Naoko KOTANIGUCHI
Kobe native Naoko Kotaniguchi attained both undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and gave her debut concert in 2000 after winning a Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Audition for Young Artists. She has performed with the Tokyo New City Orchestra. In 2001 Naoko won 2nd prize in the Japan Woodwind Competition, and in the following year, won 1st prize in the Takarazuka Bega Music Competition and participated in the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Opera Project. Other prizes Naoko has been awarded include the 1st prize in the clarinet section of the Music Competition of Japan, the Masuzawa Prize (the first wind player to win in the history of the competition), and the E. Nakamichi Prize. Naoko has performed with the New Japan Philharmonic, and in 2004 took part in the Idéal Clarinet Abend (Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo). In 2005 Naoko took part in the International Clarinet Festival in Tokyo and gained the admiration of many international musicians. In 2006 Naoko took part in the Idéal Clarinet Abend Vol. 2, and in 2007 was selected as an Associate Artist by the Public Music Hall Activation Project, which involves performances and outreach activities in schools around the country. In 2009 Naoko performed as a soloist at the 25th Tokyo Summer Festival and at a Japan Youth Potential event, and appeared at the Tokyo Opera City recital series “B to C: From Bach to Contemporary Music”. In 2010 Naoko received a fellowship from the Agency of Cultural Affairs to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, and performed at the Wiener Musikvereinsaal. She also took part in Vienna Symphony Orchestra master-classes in Bregenz.
Further awards Naoko has received are the Kyoto City Art New Face Award in 2011 and the Kobe Cultural Incentive Award in 2012.
In addition to solo performances with all of Japan’s major orchestras and wind ensembles, Naoko has served on the juries of many major competitions, has appeared on NHK television and radio, has released a number of CDs and has gained considerable exposure in the media, including participating in round table discussions in music journals etc. So far, Naoko has studied the clarinet with K. Fujii, Y. Murai, M. Yamamoto, S. Kawabata, J. Hindler and G. Pachinger, and studied chamber music with G. Pokorny and A. Kouyoumdjian.
At present, Naoko teaches on a part-time basis at the Osaka College of Music and Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts, and is principal clarinettist with the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her orchestral work, Naoko gives frequent solo recitals and chamber music concerts, takes part extensively in outreach activities all over Japan, and has become Japan’s leading clarinettist. Her technical perfection and rich musicality have won her a loyal following.
