Let me get this straight. - He leaves the band after dispute over royalties and is replaced by his older brother Duncan. - Finds that starting a solo career isn't working out since people expect him to sing UB40 songs. - Getting the hint on that's where the money is, decides to hook up with Astro and Mickey Virtu to start a new band and name it "UB40 featuring..." - Is rather surprised that the original band, which he left, are very cross about him using the band name, which he doesn't legally own. - All the while proclaiming that he IS the voice people expect to hear when they come to see UB40 live. Why didn't he go "Lads, this is stupid, Duncan can't do this, let's just bury the past and let me rejoin you."

One of the most unpleasant aspects of plugging an album is having to do interviews on morning TV shows with ghastly presenters asking mindless questions. Guess when Ali is sipping a drink by the side of a pool with blue skies overhead he will think its a price worth paying. Loved UB40 in the early 80s . The current Ali Campbell version of UB40 is nothing more than a karaoke show. Something you might expect to see at Butlins. It always gets tired and sad in the end.

I was born and raised in Brum till I was 16. Grew up loving reggae music and in particular UB40. Got to see them at the NEC back in the late 90’s having moved back to Brum for a bit having moved to Devon. I got to say how disappointed I was. Ali sounded awful and the band overall were terrible. I believe Ali was having issue with drink and drugs at the time. Apart from that though I loved their early stuff and I believe Signing Off is the best album they ever did. Their first and best. After promises & Lies album I gradually gave up on them. Now I don’t listen to any of their stuff and wouldn’t entertain any of the new stuff from either camp of the ub40 brand!
