I'm 60. I've been battling lymphedema in my legs for over 20 yrs now. I worked retail, customer service. On my feet all day long. Go, go, go. Swollen legs, ankles and feet. PAIN! I was going without a doctor. Just going to the local emergency room when the CELLULITIS hit. Leakage? Oh, cry me several great lakes! Part of the problem is that most doctors don't know what lymphedema is, what the dangers are. Or how to tell a patient how to cope. I had to quit working in my early 40s, because I couldn't manage the pain and cellulitis attacks any more. I was on welfare for years. I finally got on disability. It's been a terrible grind. For just over 2 years now I have been fighting horrific open wounds all around my lower legs. Pain? My mind has been shredded, I've considered suicide. It's been that bad. I've spent the last year in a rehab hospital bed, trying to heal. I haven't walked in a year. I've lost over 50 pounds. If you think that your legs, ankles and feet have been swelling a lot, PLEASE get some medical help. You don't want to live my life.

Thanks for the information. It is rather amusing that you keep saying to go to the doctor; they will know what the problem is and what to do. No, they don't. My whole life, I have had to diagnose any problem I have had and tell the doctor what it is, and I usually have to suggest what I'd like them to do in a polite way, so they don't refuse. The only area I've been able to rely on doctors for is the eye, eye specialists.

in my experience, i found that PAs (Physicians Assistants) are even better than Drs. Also many tend to lean toward whole health, naturopathic care. They also tend to be better listeners and seem to understand the problem you're having and work toward a solution. i always get the feeling that Drs are too busy to listen or care. they just want to throw a prescription at you and scram. Try looking for a Drs office that has a PA or two. i think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Take care!

My mother died at the age of 67 from sepsis from lymphedema complications. If your skin is weeping don’t ignore it and try to treat at home. See a wound care doctor right away. While it’s very important to keep the skin clean and moisturized other issues can be the cause of the swelling like veinous insufficiency or peripheral artery disease. I love Bob and Brad, and Mike and this video has great info but if you are googling help for this issue, please don’t wait. Go see a doctor to rule out any bigger issues.

I know from experience how serious this is. My sister passed away 4 months ago from Sepsis. It was from exactly what he is talking about. It happened fast. On a Monday she was fine we had a good day together a nice visit, thank the Lord, I'm so thankful we had that special time together. But, 😢by Tuesday we had to get her to the ER, by Wednesday afternoon she passed away at the hospital. So please take this serious and keep a close eye on you feet and legs. She was under a doctor's care, but she was never told that this could happen. She was putting lotion on, but couldn't wear the compression socks because of the pain. We had no idea that infection could start on dry swollen feet, until it was to late. 😢

Interestingly my dr has never mentioned the possibility of sepsis either. One of my legs was extremely severely swollen for a couple months before New Year (while my dr was away and I could not see him) and has caused permanent change in the skin and underlying tissue around my ankle. This last 2 weeks I have received 2 sessions of Medical Manual Lymphatic Drainage which has made a huge difference to my legs. This was not mentioned, let alone referred, by my GP but by a Thermographer as the thermography clearly revealed the reduced circulation in my lower legs. My GP had only suggested compression stockings, which I found physically impossible to put on without pulling and injuring my back, and fluid tablets which have terrible side effects.

When I was a truck driver, my leg would swell to the size of my jeans. Clear liquid would drip down my ankle, and would soak through my jeans. I had an ulcerated? open wound for years. Doctors tried horse wraps and other things that would not work. They would say they don't know what to do. Eventually I found a physical therapist who knew of a wet wrap that would dry on my leg before it started to expand. The wrap did not allow my leg to expand, and the wound was able to heal. Nowadays with the internet, I find people Dr. etc. currently have understanding and know what to do. Thank you for spreading the word about those infections, and how they occur.

