I like how Arisu's brother literally gave the answer, that Arisu was taken to the borderlands (limbo/purgatory).So those who have the strongest will to survive during the games in the borderland are the 1s who made it back alive with the exception of Ann, as it seems like when kuina held her hand that made her going back alive possible. This series is easily one of the best for me even beating some american series and korean series I watched. I never thought I would like a J-drama/live action as personally I prefer them doing animes, but Japan is stepping up with their dramas lately with the likes of first love, gannibal and this! 💜

Arisu's entire M.O. was to get through the games to find out the purpose behind them, which is why Mira's psychiatric ward scene is so well written that I have to talk about it. His character development is the very reason why it worked on him at all. (which is why for the record it would've been very out of character for Arisu to stop her from talking. And besides, they can't kill her but they also can't finish the croquet game unless she's also playing, so it made perfect sense they didn't break her limbs or otherwise finish the game until the end. The fact that Mira gaslights you like that is only secondary, the real reason why it is a Hearts game is that you have to convince her that you have a strong enough will to live that you deserve to win, which is what Usagi does.) We never even confirm he drank the tea here, it's likely that in the show that was the pills and water she tried to give him in the illusion. (because Alice in Wonderland symbolism and all that) The only thing Mira ever lied about was the scenario. Every word out of her mouth or Arisu's father's or anyone else in the illusion was completely true. Arisu needed a way to justify that he was alive, while Chota and Karube were not, for him to go on. But as Kyuma, the Queen of Spades, Kuzuryu, Mira, Usagi, and more people say, there is no reason. The bonds and the joy we can find while searching for that non-existant answer are what really matter. You don't need a justification to be alive. All of the face card leaders had stopped searching for different reasons, even Mira, and that's why their lives had grown stagnant and flawed enough to accept residency, despite all being sympathetic people. "Life is just a game we play together. You should try to enjoy it," isn't ominous at all, it's sad and sympathetic and the whole point and message of the show. That's why after Usagi's declaration of love moves Mira and finally makes her feel a spark of desire again, that her and Arisu actually give the game of croquet an honest try and really get invested in winning despite the fact that the Queen of Hearts is won by Arisu either way. So with all of that I can't really understand any reaction other than sympathy to both Arisu and Mira in this episode. This message about the purpose of being alive is also why it's so incredibly good that they had the balls to make a cohesive and straightforward ending that only reveals that the borderlands were Purgatory, but never actually tells the audience the true function or purpose of the Borderlands, because we were just as gung-ho for answers as Arisu even though we shouldn't be and don't need to. The ones that matter are either answered or something we just as well could decide for ourselves. And it's even made extremely clear that it wasn't for nothing, it did really happen and the results of the games not only decided who came back to life, but also had an impact on everyone's growth as a person. As well as the fact that some bonds really can be immutable, like romantic or parental love as seen with Arisu and Usagi, and Aguni and Akane, which is true. Sure there are a few more details in the manga, but not enough to change my points. And besides, maybe they'll use those details for the Joker card in a future special if they really want to, since the manga ends here but there's a sequel that's only one volume long. It would make a lot more sense to end with this, but it's not impossible they film a little bit more. I just pray they don't start explaining more details about the Borderlands like the manga did because that would defeat the point of the story, especially when we just got the most perfect ending I've seen in a loooong time.

IMO, the King of Spades wasn't saying sorry to Aguni or the other players. He was talking to his dead friend, apologizing that the only way to save his friend from pain was to end it swiftly. And from that was born the idea that his executions as the King of Spades was one of mercy.

technically it wasn't in their minds, it was a shared experience in a limbo/purgatory (border between life and death), where the joker helps them cross over/return using the games as a test since he thought the meteorite was an unfair event that injured so many people at once, so their injuries in the game didn't matter too much

Borderland is the purgatory / the world between dead and life. The people who died in the games, died in real life. In borderland they have the 2nd chance to live if they win all the games.
@rdpaik
Жыл бұрын
What doesn’t make sense is how your 2nd chance is dependent on others completing the game. If Arisu gave up to the Queen of Hearts, then all his injured friends die purgatory too. By him winning, everyone in purgatory gets to choose to live or stay (permanent residency), so they all recover in the real world at the same time ? I know it’s nitpicking and I still enjoyed the show as is, but as an explanation of a purgatory with games to determine your 2nd chance, it would’ve made more sense if everyone had to complete their own game or own deck of cards.

Borderland is Limbo/Prugatory. The ones that accepted residency basically became the new Kings/Queens/Jacks. The previous set of Kings, Queens, Jacks were the ones who won and decided to take resicency. They were also victims of a huge scale incident.

In the manga the Joker actually teleport to the table after Queen of Hearts and make a single question to Arisu about 2 concepts, God and Devil, and which one he most resembles. Arisu answers neither, only a soul intermediador like Charon in greek mythology, then Joker leave. And thats why "border between life and death" is the most basic answers out there, because that is what Arisu understood. But its quite shitty or way too light regarding the terror and how Borderland's system works to allow you to leave imo. "Yea yea, let me just take this children that dont even know whats going on to get shot in the head by lasers or the King of Spades, yea yea but i'm not evil, i'm just the intermediator 🤡" But I loved that ending, both in the show and in the manga.

@@GinnySiska If there isn't enough material left for an entire season, I wouldn't want them to attempt said third season, out of fear that it'd feel like when they stretched The Hobbit into a Lord of the Rings-length trilogy. That said, I wouldn't mind some kind of Firefly-style arrangement with a movie, or a half-season. Even if they don't though, and Netflix goes and cancels yet another gem, this is one of the few times where it would feel like the writers got the chance to tell the story they wanted to tell. Unlike so many other one- or two-season Netflix shows, it doesn't feel like the writers accidentally hit 'send' halfway through writing that season's arc and the company just went ahead with that.
