I can remember seeing SAHB in Brighton in 1980, they got on stage an hour late, pissed from the pub, Alex had a fight with the band manager on stage, they then proceeded to play a fantastic set. They don't make 'em like Alex anymore. Liam Gallagher thinks he's a bad boy...Alex would have eaten him for breakfast.

This song was written by the Belgian singer songwriter Jacques Brel about the atrocities of war and its perverse ramifications. Performed by the spectacular Sensational Alex Harvey Band and it's inspirational leader Alex Harvey. David Bowie recorded the Brel song, "Amsterdam," which was another example of life's malfeasance. I had the good fortune to see SAHB twice in concert in the late 1970's at the Odeon Cinema, New Street, Birmingham, U.K. Alex was the consummate performer and his band, lead by the would be mime Zal Cleminson, who's eccentricities complemented the vaudevillian theatrics, were the complete package. Frenetic front man, brilliant back-up band, super gig every time ... a special moment in the annals of musical history.

Tristan Williams Yup, also saw them twice, 74 & 75 I think, in Sheffield. Never seen anything like them, before or since. At the first concert I seem to remember Alex having a bullwhip (to control Zal) . Relaxed yet tight, spontaneous, wonderfully inventive & entertaining, they defied categorization. It amused me when people dismissed them as 'glam rock'. How do you pigeon hole a band that can do the above, Sergeant Fury, Faith Healer, Anthem (about the most Scottish thing I've ever heard), The Hot City Symphony, The Tomahawk Kid ........?? Incredible. Sadly they were obviously at loggerheads by the second show. Alex seemed to decline pretty rapidly after that & died stupidly young. But what a star! What a character! I'll never forget him & the band, & I can't imagine anyone else who saw them will either.

Yes I would concur with that. An incredibly powerful song by Brell, and an absolute tour de force by Alex. When you think of the subject matter and the power of that performance it still makes my bood run cold every time I see it. No other song has done that.

I'd never heard them or even of them, my brother took me & of course it blew my mind totally & i saw them at least another 5 times. I saw a lot o good bands in the Apollo but Alex was the most captivating guy i've ever seen. Thanks again.

I've always felt that he must have picked up many lessons in staging and his own theatricality from those months/years he was a pit band guitarist for "Hair" on stage. I bought the London cast album just to have his performance on that. Also, by the time he formed the SAHB he'd been in show business so long that he'd had the chance to see the best and the worst of how to present yourself to an audience, and how to push the envelope which he and Chris, Ted, Zal, and Hugh certainly did do!!!!! To glorious effect. The styrofoam wall, and the shotgun light alone were "worth the price of admission". I was in Glasgow in 2006 and hoped to catch the reformed band (they were playing a lot that summer) but it wasn't to be. I also tried to find their business office to stop in and say "this American loves this Scottish band"... never did find the address. Anyway, I will always enjoy my vinyl of "Live" and "The Impossible Dream" and my memories of seeing the band live twice in the '70s. And Glasgow's lovely!!!
