Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 20 miles south of Sheffield, is the town of Alfreton.
It is claimed by some that Alfreton was founded by King Alfred, hence the name, although this is disputed. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as 'Elstretune'.
In the Medieval era Alfreton's economy was based on agriculture. This began to change when deposits of coal and ironstone were discovered in the area. Alfreton colliery opened to the northeast of the town. By the 18th century Alfreton had become the chief coal mining centre in Derbyshire, and the third largest town in the county.
Iron working was a significant industry around this time. Other industries in Alfreton included rope making, brick and tile making and boot making/repairing. In the 19th century the population surged in the town as industrial workers moved in. Eventually, however, in the 1960s the pits closed. Local employment shifted to factory, retail and service-based jobs. Industrial estates grew around the former colliery lands.
The chocolate brand Thorntons, having been founded in 1911 in Sheffield, are today headquartered in Alfreton.
