It definitely took me a while, but I followed the tutorial to the end. On the first word problem; the equation itself was confusing, as of how it was constructed from the word problem, because I’m not used to word problems. The equation itself was very easy to solve.

12:18 subtracting the negative numbers are okay and aren’t wrong, but my teacher always recommended to leave the equation as positive as possible, so I added 30x and -2060 instead of the other way around, so it’s less hassle for me and I won’t have to make the numbers positive again. The answers are still the same 😊😊

Just work lots of examples, in the end there are only a handful of problem types. Once you see the set up over and over again, it becomes really easy to set the problem up and get a solution.

I thought part of the sentence, "17 more $5 bills than $1 bills", translates to "5(x+17)."
@Greenemath

Hi Vincent, we set x to represent the number of $5 dollar bills. Since the number of $5 bills is 17 more than the number of $1 bills, we can subtract 17 away from x to get the number of $1 bills.

Can you please solve this? Jerry has $85 in one-dollar bills and five-dollar bills. If he has one more than twice as many one-dollar bills than five-dollar bills, how many of each does he have?
@stevem79weprith47
7 жыл бұрын
Let x = the number of 5 dollar bills, let 2x + 1 = the number of 1 dollar bills, so for the equation it is...... 5 times x for the value of the 5 dollar bills and 2x + 1 times 1 for the 1 dollar bills. So it is 5x + 2x + 1=85, add x's together for 7x, subtract 1 from each side to get 7x=84, which equals 12, so take the 5 times 12 to get the value of your fives, 5 x 12=60, then 85 -60 to get 25, if you plug the numbers in you get 60 + 25=85, so 12 five dollar bills and 25 one dollar bills. 25 is more than twice 12... expressed as 25 is greater than 2 x 12 or 24.

let x = # of five dollar bills Then 2x + 1 = # of one dollar bills To set up an equation, we need to consider that each $1 bill has a monetary value of $1 and each $5 bill has a monetary value of $5. 5x + 1(2x + 1) = 85 5x + 2x + 1 = 85 7x + 1 = 85 7x = 84 x = 12 So from here, you can see that you have 12 $5 dollar bills and (2(12) + 1) or 25 $1 dollar bills. Check: $60 + $25 = $85

I don't get the total value part. Why not just put all in the equation solve for x then plug x into the original equations? Please help u lost me
@Greenemath
6 жыл бұрын
We are summing the total value of each type of bill and setting this equal to the given total in the problem. I don't know what you mean by put "all" in the equation?
@thisthat5
6 жыл бұрын
Like (x-17)+5x+(x+6)... an then just solve for x. Once you get x u just plug it into each one like (x-17)=
@Greenemath
6 жыл бұрын
It has to be set equal to something to solve for x. The scenario you are giving is just an expression. This can't be solved, only simplified. For the problem we have we set this equal to the total value of all bills, this allows us to find x and do the substitution part.
@thisthat5

I know that I was just showing you what I meant by "all". I should have said combining. But that still doesnt answer my question. If the expression i.e. x+6 is equal to 20 dollar bills why multiply it by 20 when it is technically suppose to be 20. so one so forth for the rest
@Greenemath
6 жыл бұрын
In your example (x+6) gives you the number or amount of 20 dollar bills. This isn't a value. Think about the money you have in your wallet or purse. You would get the value by multiplying the number of bills by their individual values. So if (x+6) is the number of 20's, then 20(x+6) would be the value of all your 20's. For example if you had 3 twenty dollar bills, saying you had 3 twenty's doesn't give us a value. It's when we multiply 3 x 20 to get a value of 60.
