Primus recorded their 'Pork Soda' album with four of these machines linked together. Supposedly they used over 80 S-VHS tapes during the making of that record.

This will only work with adat tapes. They look identical to VHS but there purple.

@@robertpawn ADAT cassettes weren't always purple. There were some later ADAT cassettes from EMTEC that were black. All that said, ADAT machines basically use Super VHS formulated tape and a Super VHS cassette has a hole on one of the bottom rear corners (can't recall which at the moment) for a sensor switch that would identify it as a Super VHS cassette in an SVHS deck ... or an ADAT cassette in an ADAT deck. SVHS cassettes sold as ADAT may be preformatted by the manufacturer for immediate use. Otherwise, as you know, a Super VHS video cassette must be formatted for ADAT prior to recording. Regular VHS cassettes won't work on an ADAT machine, at least not without modifying the cassette shell to make the machine think it's an ADAT cassette. Of course, why would you want to do that? Tape formulated for VHS isn't suitable for ADAT, so you'll wind up with a bad recording by making an ADAT machine record audio onto a regular VHS cassette.

Yes you primarily use SVHS tapes, but I have used ordinary VHS tapes which work the same.
@Watcher3223

@@nickfatsis9607 There's also the trick of using ordinary VHS tape to record Super VHS. However, the catch is that some VHS tape doesn't record Super VHS video all that well (very grainy picture). It would depend on the characteristics of the formulation (such as coercivity), but VHS tape generally isn't meant to record higher bandwidth video. (Conversely, there's Super VHS ET, which works with minor alterations to the Super VHS standard with respect to VHS tape as well as having the VCR optimally calibrate itself to the characteristics of regular VHS tape in order to be better able to record Super VHS video. However, even the Expansion Technology process has its limits as some VHS tape still doesn't lend itself too well to recording SVHS video.) The same holds true for ADAT; SVHS tape has characteristics that enable it to record ADAT digital audio information more reliably than VHS tape. So, I conditionally stand corrected; while you may be able to record ADAT onto regular VHS, it's not recommended, especially if you're recording an important project where it's not appropriate to take such chances in an effort to cut costs.

The ADAT was a cost effective way to record in the early 90's. Each tape could record 8 channels of digital audio. You could sync up 16 of these together and record 128 channels. Later models started getting hard drives in them and it became a great sampling.

When ADAT came out, the only other way to simultaneously record 8 synchronized tracks on to 1 piece of media was to own a large multi inch analog tape machine. Those things cost hundred of thousands (dollars) and often required expensive maintenance and a full time tape operator. At this time the average Pc Hard drive was still pretty small (maybe a couple 100 Mb) and digital computer based recording was in its infancy. ADAT made multi track recording accessible to smaller studios. An ADAT recorder was about 4,000 dollars back then (about 6,000 inflation adjusted) and the tapes it used were cheap (standard VHS) and could be bought any were. That being said … those machine were NOT very reliable. And because the information was recorded digitally any degradation or damage to the VHS tape would often mean you lost a lot work. The VHS tape format was not really designed for long term storage data storage. That all being said many albums in the 90s started on ADAT, and that format opened the door to cheaper studio time for many rock musicians.
