In the 4th century BC, when Alexander the Great discovered the place that would later become Alexandria, it was a simple fishing village on a coastal lagoon, surrounded by marshes.
Yet it was there that the conqueror, Alexander the Great set out to build the most dazzling and most cosmopolitan of ancient great cities. Built from nothing, the city with its perfectly geometric design, would rise as one gigantic block from the land, and become home to up to 1 million people. Its avant-garde style would revolutionise ancient urban design. Ideally situated between two "seas", between two worlds, between the East and the West, Alexandria would become the market place of the Mediterranean world.
