On mushrooms, Pet Sounds changed my life. Its as if Brian was showing us snippets of heaven. Also cut Mike some slack, he did a stellar job on the album. If you read their whole story he wasn't supportive of Brian's direction but he did somewhat gave the band longevity for all the tours they've done over the years. If it weren't for that fact the band wouldn't be as popular today with the young folks. Btw Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue?
@maggie.b.l

@@Andermander429 I love Pacific Ocean Blue. I have it on CD as well as a t-shirt! I have a thorough knowledge of The Beach Boys’ story and, respectfully, I wholeheartedly disagree. Obviously, one’s opinion of Mike’s work on this album is completely subjective. But in my opinion, as I made clear in my video, in sum, his “contributions” were dull and sometimes detrimental to Brian’s work. Regarding longevity, I would agree that Mike, but notably Carl Wilson, kept the band relevant through the 70’s. However, I think Mike’s efforts since then more often reflect negatively on the band than positively. As you know, it’s been decades since any Wilson has been a part of The Beach Boys touring band and I don’t believe that “the young folks” like me, who care about The Beach Boys found them through the touring band or surf music, but rather through exposure to Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson’s other, more personal work by word of mouth. The revival is more due to the release of the Pet Sounds Box Set, then Brian Wilson’s Smile, as well as the Smile Sessions, and finally the biopic Love and Mercy (which I highly recommend), than The Beach Boys touring band that Mike Love fronts. Anyways, that’s not important, that’s just ego stuff. It’s always a pleasure to hear from another Pet Sounds appreciator!

Great review!! And so cool that you started off with their earlier songs like Fun, Fun, Fun and Surfing USA, as a comparison, because Pet Sounds was a huge departure from their long-established image. Not sure I understand the Mike Love hate, but he's my least-favorite Beach Boy, too, so LOL!!!! (By the way, if you haven't seen The Wrecking Crew, a documentary about the West Coast studio musicians who played on almost everything in those days, you should because there are some great behind the scenes clips of the making of Pet Sounds.)

My favorite band. I got interested in them when I was 12. I graduated from listening to their surf/car music and played the Pet Sounds album for the first time around age 13. Since then I have collected all of their studio albums, outtakes, studio chatter, documentaries, and related movies. Pet Sounds was an album well ahead of its time. Btw I saw that Oklahoma State shirt. I actually went to school there. Fortunately Dr. Landy went to OU 😅

Love that young people are still finding Brian and his music. I enjoy most of the Beach Boys music but my favorite is from mid 64 to 73. Pet Sounds and Smile but also Today, 20/20, Sunflower, Surfs Up, Holland and In Concert. Brian's solo era is also great. I have love, hate about Mike Love also. On Pet Sounds he was not totally supportive but he gave good performances. He was more combative about smile but I've come to realize that even with a supportive Mike, I don't think Brian would have finished Smile in 66 or 67. Between the drug use, mental issues and Capital's frosty reaction to the "new" Beach Boy's direction I just don't see Smile getting done then. Marcella !

An iconic album that's widely recognized as a masterpiece. I love the harmonies on 'Sloop John B' and the desire to go home which is the focus of the song. My favorite album is "Blood on the Tracks" by Bob Dylan. He's not known as a great singer but I think he sings his songs better than anyone else. Other top 10 albums are "For the Roses" by Joni Mitchell and "Watermark" by Art Garfunkel.

The Little Girl I Once Knew was done before commencing Pet Sounds and maybe should have been on the album. in 1978 I saw the real Beach Boys with their big back up band in Concert in Grand Haven MI. Out doors in a stadium. Brian Wilson was there. Physically...not sure mentally, lol. The opening act was Roger McGuin, Clark, and Hillman of the Byrds with a drummer doing all the Byrd hits . I thought what a treat. But then in the middle of the Beach Boys show...out steps Jan And Dean to do three songs with them. Look up Jan and Dean if you have no clue. You don;t like Mike Love? While to the greater public The Beach Boys might be known for their early stuff (mainly 63-66) even that early period there are some lovely ballads like The Lonely Sea, Your Summer Dream, In My Room, Surfer Girl, The Warmth of the Sun, almost the whole B side of the Today! album and Let Him Run Wild. I'd be interested what you think of Smile (as per the 2011 Smile Sessions) for it just pips Pet Sounds even in its incomplete form. You seem to be a very emotional "creature," [ No, not from the Black Lagoon 😂] but that's really cool. You gotta be able to express yourself and that's what music is all about. I am a retired school music teacher. When one listens to Pet Sounds you step into this dream world that you don't want to leave. Compared to real life, Pet sounds is so good it makes real life suck even bigger than it does. The musicians on this were NOT the Beach Boys but the Los Angeles area Wrecking Crew studio musicians, like Carole Kaye on Bass [only female of the group] , Hal Blaine on Drums, etc. Sloop John B was the hit single from this album, was an old folk song Al knew and doctored up into the Beach Boys style. Yes I like I Know There's an Answer is better then Hang on to Your Pants, uh, Ego....that's bass harmonica, not a sax. Young people are starving for melody and harmony and don't even know it, how sad. You get it!!!!

Can one not say no to drugs
@maggie.b.l
14 күн бұрын
Yes, one can. But the issue here is that it was not just about drugs. The song Hang On To Your Ego had some drug references, for example, “they trip through the day and waste all their thoughts at night.” But those lyrics, and others, were not taken out when I Know There’s An Answer was made, meaning that the complaint Mike Love made about it being a “drug song” was most likely a red herring to distract from his actual intent, which was to control Brian Wilson and his vision for Pet Sounds. Mike Love is also not generally anti-drug, is known to drink on a regular basis, and smoked weed “many times” according to himself. Yet, he often criticizes Brian Wilson and Dennis Wilson’s drug use because he’s a hypocritical bigot.
