DISCLAIMER: BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL AROUND THE CAPACITOR, THERE ARE MANY GOLD WIRES AS THIN AS A HAIR. IF YOU TOUCH THESE THEY WILL BREAK AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REPAIR YOUR ECU. If you do not feel confident about this repair send your ECU to ECU.de or ecutesting.com! I have a new method of repair which uses conductive epoxy which is a lot less risky.
After removing the muffler from the last episode we started the car and it died after 10 seconds of idling. Turned out as luck would have it the ECU had died on the car.
After doing some research and trying lots of different things we were able to confirm it was the ECU. The fix was pretty simple, replace a single capacitor in the ECU and the car was working again. Super glad we got it working because a replacement ECU for these cars is around $3000 NZ!
This is a common design problem on all GTAs so please watch and it might save you a lot of hassle/money. To seal up the ECU again simply use silicon sealant, preferably high temp type. Also disconnect the battery for 5 minutes before disconnecting the ECU from the car.
