Lifeboat, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Tallulah Bankhead, is one of Hitchcock's most overlooked films. The film's single setting is a lifeboat stranded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
With a story by John Steinbeck and screenplay by Jo Swerling, Lifeboat explores power dynamics and the moral dilemma of rescuing an enemy, adding a layer of complexity and nuance to the story and asking questions such as: What are we willing to do to survive? How much are we willing to compromise for our safety? Is there a line that cannot be crossed?
Lifeboat is powerful and thought-provoking, but as one of Alfred Hitchcock's early 1940s films, it tends to get lost in his filmography. Its legacy was further diminished as a result of studio politics and wartime sentiments.
Eighty years after its release, Lifeboat continues to have a lasting impact and relevance. Tallulah Bankhead gave her best screen performance in this film, and its technical achievements and Hitchcock's innovative use of a single setting mark this film as an overlooked masterpiece.
