The "weird" colours that appear are due to the fact that they are not made solely of one colour, especially black, it is essentially impossible to create black without mixing colours. Lovely effects though, would look amazing if you were to a huge scaled up version :)

the pigmented blacks are made from several different colors of pigment. you separate those colors when using the heat gun because the pigment molecules for each color are different sizes so they spread towards similar molecules instead of staying mixed.

+Martha Hoffer Thanks! I keep wanting to go bigger, but it gets real expensive real fast when looking at larger surfaces like claybord. So, I did try this a few days ago. I found that my heat gun drives the paper really, really fast, like in a couple of seconds. You need to have a lot of alcohol ink on the paper to move it around as shown in the video. I had similar results that were much more forgiving by using a blow dryer set on cool, and occasionally can of compressed air. I don't think the hot blast from the heat gun is really necessary. But, I never would've tried it and less you showed me this demo, so thanks!

The reason for the other subtle colors appearing is because colors like black, blue or red have other base tones that spice up the original color and it won't show unless you are diluting or in the case of colored grey hair, the color begins to fade. Then the undertones that were included in the dominant color shows itself.

Very nice technique. I tried this a couple of times and did not have a great outcome. After watching it another time I noticed that beetle is using a LOT of alcohol initially on the paper, and also a LOT of ink. This is critical to have enough time to move the color around on the paper. If you don't have enough alcohol, you will have a large blotchy white areas. If you don't use enough ink, it's going to be grayed out and sort of boring. And yes, a hairdryer on a low or medium setting will work just fine. If you use a heat gun you need to be careful and work really quickly or else the paper may well buckle.

Some ink colors are achieved by using more than 1 dye. As you dilute those colors you will reveal the true colors that were blended together in order to create the color that you originally started out with. For example, yellow & blue = green So, if you choose to work with green, as you dilute it, yellows & blues may appear. I'm glad you showed the end result & put it in the frame. This really puts the piece into prospective, even if it IS a $1 frame. Lol. Sometimes less is more. You did a beautiful job. Thank You 4 Sharing!

Those colors that appears when using black ink is due chromatography. The blak ink is not actually black, is a mix o color but each color is dragged by the paper at different rates. i.e. while one color (pinkish maybe) is slowed by the paper more than another (blue) they separates and the pinkish stays on the paper and the blue is moved by the air flow

Hi there, this effect is beautiful. Can you tell me what exactly does the alcohol do please?
@beetlewing
7 жыл бұрын
+fran mcgarry The inks are alcohol based, and by using more alcohol we basically just create a vehicle to move the colors around on the surface, like using water with watercolor paint. Conveniently, alcohol evaporates quickly, allowing us (or forcing us, depending on how you look at it) to work very fast.

thanks for the tutorial. I've been wanting to try this technique. I see you have a cookie sheet under your plywood. Is that what you've used before you had your plywood/sheetmetal setup?
@beetlewing
8 жыл бұрын
+Heather Laughter Still using the cookie sheet to catch runoff :) Note: Yupo is very sensitive to underlying surface textures... the subtle ridges on that particular cookie sheet show up in works as high/low spots that the ink runs from/to... that's what led me to making the (perfectly smooth) sheet metal and plywood work surface. Of course, a dollar store cookie sheet would have worked just as well, but I like the weight and stability the plywood adds.

Is there a less expensive version of Yupo out there... I've been pricing it and I can't believe the how expensive it is, especially since I've never done this technique before it would be nice to feel free to practice without spending so much money. From what I've read it's synthetic waterproof paper, so with that being said, what happens if I just tried to wipe it clean again with alcohol? How does anything really adhere to it permanently? It seems like you would have to frame it under glass immediately because any liquid touching the ink would affect it. I'm just guessing here, I've never seen or felt Yupo before...any info you can offer would be great.
@beetlewing
7 жыл бұрын
+Dawn Lueders Without even realizing it I think your question inspired my latest video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/265suqN8kH6ip34 Yupo is just sheets of satiny-smooth plastic. The inks work well on any non-porous surfaces like plastic, glazed ceramic tiles, glass, metal, etc because well... they’re magic. I don’t know the science behind it but it works. :) As for liquids messing with them, it depends. A little splash of water probably wouldn’t do too much harm, but yes, it should be either framed or sealed to protect it, but that’s true of most art. Watch the video linked above and you’ll find a great alternative that will let you experiment rather cheaply. Good luck and hope that helps :)
