The person who started Were music created Fuji because Fuji is a transformation of Were music. They started with Ajiwere, Ajisari, Faaji plays at Lagos Island, moved to studio for SPs, started with Sakara drums, added talking drums, Jazz, bata drums, piano, keyboard, guitar etc. That was the transformation. Barry continued the Fuji from Lagos Island and invited his friend Kolly to join him. However, Kolly introduced most of the instruments except guitar which was introduced by Agbadaowo. Barry had to recognise Kolly and Epo Aka as those who made the music popular. It was difficult to differentiate Awurebe from Fuji music. Why the controversy? Barry even said his music is a combination of Apala, Sakara, Highlife, Juju etc. Is that a new type of music?

This is not Monsuru's first record, his first was a single. He later became a Fuji artist after SAB's Fuji album. Monsuru Akande's waxed his first record before SAB, but it was not Fuji neither was SAB's first album (single). SAB was the first artist to wax a Fuji music album. He named Fuji, defined Fuji, promoted Fuji music all over the world. Some of our people are reluctant to give honor to whom honor is due. "History can never be rewritten", as long as the defenders of the truth are vigilant.

You are right but you were one sided. Barry's first Fuji was in 1974, the same year Kollington released his first Fuji record. Fuji was given birth in 1974. Kollington's first record was s single in 1971. Barry's first release was a single in 1966. The history of Fuji creation is actually shrowed in obscurity.🎉

Egba Alake, indeed Akande released some 7" single in the 60s, most probably before Barrister. According to his account to me personally in 1978 or thereabout, he released the first Fuji record or he was senior to Barrister in Fuji. I dropped off a 2nd cousin in Mushin area on my way to Ikeja on one Saturday in 1978. It turned out that he was visiting this Monsuru Akande fellow. Apparently, the M Akande had a parental connection to Ipokia area, the hometown of that cousin and my maternal grandmum. With some pleading from Akande, I ended up spending about 20 mins with him before I left - I think he lived in a room and parlour, or a small flat. At that point, Barrister and Kolington were already big names and considerably more successful than he was, because i have never heard of the fellow before then, but I was not exactly a Fuji fan. However, in one of the late interviews that Barrister gave (still somewhere on youtube), he acknowledged this Monsuru Akande and claimed that he was in fact his younger brother and not his senior as people claimed. Also, he claimed that he, Akande and KSA (Juju) recorded their first singles the same day - i think (not so sure again) he also mentioned that for one reason or the other, Monsuru single was released before his. If Barrister was willing to admit just a few years before he died (when he was a megastar) that the almost unknown Monsuru Akande recorded his first single the same day as him, then the claim of Akande that he recorded/released his first single before Barrister was likely true.

I think that is the point. Barrister admitted M. Akande released his single minutes ahead of his. But I doubt it was a Fuji music. Barrister himself at the time also did not record a Fuji album until few years later. It’s hard to discredit Barrister as the Fuji creator without evidently proffering somebody else that name their craft Fuji before SAB . Monsuru Akande however is an unsung legend

@@kazeemadedokun3484 I agree. The genre was christened Fuji in 76 or 77, so any record released by former Were singers before 76 cannot be called Fuji. Of the Were singers who became Fuji artists, there is no question that Monsuru Akande released the first single. There is also no question that Barrister is undoubtedly the Fuji creator.

EgbaAlake, I believe this album must have been recorded in the late 70s or early 80s. As you must have noted this is a long play record. The Were album he recorded in the 60s must be an SP i.e short play record, just about 3 minutes per track. Surely this album is a fuji album and not were. I have a strong believe that only the duo of Ayinde Barrister and Akande Monsuru recorded SP record among all the fuji artists, I stand to be corrected though. Thanks for the upload.

Barry has been claiming Fuji creator right from the outset. Claiming that he did not claim to be one in 1985 is simply WRONG! You are getting the wrong inference from his fertilizer album you referred to. SAB was never really challenged as being the father of Fuji until way later when Kollington released an album refuting SAB’s claim. The problem with the assertion that SAB did not create Fuji will always meet a brick wall of “who then”? If you claim is not barrister, then who it is? Really no answer

This is not volume one. Monsuru Akande has been playing this same genre of music for years before he decided to come over to Lagos in 1964. He waxed a record where he sang Bisimilahi and told the story of Prophet (Anabi) Noah. He was the one that took Alhaji Ayinde Barrister to where he also recorded later. At the same time, Alhaji Kollignton Ayinla was also doing his own music at a different location at Lagos then. This is why i can't join those claiming someone or the other is Fuji creator. Monsuru Akande is senior to both Barrister and Kollington in this genre of music, and i cant understand the claim of Fuji creatorship by either of the two, but if you talk of Fuji reformers and modernizers, no doubt, Alhaji Barrister or Kollington are the forerunners and they deserve to be so recognized. For me, both Barrister and Kollignton are great achievers, but neither of them created fuji

Abraham Babalola Thanks for the comment. Pretty much agree with most of your assertions. However, Vol.1 does not necessarily represent the first record waxed. It's usually referred to the LP albums that started coming out in 1969 or so . Yusuf Olatunji Vol.1 came out in 1969.Same goes to S.Aka. The likes of Babalegba,Haruna Ishola have been waxing the SP(7 inch albums) since the 40s. I believe Monsuru Akande made that point clear in this album. Just like Barry, he equally waxed many of the 7 inch albums. Same goes to Dauda Epo Akara. May their souls RIP.

Please could you listen to this record all over again. I would like to call it EXCUTIVE SUMMARY of this record without over flogging the issue at hand as regards to seniority in music between Late Alhaji Mosuru Akande & Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. From this record - Late Alhaji Mosuru Akande said he came to Lagos in 1964 and to joined a group led by a leader in 1966 and waxed a record for them without telling us what year he did his 1st record - Bisimillahi ( Itan Anobi) whereas, Dr. Sikiru Ayinde started singing Ajiwere in 1958. However, this record was NEVER recorded in late1966 as most people on this forum have indicated, because if you listen to this record carefully, you would able to distinguish between LONG PLAY (LP) &the SHORT PLAY (SP). This record is a LONG PLAY couple with those instruments used. I am very sure that this record should in late 70's because he was telling us those challenges he faced which some of them occurred in 1972 as he stated. Dr. Sikiru Ayinde had said this several times that he started Ajiwere in 1958 and he recorded 1st FUJI record in Nigeria in 1966. Cant Nigerian Journalists do their findings and go into the Music archived and shed more light on this? In the Music field - both Ajiwere and Fuji, Dr. Sikiru Ayinde is the most senior one to Late Mosuru, Kollington & others. Even recently, Kollington himself acknowledged Dr. Sikiru as the most senior and Fuji Creator. He didn't say it directly but with his body language. Let us all forget about Fuja version - Ote ni ye. Please note, no one can distort the history now, no matter how someone tries. It is in the world record such as GOOGLE, Web, etc that Dr. Sikiru Ayinde was the Fuji Creator. Even Mr. Fuja also confirmed this in his 1981/82 record. Barry ni Fuji Prophet / Fuji Creator...