Oops! I hit send before I finished my comment! As I was saying, I was prescribed Amlodipine for high blood pressure (I also take another med for high b/p), and had been taking it since Oct. of last year, and I hadn’t had a problem with my feet swelling until a few days ago. Right before bedtime, my feet felt “tight”, so I looked at them and was shocked at how swollen they looked! So, I did some tippy toe exercises and then elevated my feet and the swelling went down somewhat. My doctor did tell me that swollen ankles and gums could be possible side effects when he prescribed this med. What surprised me was I didn’t have any symptoms before this. Well, I was finally able to speak with the doctor today and he said the foot swelling can happen at any time, even a year later without any incidents of foot swelling up until then! So, I am now off that med, and he said the swelling should clear up completely in about two weeks. I don’t have a heart condition either, I just went through extensive testing recently and the cardiologist said I have a healthy heart. The reason I mentioned this medication and it’s possible side effects, is because we all have to be aware of the side effects of meds prescribed to us. Thank you for informing us of the importance of hydrating our skin, in order to prevent bacteria from getting in through the cracks. I moisturize, however, I wasn’t aware of that danger! Thank you once again!

Easy way to don Compression socks w/ the toe, put your hand in it until your fingers are down by the toes of the sock, unroll the sock down your arm until just about the heel. The calve part of the sock should be dangling not all bunched up. Put the foot in the foot portion of the unrolled sock and properly align. Grab the elastic top of the sock and pull up the leg. Should be on! Also can hand wash w/ antibacterial soap after work hung up and typically dry before next shift. I used to work 12hr shifts back to back and this is what I did.

As a wound care nurse that treats patients at home this is such a frustrating diagnosis. With keeping feet and legs moisturized and dry please tell them to keep legs elevated when sitting. The doctor will recommend to watch their salt and sugar intake. Listening to doctors directions and following them is the ONLY way they will heal and stay healed. Problem is most of these patients don't listen yet think it is the doctors reason they aren't better.

I agree with you that’s what I was thinking. Elevating the feet & legs is the main thing for this I thought? And gentle massage? Since it’s a blood flow issue, isn’t it usually? My right foot used to always start, then my left when I was working. As soon as I got home & showered my feet went up in the recliner or I would go lay down. My bp was always up when I was working though. Not anymore thank God! Retirement fixed that issue. Lol The lotion I use for massage if any inflammation does start though is called Blue Stop ointment. This stuff worked amazingly well for my swollen feet & ankles back then too. Just the lotion alone seemed like it promoted blood flow. It’s an emu oil based product. Doesn’t take much at all & smells great.

Hi Bob and Brad. I like your site because it is honest, sincere, and helpful. I have edema and dry skin, but it used to be much worse, and wept. I used Desitin cream. I would spread the cream on my newly showered and dried legs. It helped A LOT. The doctor even noticed. I do not use it every day, but every third day or so. And, not use too thick a layer, just a thin layer will do. Desitin has zinc oxide which heals the skin naturally. I hope you will try it with your mom and let me know how it works out for her if you do. God bless you.

Tip for applying compression stockings: Sprinkle a little talcum powder on the foot and spread evenly, roll the sock from the top/ cuff down to the toe/end, forming a doughnut appearance. Place the rolled sock at your toes and “unroll” the sock onto your foot , keep unrolling until the sock is on, if any adjustments are needed, lightly dampen your fingers and pull the sock into place.

I spent 3 months in a nursing home for physical therapy to be able to walk. I could not stand, could not guide my feet into shoes. I was so weak i could not even turn myself in the bed while aides diappered me! My feet and legs were so swollen husband had to buy me shoes 3 sizes larger. Each by 7am ( on shower days at five)was assisted to sit in a wheelchair for 6 or more hours with my feet on the floor. By the time my therapists arrived to assist me in walking my feet and lower legs were swollen to three times their normal size. I suffered terrible pain up my left shin. A nerve pain shut up it feeling like the hide was being pulled off like skinning a fish with pliers. It was only for an instant. I could not have stood it longer. Taking off hose left a snowfall of flaked skin. Trying to walk on them was a sad joke. In the hospital a bedside portapotti enabled an aid to assist me on to it. I simply could not stand up to turn and sit on the toilet. The thing was in a corner. No way an aid could help from each side so l had to be diapered in my bed. I'd lost over 80 lbs. At 5'7" I was down to 94 lbs. Most of the aids were wonderful but there was no way I could elevate my feet in that chair. My doctors prescription? Gabapentine. The stuff did nothing but put me to sleep. I did not realize how dangerous that was. At home I keep my feet elevated as often as possible. The legs did weep, but it as my arms that really seeped so badly my bedding would have to be changed. At home my husband was easily able to assist me in putting on socks and slacks and helping me to the bathroom. The dear man even had to diaper me for a few days. Within a week could stand with help and walk with a walker. The best ng that happened was when Medicare no longer covered costs and I was booted out. My pc prescribed a very expensive ointment that did absolutely nothing. Taking furosimide ( water pill) daily does help. Thanks for this video.

