Queensrÿche started prog metal with their debut EP/demo. Unless Sepeltura was doing groove in the late 80s, Pantera's 5th album, Cowboys from Hell started groove metal. And funk metal was started by Faith No More and their debut (get mad RHCP fans, they never had enough metal in them to be seen as funk metal)

I am 41 and I remember when I was 3 my much older brother would play vinyls of Ozzy/Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, the classics. I think a good bonus entry since a lot of rap elitists insist ICP isn't rap and metal elitists in response insist they are not metal... Their predecessor Esham 1989 Bloomin' Words From Hell. You look at the Detroit 90's and 00's scene Eminem, Kid Rock, Twiztid, D12, ICP the acid rap/horrorcore sound out of Detroit often intersected with NuMetal. Kid Rock's rebranding and Psychopathic Records artists using metal instrumentals it goes back to Esham doing rap his way. There are earlier examples of "horrorcore" but it was basically kid friendly bubblegum stuff that boomer parents of small children played at chaperoned parties.

All I remember about that Korn record was my high school buddy telling me "You have to hear this". Me listening to the first song, then popping the cassette out of my player, handing it back to him, and saying "You actually made me take out my Obituary tape for THAT?!".😂

Man, I fucking love Metal! Don't think I could live without it. (Not literally of course) I'd say words almost fail to describe how awesome it is. It's so diverse, with all kinds of styles and sounds, for almost anyone. Though Venom kinda kicked off the Black Metal genre, I'd have to agree Bathory is the one to really start/invent the genre as we've come to know it today. With Mayhem, Burzum and Darkthrone being the 3 big bands to really fine-tune and refine/define the genre as we know it today. So in a way they could also be considered the starters of the genre.

Not so much creating a genre as redefining one or the creation of several microgenres, but Effigy of the Forgotten is a pretty significant linchpin in a lot of modern death metal microgenres. I truly believe brutal death metal, slam and deathcore would not exist as they do without that album

I would have included Suffocation for first (real) brutal death metal album in 1991, and Atheists for first technical death metal (1989). Also, if Venom were influenced by thrash in 1981, Show No Mercy being out 2 years later looks like Venom were time travellers 😅 other than that, your video is spot on, much love 🖤

Here's a question I've been pondering lately, who invented/originated prog metal? Prog rock has been around since the 1960s. There was a fair amount of prog rock in the 70s that was considered heavy, even 'heavy metal' at the time (eg Rush's 2112), but the sands of time have proved these not to be metal. I have to give it to Queensryche. They formed in '82, released their debut EP the year after, and there really was nothing else like it before.

Sure Black Sabbath invented doom but I think the release that really showed what doom could be (especially the more epic doom sort of thing) was probably epicus doomicus metalicus by Candlemass. It was extremely heavy, had insane vocals, and just an atmosphere and general vibe to it that I never really saw with any earlier doom. Along with pushing the lyrical themes to the extreme, almost depressing, that wasn't really seen often until that point

I'd love to see more videos like this! Ideas for another video could be for which album pioneered Deathcore; Hair Metal; Electronicore; and maybe non-metal genres too like Screamo or Shoegaze... Also personally I would credit Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" for being the first actual Thrash album, being as it came out like four months before Slayer even started recording their debut.

@@zanzax6438 dude... how can i say this without sounding too harsh... Well, look homie, Angel Dust is an LP from a band named "Faith No More" considered by many to be the favorite band of your favorite bands (Deftones, Korn and many others have called them a major influence for their sound) That particular album which came after the their biggest hit that was "The Real Thing" was considered to be the greatest commercial suicide in music history, because the band instead of replaying the previous albums formula, decided to experiment with their sound and let themselves be carried a bit by the major creative force that was their frontman "Mike Patton". That was the album i referred to, i dont even know that there was a band called Angel Dust, i only knew a japanese weird thriller movie with that named and of course PCP. You can investigate a bit more about it if you dont believe me. Faith No More and Rage Against The Machine were a big influence on nu metal, but more FNM than hypocrytes comunnists Rage and their political and preachy bs.
