Having that one little drink, to me, is like inviting a man who abused me over for dinner. The one drink may not do long-term harm, and I may escape unscathed...just like that abusive man may behave pleasantly during dinner and leave without doing harm. But it's not about whether that one drink will hurt me...it's about self-respect. I would never ever have anything to do with someone who abused me, much less invite him to dinner in my home. Why would I invite alcohol into my life again, even as just one drink?

Thank you, sir! I needed to hear this today. I gave myself a “back door” excuse to “only” drink in the airport lounge when waiting for a flight but sure as hell it lead to me justifying a “cheat day” after landing, as well. I whole heartedly agree, excuses are a symptom of withdrawal and they are very good at disguising themselves. Getting myself up and brushing it off. #nomoreexcuses

They say it takes 21 days to conquer a bad habit . Well today is my 21st day. I am so surprised I made it this long but to he honest. I've had opportunities to drink. But with the support from my friends they will make sure I'm on track. I know I'm not in the clear yet. There will be days I might think I want one but as of yet I haven't had any cravings. Not even one. I know what kind of consequences I'll have to deal with. I dont want to start over again. It will be a disaster if I start again. I have relapsed more than a few times. Just one drink will hurt. If I say those 5 words I'll take myself to AA. Or a doctors. I'm am going to reward myself by doing physical activities. I'm going to ride my bicycle for 10 km a day in the winter to make me release stress. I'm tired of feeling hungover in the mornings and being black out drunk. I love myself too much. I've seen people from alcoholism. Including my own mother. I see my loved ones dying slowly. It's so poisoning.

Good on ya! Since mid-2015, the number of times I quit (and subsequently re-started) drinking, I have lost count. It's kind of jaw-dropping to realize how many of us there are all in this same boat. But weirdly, I also feel that there is great strength in numbers. So many times I have taken comfort in the thought that I am not alone on this path. I wish and hope the same for you - and everyone else on the path! You are not alone!

One thing interesting ive noticed is how different people and things are to me sober. I met up with some friends a few days ago. It was at a local bar, i had soda and water...even just being in there made me feel grimy. I had no desire to drink but being in that environment made me realize how unattractive bars can be. It was a dump in there. It made me realize also that I had no business being there which is very different than my old self. I was a bar guy, loved them. But its because i was in my full addiction. When you dont drink, its clear that people are there mainly to drink together....alcohol is the priority. Why not meet up somewhere else to catch up? Aaahhh they wont go because there is no booze.....I used to sit at bars for hours and hours.....after about 30 minutes there, I was ready to leave... Early sobriety is tough...being a drunk is easy...but miserable...I dont want to be miserable...

I find not giving alcohol any significance and focussing on the present really works. It does get easier with time. I've had many slips in the first 3 years after quitting, but now for the first time I'm nearly a year sober. Not giving up and trying again is really worth it - I rarely think about it and finally I feel free. You learn something new each time you relapse and you become wiser and more resilient and less likely to be tricked by those silly thoughts again. Also trying to understand the root cause of your drinking and dealing with it helps prevent relapsing too.

very impressed with what this man has presented to those who are finally ready to listen. just found out about this new resource for getting clean. greatfulness is a blessing once the chatter in your mind diminishes. and the really wonderful thing about that is, it doesn't have to be anything really big! a perfect cup of tea, the sun shining on your face or even a good Bowell movement. I'm reminded of that scene in the movie " network" where Albert Finney says go to the window, open it and shout out " I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!". that's the way I feel and I just PRAY! that it will be enough to sustain me in this fight for my life and sanity. I would say I wish everyone could feel hope and desperation in this quest. peace to all.

Go to a different store. Even if it's out of the way. I used to go grocery shopping and stop by my favourite pub to have a drink before shopping to curb my anxiety. Then it so happened that I could not leave the fricken bar stool and then the store and bar would be closed. I dont know why I'd gravitate to the bar and why I was opposed to leaving early but now I completely avoid that grocery store. There are 2 liquor stores and 4 lounges that are just too tempting for me. I wasnt strong enough but now I am. For now anyways change of scenery will do wonders

Yes becausealcohol is carb filled empty calories. Which is why diabetes is thrivant amongst alcoholics. Your craving the sugar that comes from alcohol. And also it could be because you had unhealthy eating habits while drinking. So your body will crave these substances. 21 days to get your body to dismiss these cravings. I'm on 21 days today. I just ate three cookies. But that's ok. I'll take three cookies over 1,2 or 3 drinks any day.

Truth Warrior, you did that. If you feel a higher being helped you, that's fine. But don't go criticizing others who don't believe the same. I know it feels disappointing when you have found something good and others don't share in that belief. But that's their right. That said, I think people should be more understanding and considerate of each other's beliefs, AS LONG AS they're not encroaching on others!

AA is one way BUT it is not the only way! AA has a 8% success rate and should not be the default option

AA is definitely not for everybody. The last thing I want to do with my new sober life is go to meetings and hear sob stories.
