the final bridge is also about Joe. Tried to change the ending Peter losing Wendy, he keeps trying to keep her and she keeps running away (you gotta leave before you get left; again the I woke up just in time lyric and at least I did one thing right). She knew he’s the stable one in this relationship, no matter how many times she tries to run away because she’s scared and insecure, she knew he would always be there for her (In Afterglow, it’s only in my head; Then you called showed your hand, I turned around before I hit the tunnel ....). She knows she is a mess but he is the rock. She will go through phases where she feels discarded By fans or friends, but she will always be his favorite, she can always count on him. Leaving like a father, running like water, I knew you’d linger....... I think she is talking about herself running away from this relationship, trying to save herself from being hurt because she loved him so much.... But he lingered, she couldn’t leave him completely. Haunt all of my what-ifs. He was the rock, and he was haunting her scenarios until they get back together because she was miserable without him. He’d always be there for her no matter how many times she storms off, storms out of all these rooms in NYC, but it’s all in her head, he’s still there for her. His favorite.

Ok, so as far as the “Peter losing Wendy” thing goes, I don’t think that Wendy was actually superior. They just weren’t right for each other. It was inevitable that they couldn’t last. She couldn’t exist in his world forever and he couldn’t exist in hers. The tragedy in it was that they loved each other and it couldn’t work; and how painful is that? When that happens it feels like a slap in the face. You find yourself asking “what was even the point of loving each other?”. I wonder if there’s a component of finding out what parts of yourself you can’t compromise to be with someone else, and that’s how you find out who you truly are.

Really random but I have a Harry Styles theory for exile because there are so many lyric links!! On firstly “holdin all this love out here in the hall” = “meet me in the hallway” , “get your knuckles bloody for me” = “I got splinters in my knuckles crawling across the floor” , “we always walked a very thin line” = fine line (his new album), then at the end she say “so many signs, so many time” = sign of the times. I just thought this was crazy similarities and I don’t think the song is necessarily about him but maybe it’s another layer????

The way i understood the lyric ' You drew stars around my scars but now im bleeding' is that the person that she is talking about drew stars around her scars (helped her with her trauma) but now im bleeding (now they're gone and its all unravelling and she's bleeding because they aren't there anymore or that now they are the one who caused her the pain. ) I know that if u think about it in the context of the whole song it doesn't really make sense but that's the first impression i got and i thought it was brilliant. Also, Taylor's lyrics have so many layers that everyone can interpret it in their own way...I love that so much about her music.

SO excited for another video from you I love you guys and this channel! On the album stuff, I think the nail in the coffin on how truly awful Scooter is was is when he reposted something a friend of his had posted joking about how he now "owns Taylor Swift"... I was beyond words, to say someone owns a women or their work, and to find it comedic despite their pain, and to post about it. Awful.

“Peter loosing Wendy” aka Taylor loosing her masters. “I knew you’d try to change the end” she knew us fans would do whatever we could to try to change it so Peter wouldn’t lose the most important person in her life, aka Taylor losing her life’s work.

Hi!! Very late to the party but just wanted to mention with LGAD, I feel like she bought the Rhode Island house because she knew the story of Rebecca harkness and related to it, as opposed to learning about it after… especially because of the reference to dolly, Taylor obviously admires dolly so much and has followed her life for so long! Love you guys btw, so happy I found this channel!!

What I love the most about this channel is that you guys actually listen to each other before talking. That’s hard to happen with 2 people channels. Every one is so eager to talk that they interrupt their partner without even listening. Each one of you gives the other the space to talk and you actually listen to the other’s words. That’s lovely 🤎

It’s so interesting to think about how much Taylor would have related to Rebecca in TLGAD if she had actually ended up with Jake. She wouldn’t have fit in, which we see in the entire song I bet you think about me. The same comparisons are made of not being sophisticated enough, and I think even if that relationship would have worked she would have still stuck out and not really blended into his world and she would basically have been Rebecca.

exile is such a beautiful word to have used, because when someone’s exiled it’s from their native country, it’s essentially from home so if she’s referring to scott it links perfectly

“The smell of smoke would hang around this long, ‘cause I knew everything when I was young”. What if it’s like “I burned this and thought I’d forget it and it would be over. But even though it’s gone, the smoke from what I burned is STILL here.” And how she says after, “ ‘cause I knew everything when I was young”. What if that part was almost sarcastic and self deprecating. Like, “I knew everything when I was young. I knew I could burn this and it would be over and I could move on, but crap, I was wrong. The smoke is still lingering and I’m still trapped by the memories. It was so much easier when I was young and I knew ‘everything’ ”. But then if you think about how she said “running like water”, it’s not stagnant water that has endless ripples (which would be similar to the smell of smoke lingering for this long), it just passes through and moves on. I think there’s juxtaposition going on there. Sometimes something happens and you just move on and it’s like it was no big deal, and other times you’re sure you’re going to be over something once you just do _________ , but it’s still there anyway.

literally three years late but peter losing wendy is such a powerful lyric because james refused to grow up (i'm only seventeen i don't know anything) while betty was so mature (when you are young they assume you know nothing). also betty lists off so many things she knew about james (every chorus is different) but augustine only knew him for a summer so she doesn't know about those small details that betty's picked up on.

Love how much she references film, movie theaters, “understudy” and two (that I’ve noticed) films in the album in particular. Cardigan “Peter losing Wendy” obviously Peter Pan / Hook Seven “your dad is always mad... and we can be pirates” Peter Pan / Hook “Pack your dolls and a sweater, we’ll move to India forever” The little princess (1995 version)

Also I need to mention how in Exile, Bon says "You were my town" and she says " You were my crown" because it shows the dinamic of the relationship. For me it's a little bit like the "You kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath". Like she just cared so much more than this person and even maybe putting him in a pedestal and falling so much harder when he hurt her 😭 And from his perspective everything he did was for her but in some ways without her cause she wasn't in the same "level" as she was, like he was the king and she didn't deserve a seat at the table.

i think Peter losing Wendy is about Scott losing Taylor and Leaving like a father, Running like water is like a metaphor of her leaving Scott because he was like a father to her.

I always wondered if the "leaving like a father" lyric is a nod to the fact that Taylor's dad was also a shareholder in BM records etc. and what his role may have been in all of the disputs and things....There are too many layers to this album and all the songs, like I just cannot even believe it exists its too perfect ahha

I think ‘leaving like a father, running like water’ is referring to James running away from a good thing and even though she knew him and could see that it might happen that way before it did, she still knew she wouldn’t be able to forget him even so.
