According to guitarist, Jerry Cantrell said, "The song is us against the world, those people who put you down: “I put up with many years of you putting us down and watching us bleed, now I’d like to see you bleed some back." The first line - "my cup runneth over" - is a reference to the Book of Psalms. It means that he has more than he needs, he is doing great. The second line - "like blood from a stone" - means the exact opposite. Jerry is telling us in a sarcastic fashion that no, he’s not doing great. He’s also setting up the slew of religious metaphors to come in the song. The lines: "When the sin lies bolder / I'll pluck out thine eye". This is a Biblical reference to the passage of Mathew 18:9 which reads: "Also, if your eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter one-eyed into life than to be thrown with two eyes into the fiery Ge·henʹna". Although this seems to be a sincere expression of guilt, when taken into context Jerry seems to be sarcastically mocking society’s moral standards, in particular those set out in the Bible. The spoken whispered verse is: "All these things that you've done for me / Have left me so FUCKING TIRED / I'm not saying that you haven't done a lot of good / But if there's one thing you can do / You can BLEED FOR ME, BLEED FOR ME" The live black and white version of BLEED THE FREAK is from their Live Facelift VHS. Live Facelift is a concert video and live album originally released on VHS on July 30, 1991, containing live footage of songs: MAN IN THE BOX, REAL THING, LOVE, HATE, LOVE (which is UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION played live by a rock band, all other rock bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect), SEA OF SORROW, and BLEED THE FREAK from their debut album, Facelift, recorded at The Moore Theater in Seattle on December 22, 1990. The VHS also includes official videos for WE DIE YOUNG, MAN IN THE BOX, and SEA OF SORROW. The video has been certified gold by the RIAA with excess sales of 50,000 copies. It's a very rare VHS, that last I checked cost 75.00USD. At the age of 34, Layne looked more like an 80 year old man. He knew he screwed up, between the drugs and his own depression and then his former fiancee dying, Layne just couldn't find a way to dig himself out of his own mess and at the end with his teeth problems and organs failing on him, he gave up trying. He lost sight of who his true friends were and who was using him. He was never going to give up the drugs. Instead, he tried to attain the same high he felt the first time he did drugs and could never achieve it. Other musicians tried to spark a creative flair hoping if Layne was creative he wouldn't want the drugs, but it only worked for as long as it took to complete the project and he'd close down again. Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life. Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew enough to know that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. Layne had done so much for Jerry, giving him a place to live, money, clothes, food, guitars and gear, a band. Layne gave Jerry a life that could NOT fail unless Jerry let it happen. Layne stacked his own vocals. He wrote the lyrics for the songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He still was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons.

Honest I spent about five minutes trying to figure out if these guys are brothers or not. They could be, or could not be in equal measure. My favorite part is when he gets to the end of the slow breakdown, leans back and delivers the "bleed the freeeak..."
