As a person whose pursuing a possible career in psychotherapy, I can say that (from what my psychotherapist professors mention) no person should ever feel like they’re guilty about making their therapist feel a certain way. It is not your fault for all the things that happened, and you don’t need to worry about what the therapist is doing, they know which resources to use and not let that get into the relationship you can build in sessions. So please, if you feel like this, know that a therapist never judges you of how fucked up your life it, they might be sad about the course of events, but what matters is that you become functional and thrive with the possibilities you have. Much love x

[Verse 1] He said "Take a seat over there, on the chair by the couch Tell me what you've been thinking about There's nothing you can say that's out of bounds You can trust me, swear I'm here for you now" I've heard it all before, he took out his pen But as he wrote down each, each thing that I said [Pre-Chorus] Oh, well, the mood just changed He started acting strange This was our next exchange [Chorus] He said "I'll tell you what, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can be Of any help, think I need help now," is what he said to me Might even need it more than me now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy "I tell you what, I'm sorry, but I thought I'd never see A case as bad as yours, don't think I have a remedy," mm Think he needs help now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy [Verse 2] So I got up from the chair where I sat by the couch He said to me, "Could you sit back down?" And I could see as I turned around Really needed someone he could talk to now, said "Thought that I'd seen it all, turns out I was wrong Wish I could help you out, you'll have to be strong" [Pre-Chorus] Oh, well, the mood just changed He started acting strange This was our next exchange [Chorus] He said "I'll tell you what, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can be Of any help, think I need help now," is what he said to me Might even need it more than me now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy "I tell you what, I'm sorry, but I thought I'd never see A case as bad as yours, don't think I have a remedy," mm Think he needs help now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy [Post-Chorus] I'm so messed up, I'm so messed up, I'm so messed up now I'm so messed up, I'm so messed up, I'm so messed up now I'm so messed up, can't you see? I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy [Verse 3] I went out yesterday to get food from the store And ran into the man from before Right by the exit door He stopped me to talk Said that he went to go and look for some help A funny thing happened and I said, "Do tell" [Pre-Chorus] Oh, and the story is, mm My doctor found a doctor and his doctor told him [Chorus] "I'll tell you what, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can be Of any help, think I need help now," is what he said to me Might even need it more than me now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy "I tell you what, I'm sorry, but I thought I'd never see A case as bad as yours, don't think I have a remedy," mm Think he needs help now, oh, the irony I'm so messed up, I sent my therapist to therapy

The lesson we could learn through this song is that everyone needs help, even if they look strong or dependable. For example, I considered my friend to be my therapist because he always shared sad stories and helped me feel better after all. However, one day, he told me he needed me to sit beside him and share his story. He probably felt his soul ruined and heartbroken.

Most therapists have their own personal therapists that they go to! It's a normal thing in that line of work. They're there to help you, to give you the tools you need to manage symptoms, improve your daily functioning, and to improve your quality of life, and they're doing this for many people. It's natural that they'll need someone to help them do the same, to help them with their own needs and help them be able to keep their clients' worries separate from the therapists' personal life. Never be afraid to share what you're feeling with your therapist, that's what they're there for! They have their own methods of managing their mental health. And having been in therapy myself for a long time, it's likely that when your therapist pauses to think on what you've said she's simply doing just that, thinking about it. They don't always have answers or a response right away. :) Sometimes they need to think on it and do their own research to figure out how best to help with a specific worry. And that's okay! It gives them a new tool to teach you that may help not only you, but also future clients with similar worries.

Now that I've listened to the song and watched the video its so well done, almost Alec being the one talking and being the therapist shows him going to see someone, but also that person being himself. Showing he can only rely on himself as like in the lyrics "I dont think that I can be of any help" meaning Alec now has to rely on himself. Amazing lyrics which match the depiction of the video!!

Ахаахссхахах, ему так идёт этот образ психолога 😅 Качество съёмки отличное, песня звучанием отличается от предыдущих, но мне всё равно нравится ❤

This song feels like a metaphor for generational trauma, especially for children who play the role of "therapist" for one parent or the other or both. And how the therapist role gets passed down and each case gets worse, to a point where the "therapist" kid can't handle it anymore and seeks comfort and help in the next "therapist" in the next generation.

wow! the song is beautiful! the storytelling is top notch as always! the video was excellent! I should have seen it coming but I didn't! you have shown me you are king of subtlety and how simplicity from inception can veil the matrix! keep raising the bar! ♥️🎶🙏🎶♥️

You guys...he's too talented. We gotta protect him so he doesn't turn into Sam Smith on our asses...(this is a joke abt the music industry, so children who are about 20 yrs older than me don't fight in the comments)

I have a playlist dedicated to my childhood trauma and how it affects my life now at 19, and I gotta say... between Not a Cynic, Boy in the Bubble, If I Killed Someone For You, and now this... I'm REALLY struggling to make that playlist anything but an Alec Benjamin playlist

Love this song! As someone who has gone through at least eight unofficial therapists and three official therapists, this song is very relatable!

Thanks for the comfort your music brings. I listened to "Gotta Be A Reason" on repeat for hours the night that my dog I grew up with passed away.

I LOVE THIS. The close up shots are just so good! Why do the glasses fit so well?? The acting is perfect! It feels like I'm watching a series or documentary. This is, by far, one of my favorite music videos. Not only that, but the song is so relatable! The vibe is sort of different from Alec's other songs, but yet still maintains the same story telling lyrics. So much work is put into these songs. Hope more music like this is released in the future 🤞

It’s so crazy that I seem to find your songs when they relate to my life the most. I understand that feeling of feeling like I’m freaking out my therapist lol. It just goes to show that us humans are all going through something. Anyways I really enjoy your music and this song is great! Keep it up!

I’ve been listening to Alec since I was in fifth grade (I’m 16 now) and I’ve listened to every song and album but this was the funniest title he had 😭 I KNOW IT’S SAD BC YK ISSUES BEING THAT BAD BUT STILL THE UNDERTONE IS LIKE HUMOROUS 😭😭
