Have a look at Austin Carlile in "You make me sick", "this one's for you" or "bones exposed". Legendary screams, another level than Chester.. But Austin's singing voice isn't that good, Chesters was amazing. Miss you, legend. RIP Chester

My respect for Alex went even higher when he gave Chester the ultimate compliment. RIP Chester Bennington
@DemonLordRaiden

Fun fact for the comments! The reason Chester's 17 second scream is impressive in this track compared to screams in metalcore, deathcore, and death metal (compare 17 seconds to [Fit For a King's] Backbreaker's ~25 second scream) is that Chester actually screams. It sounds silly, but let me explain -- Most metal screams are done with either the false chord or fry technique. Both avoid using the vocal folds, as that's how you damage your voice. False chord uses the false chords, which are the upper half of the thyroarytenoid muscles, while fry uses vocal fry: try saying "Uhhhhhh" kinda quietly and placing the word in your throat. It sounds kind of gurgly and, for lack of a better term, vibratey. That's vocal fry, fry technique just forces that to have higher volume through training with the involved muscles. Both techniques use very little engagement of the vocal folds as a point. It's why a lot of metal screams sound similar: there's not a whole lot of engagement from the vocal folds, so it's all about placement, resonance, body type, and distortion. That isn't to say they can't sound different, but that's mostly about technique and the little bit of vocal fold interaction. Chester didn't use either, from what many can tell. He took a yell, which uses the vocal folds, and added distortion. That's MUCH harder to do, honestly, and can absolutely ruin your vocal folds. You can tell because if you listen to Chester's scream (or Alex trying it here) you can hear the vocal quality has a little "waver" to it, for lack of a better term. That's vocal fold engagement. When Alex does the roar, however, it sounds like one streamlined sound with the tiniest bit of that waver. That's because the pressure isn't on the vocal folds, but on something else. This stylistic choice is also why Chester's screams sounded so uniquely Chester: his voice was the backbone of the scream. It's also why it sounds so similar to his singing voice, whereas Alex and most other metal vocalists don't sound so close to the same when they scream vs when they sing. Another difference in Chester's style and most metal vocalists is breath. The way Chester did it used a lot of breath: try singing and put your hand in front of your mouth, feel how much air that uses. Now try doing the "Uhhhhhh" thing from earlier and try that. Screaming in one of the two oft-used techniques doesn't take much air because you're relying on various parts of your body to make and project the sound. You're using your space more efficiently. Chester basically brute-forced a scream, and while it sounds amazing, it's inefficient. That's part of why the 17 second scream is so impressive, and also why Alex sounds out of breath after doing it for only a fraction of the time, but can do his metal screams for a really long time and not seem winded. The diaphragm plays into this too, but I don't know as much about the mechanics of diaphragm and breath control working together, I just know how they feel -- I'd wager Alex couldn't replicate it because he's been screaming in a more metal-oriented, safer way for years and doing it that way is probably painful as well. But the roar he does immediately after is placed differently in the throat, using one of those two mentioned techniques (knowingly or unknowingly, it's just how our bodies produce vocal distortion best), and is more what he does: he knows how to distort, project, and empower a scream placed somewhere like that. There's a reason in the later years of Chester's life, he couldn't always do the scream and had to have help on part of it: the way he did it is really bad for the vocal folds. None of this is to trash Chester, I loved him as a vocalist and lyricist, but just so that all of you could learn something from the knowledge I've accumulated over the years and be a bit safer if you want to try to make these sounds yourself.

@Jayce Ledet I may have given the wrong impression: most metal screamers have part of their own voice in there, but there's minimal vocal fold engagement for risk of damaging your voice. His scream is very unique because he does a good job putting more of it in safely, while letting the false chords carry the actual brunt of the screaming. None of what I said above was meant to imply screams can't be really unique, because they are, just that too much vocal fold engagement is often detrimental to your longevity as a vocalist.

@Flahtort

@ibuprofeno2979
