I'm speechless. Really unbelievable to find this concert and especially this Bhairavi Ragini! I was among the audience and witnessing Ali Akbar Kan's playing that night was an unforgettable, profound and soultouching musical experience! 28yrs have passed and when hearing it again I'm astonished by how well my memory kept atmosphere and sections of it all this time, esp. the final 20 mins! This is an absolute highlight in my career of listening! A priceless upload! Like a dream coming true. THX!

I was here, in the Moses and Aaron Kerk in the Waterloo Plein in Amsterdam! One of the most amazing concerts I've ever been to and where I had a true rasa experience. I'm blown away to find it here! I was in the mood for Khan Sahib so I googled it and here this amazing historic concert pops up! I knew Huib Schippers had recorded it, but I didn't know what happened to the recording!

This raga is actualy MISHRA Bhairavi. It means that player uses not only notes from bhairavi scale, but he can play every note in chromatic scale (all 12 notes). But the main tune / theme / mood remains bhairaivi.

Hi there.Actually, you can use all the notes that arent "officially" used in bhairabi..like suddha re..tibro ma..shudhho ni..suddho dha..if you have that expertise. And,Its Ali Akbar Khan we are talking about.Ustad Nikhil Banerjee learnt at his feet.If you havent heard of him..plz try his bhairabi.its here in youtube.Maybe then you'll get an idea about what we mean by Ali Akbar Khan..:)

Ali Akbar's music often seems to start slowly slowly, like a dream, and builds to a frenzy. At 5 am every morning I start yoga practice with him. It suits my state of mind, my conscious awareness is still dreamy, slow and unfocused.

There has been no one so far who has created the Bhairavi vibrations with such finesse. Amongst the Bengal's musical prodigies, a galaxy of innumerable world renowned greats truly Ali Akbar Khan's this rendition is outstanding. One should listen to this on a hill top on a full moon night to perceive its divine qualities.

I'm what one would call a complete classical-music deaf person: in most classical performances I've tried to listen to, the initial alap always has me fidgeting because I "don't understand what they're trying to do"....but hoo boy, this piece dragged me head from the first second itself. I am sure somebody who knows the technicalities of what is being played will derive so much for pleasure from this than I ever can, but even at the most base level of "liking what I'm hearing", this is stunning

Overwhelmed. Listening this rendition is like passing through dream, snatches of different ragas mixing with 'bajuband...' and how they are not discordant but becoming baroque, homogenous, I am failing to understand. This is not a Mishra or Ragamala. Seems the whole grammar of ragas are being re-written or may be I am thoroughly confused. Like some unknown addiction, may be LSD! Peculiar intoxication. i can only see the inscrutable smile of this Godplayer. From 44:25, starts return of the prodigal son, that also by a new route, incredible!!!

Richard Hayes No, sadly enough. The recording was made non-commercially using a reel to reel (Do you know what that was??) and a small number of cassettes were made for private use. I myself had one, but somehow it went missing. Sorry to disappoint. There were many many brilliant concerts in Amsterdam between 1975 and around 1989, but none were released commercially. I'm talking Nikhil Bannerjee, Ram Narayan, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Zakir Hussein, Pandit Jasraj, Latif Ahmed Khan, Durga Lal, Shiv Kumar Sharma.....etc. etc. Perhaps the OP has more he/she would like to put up?? It was a golden time for Indian Classical in the Netherlands.
