No. It's the phonetic spelling of the store's Chinese name "盒马"."盒" means "box","马" means "horse". The name is probably derived from the fact that the stores are built upon the concept of the robotic box delivery system. Also, “盒马” sounds the same as "hippopotamus" in Chinese. That's why their store mascot is a hippo.

But you know the fact, They tried to make it as "futuristic" as they can, but in fact, there is nothing new in this concept. The first conveyor belt sushi “sushi train" restaurant was opened back in 1958. It wasn't just the way of serving food but also the idea came with a smart ordering and billing system. Not going to dig into the history, but ticket food ordering machine and vending machine ordering were used by all the ramen shops in Japan back in the 80s. Now, What's new about this store? The exact same concept of the sushi train with a different looking container "robot"? E-ink display price tag? I first saw it in my local grocery store nearly 10 years ago. Self checks out service??? Why this is not anything "futuristic" not because it's in China, but because it has nothing innovative. People are not blind, and we have memories. Why do you think you can just adopt other people's ideas just adding a little twist and call yourself an innovative? Make some real shit.
