Alcatraz Island sits in the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay, just over a mile from the mainland. Known as "The Rock," it was once home to the most dangerous criminals in the United States. Alcatraz operated as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963, housing notorious inmates like Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz."
The escape in 1962 was the most famous was, when Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers vanished into the night, leaving behind dummy heads in their beds. Did they survive the treacherous swim to freedom? No one knows. Their bodies were never found.
Alcatraz closed its doors in 1963, but its legend lives on. Today, it's a popular tourist destination, with visitors exploring its cold, empty cells and hearing tales of the ghosts that are said to haunt the island.
