Basant Mukhari has been played/sung in many different ways. I have heard the Bhairavi ang, and there is a recital in Bibhas ang by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasiya on flute on youtube, but it is the Jogiya ang rendition that has impressed me the most. I also strongly recommend all to listen to Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande's treatment of this raga. It is completely mesmerising.

It is odd in that different artists use ga stongly, and some Ma (vadi) others Dha Kommal and of course play safe with Sa or Pa. This is a mixture of Bhairav and Bhairavi.

@@clemalford9768 We find it odd, because now we are used to codified versions of ragas. Music did not develop like that. Ragas had a common base, but developed differently in different gharanas or different places. For example, we are generally told that we cannot have the sequence Sa-Ga-Ma in raga Kedar, but I have heard Smt. Kishori Amonkar use that sequence. Similarly some singers use Pancham very rarely in Bageshri, but some use it quite frequently(please listen to Bageshri by Kumar Gandharva)

@@psuhaskhan Yes you are right. There were very many diverse versions of Ragas in past times due to the distances of gharanas and pre gharana. I think what has happened is that modes of communications changed a lot of that. Added to that each claimed their versions of a Raga were the correct ones. I remember personally seeing these scenarios in India in the 1960s. I have some books from over a hundred years ago that even show different Raga material than what is played today. Then you have the 'star' effect. Big successful names also expecting their students to emulate their style only and that so contributed to standardisation of Raga material. Look at some who follow the Vilayat Khan sitar style. The followers even have a tassel on the empty second string and adopt the Ustad's mannerisms! Of course there will be elements of the Guru's influence but encouragement to develop ones own musical fingerprint isn't encouraged much. It is an interesting topic for discussion Regards.

@@clemalford9768 I think the Indian system of teaching discourages innovation more because traditionally it has been believed that to reach an acceptable level for public performance, a disciple needs to spend decades in learning the existing music, and innovation during this period will hamper his learning. However, as far as I know, once the disciple is on his own, there is nothing to prevent him from innovating. In fact the artists who have received the highest acclaim are those who came out of the shadows of their masters and developed their own styles. Regards

@@psuhaskhan Yes very true what you say and was fine for the days where that was possible and having the means to do so. I attended a very interesting seminar in 1984 in Burdwan in West Bengal on a keynote paper given by Smt Jayasri Banerjee on the Methodology of Teaching Indian Classical Music held under the auspices of the Indian Music Congress. I believe The Sangeet Nayak Acadamy has a copy of it. Several Musicians and Musicologists from all over India attended and it was certainly thought-provoking. On your point, Ali Akbar Khan is a good example of surpassing his father on Sarod. What I find interesting about different musical fingerprints though is Ali Akbar's father and Amjad Ali Khan's father, Hafaz Ali Khan had the same Ustad, Wazir Khan but developed totally identifiably different styles of playing. Yet the same teacher. That's really how it should be otherwise all you have is good clones and no variety. A bit like forgery!! And that is criminal ......literally!!

HOW WONDERFUL. BASANTA MUKHAARI IS A PERENNIALLY BEAUTIFUL SAMPOORNA-SAMPOORNA RAGA OF THE MELAKARTA VAKULAABHARANAM (KARNAATAKA: KOMAL RE,KOMAL-DHA; KOMAL NI; SHUDDHA GA AND SHUDDHA MA); BUT A MODERN CANONOCAL JOGIYAA( BHIMSEN JODHI, FOR EXAMPLE) IS PENTATONIC IN AAROHA; AND USES SHUDDHA-NI). THISPIECE, THUS, IS AN ORIGINAL COMPOSITION ON A SUBTLE VARIATION ON A THEME OF BASANTA MUKHAARI. .

The "JOGIYA" concept is enmeshed in the environment The MAESTRO was born to. And to transform that feelings through some HIGH PITCHED INSTRUMENT as the SAROD itself and still be able to retain the MAJESTY of all via this RAGA spells wonder. It reminds one the RICH LEGACY as well as the EARNESTNESS of DISCIPLINE imbibed! "BABA" could only have done that and who else??

I think too much analysis kills the very purpose if music. Ultimately the personality n nuances of a raga are expressed as the personality of the artist is.
