His book Crossings is one of my all time favorites. Very strong focus on its subject, the US Mexico border, without feeling exploitative or going into poverty porn territory. It is very much an honest portrait of the region at the time. A lot of the images from Crossings are also available in La Calle but they lose some of the context. Both are recommended though.

I’m with you on the new vs older work. And I think it’s due to a mixture of reasons. 20 year gap is part of it sure but then the type of stuff that he shoots nowadays often feels more modern. He used to shoot a lot in more troubled parts of the world and paired with slide film in the lighting scenarios that he was shooting made for a very unique look. He has an amazing eye for composition but years are passing and we all change. Maybe he just gravitates in different kind of photos nowadays. At the end of the day, even at this price point slide is still available and if it was interesting for him I bet he could still afford to shoot it. I wish his older books weren’t out of print or so expensive on eBay because I would really like to have a closer look on some of his older books. All in all though it doesn’t look like a bad book, it’s just that you know how good the older ones were.

@@pushingfilm oh and as for book recommendations, I ordered a few days ago a book that I had on my radar for a very long time but was £300+ on eBay: Morocco by Harry Gruyaert. They finally did a reprint and I got from Amazon for £35. Another book I’m expecting is from Robbie McIntosh, not sure if you are aware of him, he’s doing work mainly in the streets of Napoli and at the beaches nearby, some great looking work, really looking forward to this one.

@@alexandermatragos Nice! I can also see it available as a preorder from Amazon here for late April release, same price (I'll try not to impulse buy it immediately 😅). I'm not aware of Robbie McIntosh... but that sounds good, I'll have to look into it!

Unfortunately, the Suffering of light can only be found second hand for 3, 4, even 600 EUR/USD. A shame it's not been reprinted yet... Thanks for the review, as always amazing work 😊