How long, on average, does it take to get edema out of your system (mainly in feet and calves). My cardiologist said the edema was caused by drinking too much water while being on carafate. He prescribed Lasix.

Thank you for this video! My right leg from the knee down to toes has edema. Once it weeped what was very scary to me my family had went to amusement park so I had wrapped it with the ace bandage before the swelling started to not to have stiffness and to fit it in my shoe The strange thing is in the winter time it does not swell. When I lay down to go to sleep overnight the swelling goes away sometimes it immediately swells upon standing other times it takes several hours Told my doctor about this only thing they said is not to wrap it with ace bandage anymore and wear compression which is awful in the summertime. Over the internet I found heat edema would you please do a video on that subject hopefully I can get it under control and get rid of it.

What help my oedema after 15 years of pitting and swelling was the last strew...fasting. I drank just juice for 6 weeks with one nutritious meal a week. Then after 6 weeks, I water fast for 5 days, back on for another 5 weeks of juice and eating low amounts of fruits and vege. ALL GONE...No more weeping, pitting no more edema. Also walked hour a day, 1/2 hour in the morning, 1/2 afternoons.

My doctors said that my swelling in my ankles is from my back. I guess because I have spinal stenosis, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, bulging and herniated discs, and neuropathy in my feet. I have tingling and numbness down both legs and arms sometimes, and just recently it started getting worse because when I move my neck or left arm a certain way the numbness and tingling get really bad from my shoulder to the tips of my fingers. It's scary because of all of this, I have chronic pain and I'm 46 years old. If I keep living what is my future going to look like? I would love to live till I'm really old, and I hope I do, but I don't think the issues I have get better. I'm starting physical therapy again, but what else can I do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have same issue, stems from my spine. Only thing that has helped me is water aerobics..for last 15 years, everyday I can. Water exercise doesn't put pressure on joints, knees, back etc. It does strengthen my muscles around my spine to keep my unstable spine in place! If I go a couple days without water exercise, my spine nicks my spinal cord. Your nerves should improve and the pain gets better, but it's not overnight. Start out just walking in water, it's the right pressure for me to get lymph system to drain fluid. I wish you all the best!

Post surgery my foot was looking like Frankenstein, swollen big with a scar and skin purplish blue in color. The skin was dried and scaly, not only around surgery wound area in the ankle but also up to my lower limb below the knee. I had flaky skin falling all over the floor. The doctor told me to soak the foot in warm water daily which I do before shower, then after shower I would apply vitamin e lotion, leave it to dry and put on fresh tubular/compression sock and high crew sock over it. It helped improve the dry skin, but took more than 12 months before the swelling receded. I am still doing this daily up till now even though the surgery was around 2 years ago. It may take longer to recover perhaps because mine is a complex case of medical error which was discovered when the plaster cast was removed.

Yikes! I have terrible red/purple swelling in one foot/ankle/leg. The skin is all bumpy and scaling. I have 2 leg wounds that happened 6-8 weeks ago…still open sores and painful. Also sweaty feet. I have not been to doctor but y’all are scaring me. Because of the continuing redness I’ve wondered about infection. And I did have a fever and feel horrible for a few days. I do not have diabetes but I do have fibromyalgia so my system is generally not optimal function.

