Sadly, we lost Johnny Barnes in 2022 - Farewell John and thanks for all the wonderful music down the years. From one Great Western fan to another.

I was down the 100 Club one night sometime around '67 - '68 when Alex Welsh was playing and got talking to a jovial little American at the bar. He let me buy him a drink and after a few moments realised it was Wingy Manone. I still think "WOW".

Captally. I played there a few years back. Apart from our applause that we were about to be amongst the last JAZZ bands to play there, my overwhelming memories are the belligerent attempts to stop us from parking the band bus and the abominabe stench from the 'Gent's Toilets.' I

My uncle, Art Sanders, used to run the Wood Green Jazz Club where I regularly attended the Sunday night sessions. The Alex Welsh band was a great favourite of mine along wuth my very favourite, Fredddie Randall. But then the core of Alex's band was ex Randall musicians. Two terrific English bands. RIP Alex & Freddie.

Martin Platt.. Great great band. Uk's finest small dixie- mainstream band of those days. Great, great times. Bollox to the Beatles who wrecked it with 'children's music!' They said that they travelled across Scouslandia on a bus because they'd heard that somebody knew of a `B7 Chord'. Never crossed their minds to work it out? I did in 5th form at school and I was and still am a bloody wood wind blower!

Great Swinging band! Always loved Johnny Barnes especially in his days with the Mike Daniels Delta band! JB had a great sense of humour too - I remember him recalling that he once mentioned to his mum that he was going out to Quatar next week for a gig and his mum said " Oh! That's a pity - Dad's on Nights that week!"

Yeah, a truly great band. Roy Crimmins was really good but Roy Williams was sensational! I followed the band for many years - St Albans jazz club etc., and even played their intevals at Osterley Jazz Club with my band the Mike Graham JB. Roy Williams is my absolute trombone hero and I have always tried to use his style as the basis for my own. I think we are both getting a bit long in the tooth these days but I am still getting there. 'Onya Roy!

Notice how Williams gets it all done with an absolute minimum of very close slide positions. How do these greats do this? The only thing I know about the trombone is how to put in its case safely. Mind you, I am a bloody saxist! (Played with this guy 3 times!) Remember every fragment of jazz I learned.

@@joesmith34 Very sadly I think he got bored with playing. I believe he also had an accident of some sort, which made touring more difficult. I believe he taught private students for a time, but after the Ronnie Scott gig came to an end there were less playing opportunities. Dick Pearce is now the sole survivor of the band and even he is semi-retired - a great pity as he is a brilliant brassman
