Alexis hit as hard as any 135 lb man has ever hit. As good a finisher as I've ever seen. What you're seeing here is what happens when a very good fighter finds himself in the ring with a legendary one.

Ray was an exciting fighter to watch on the weekends. He was in over his head with Alexis. This one here wasn't really mentioned much then, as the networks were getting ratings with Ray's bouts. I wish Alexis didn't go up in weight. That, obviously was a monumental mistake. Alexis was one of the true greats.

The announcers, along with about three-quarters of the crowd, wanted the gritty little (five-four-and-one-half) Italian-American Mancini to upset the much taller (five-nine-and-one-half) ,MUCH-harder-hitting, stronger Nicaraugan Argeullo .That said,Boom Boom's great heart and bodywork troubled "El Flaco De Exlosivo" ("the Explosive Thin Man") until about the tenth, when Arguello's advantages began to overcome Mancini's will and the late, great Latin champ stopped the Buckeye from Akron,O. in the fourteenth. Great bout by two class acts.RIP,Alexis;you'll always be remembered !!!!

Now that's an all time fight right there: Sal Sanchez v. Alexis Arguello. Two of the 25 best fighters of all time and two of the four best Latin fighters ever. Two warriors too. This could only be a 15 round fight. None of that 12 round shit. My heart is with Arguello. He was a little bigger and stronger and could knock you out with either hand. But Chava would be no joke. He only lost one fight ever and I watched tape of him destroy Wilfredo Gomez and The Professor Azumah Nelson. Flaco W15

For that era Mancini was a “B” fighter. He was a step below the elite. His next fight would be against the WBA title holder Art Frías that would end in the 1st round with Mancini getting the title. If you look at how Mancini was managed it was clear his management team knew Mancini was limited. I mean come on his title defense was against an over the hill Ernesto Espana. But in that era it was difficult to keep dodging good opponents forever and they finally had to fight someone legit in Livingstone Bramble who before he became a head case was quite good. Probably the best for Mancini because at that time Edwin Rosario was knocking on the door for a title shot and Mancini would have been destroyed by him. As for the great Argüello at that time there was talk of a match between Sal Sanchez and Argüello and it was rumored that Don King-he unfortunately handled Sanchez-had already prepared some preliminary paperwork on the match. But Argüello made it clear that he wasn’t going to wait around and wanted to move up while Sanchez still had work to do at 126. Sánchez-Gómez was the first %100 Latino non heavyweight fight to break the million dollar gate. Sanchez-Argüello would have been even bigger. Both great fighters well respected and both very courteous. Would have been a great great fight. A fight that would have ended very late seeing how both men methodically wore their opponents down. A KO that easily could have come in the 15th. But which way would it have gone???

Mancini was a tough kid, but a little out-classed vs. Arguello. Arguello was beaten by Pryor because he moved up into a weight class he didn't belong in to try to attain a 4th world title. Nobody could touch him in the lower weight classes. In the lightweight division, I doubt anyone could punch harder than Arguello in his prime.

Who the hell is Kid Pambele? I've seen every best ever boxer list and he didn't make any of them. And if he did it was near the bottom. The video of the 15 best Latin fighters on here is at least steeped in reality. I reject completely any suggestion that Marquez, Benitez and El Terrible were better fighters than Sal Sanchez. I saw his fights and Chava is in whole different class with Duran, Chavez and Arguello. Sanchez lost 1 fight ever and he wasn't fighting scrubs either.