I had a very severe lisfranc injury to my foot. All the bones were broken and dislocated. It is now 7 months after the operation and I am still in the recovery stage. There is a lot of swelling (edema) still after the operation. I do keep the foot elevated and make use of a compression sock. Although it seems that the incisions have healed properly, for the last few weeks now, blister-like sores have appeared on the incision scars. The foot is very painful and seems to have some nerve damage. I can't bend some of my toes still and when touching the skin of my foot, I experience very poor sensations like tingling and numbness in the foot.

I wish you had posted this 2 months ago. I’m recovering from a broken leg and I learned much of this bit by bit as I’m recovering. Plain vaseline and that roll of stocking that you cut to size has been my life saver. Also those scrubby bath mitts are great for removing dry flaky skin. I also found that an unscented gentle cleanser on the affected leg is a lot more comfortable than regular scented soap or body wash. Also, as soon as I gained the quad strength to do so, lifting my leg high up to reduce swelling gives almost unreal relief when the swelling gets bad. I still have a boot, so I can’t see the swelling (mostly in my foot and lower leg). I have some nerve damage so not full sensation yet, but I’ve learned to tell what sensations in my foot mean it’s swelling, even if the pain is not bad yet. I get pins and needles up and down the top of my foot and when it feels like something is in between my toes, it’s means there is swelling there. I tell my family I have to stop everything and put my leg up.

Diabetic foot cream. Your mom needs to be seeing a podiatrist. They see and treat this sort of thing all the time. I'm not diabetic. My Podiatrist likes to mix foot cream and Vaseline, equal parts. He said any foot cream was fine. The diabetic version has some pain killer in it. If you want to go with a lotion get unscented. Your mom needs her problem diagnosed. Her leg swelling could be a blood circulation issue or very possibly a lymphatic system issue. I understand there are people who specialize in lymphatic drainage massage which might be of benefit. Compression stockings and socks are available every where. They come in all sorts of shapes, compression strengths, and price range. Have her doctor's not suggested compression stockings? Her Cardiologist or Podiatrist can suggest what level of compression to get.

Well, is it a lot of trouble to tell us what type of doctor is the specialist I need to see? Also, what is the name of the tube and where can it be bought and does it come in different pressures and who will tell me what pressure I need? HELP !!! 🤠☕☕🍉🍉🍓🍓

The tube sock is called tubi-grip. They don't come in different pressures, only different sizes depending on size of your legs. My family physician knew nothing. I had a vein ultrasound done by a vein specialist and was told it wasn't my veins. The tubi-grips didn't work for me. The vein specialist recommended compression wraps which I now use, but I have to use them for the rest of my life.

We use Eucerin or Sarna cream at the hospital…NO, I don’t work for those companies, but YES I’m sure folks could use the generic brand of same & YES, the hospital probs gets it from the manufacturer with the biggest kickback which they don’t pass to patients, which is just ANOTHER reason we need nationalized healthcare, thanks for listening 🙄…& YES, probs, you would be better with a more natural, non-petroleum based product, but I can’t give advice on that because modern medicine actually sucks…just watch out for allergies if trying alternative/natural lubricants/moisture barriers on your skin, especially with open/non-intact areas - like when testing new cleaning products on a surface - a quarter sized area first & WAIT ‘till after absorption: clean legs/feet & dry THOROUGHLY (yes, between toes, even if ticklish 🙄), get light compression socks (better if you go to primary physician/have ABI measurements/prescription/compression stocking fitting appointment, etc & it would also be better if a doctor/nurse fairy would come to people’s houses & do it for them if they put their prescription under their pillow, too, but unfortunately these days both are about as likely to happen & it’s a lot of DIY & hospital/Emergency care in reality 2023 - I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now & NO this way is NOT better, but it’s all we have FOR NOW 😏…stay tuned for 11/5-6/2024 USA 2.0, though)…🤫continue:…elevate legs above heart level as much as possible & if you sleep in a recliner, feet UP!…& WEAR socks w/grippers or rubber soled slippers, or you’ll find lotion with compression stockings is one of the BEST ways to end up in a best fall/fail clip or wish desperately someone had been filming you cuz you’d have a broken arm, but you’d also have a million likes or you’ll just have a “I’ve fallen & can’t get up” type situation. 😬 rl RN
