Darrin Connor well here is my story, i saw ozzy with rhoads in august 1981 with def leppard opening, then in january 1982 i bought tickets for ozzy to see him in two different cities, my shows were scheduled for april 2, and april 7 i believe. as we all know randy died march 19,1982, the shows i saw went on as planned with bernie torme on guitar who was a great guitar player no one knew about but. he had his own band in england called bernie torme and the electric gypsies, i had a import single of his band, thats how i knew about him before i saw him, for what its worth he looked like randy. so to answer your question over the mountain was the first song they played on my april 1982 shows after opening with the intro to diary of a madman song. rhoads solo was always after suicide solution, then would play iron man and children of the grave and finish with paranoid on my 1981 gig, i loved the way he played children of the grave adding some of his own guitar style on that sabbath song. then i saw ozzy six more times after those shows in the years to come.

Yeah the beginning man, that was great shit there! That’s what a lot of so-so AIC fans didn’t know about ‘em. Even though their music had that cool evil type sound to it and most of the lyrics made ‘em sound just the opposite of what the guys were like. That being a bunch of guys who loved to joke around and act goofy as hell whenever they’d have the chance. God, I so badly AIC from the whole Layne era! Hell, not just them but the whole entire 1st half of the 90’s rock. All of the music that came out then during the so-called ‘grunge/alternative rock movement’. At least what Mtv and the rest of the media and journalism loved to call it. Would give anything to go back and make the drive out to any/all cities in my region of the states & try to go to every single show of all the greats who played whatever shows. Such as Nirvana, PJ, AIC, STP, Pumpkins and many many others that ruled the airwaves back in those days. I swear the only thing I consider really good to listen to nowadays that I feel are great bands are well still PJam and Queens of the Stone Age, Deftones, Royal Blood to name a few off the top of my head. But nowhere near the same as it was back in the early 90’s. That was a great time for rock no doubt!

Stop the fucking whining about Alice isn't that, Alice isn't this! The ultimate truth is Alice in Chains is NOT 'grunge'. 'Grunge' was a stupid annoying catchphrase invented by then media and record labels especially Sub Pop. AiC just got pigeonholed as they were from Seattle. Alice in Chains started as a hair metal outfit but they quickly evolved into a more Black Sabbath inspired darker and dense sounding heavy metal band. They had the speed metal influences on Facelift e.g. We Die Young, Put You Down etc. But they slowed down on Dirt. Took more Sabbathy route. And finally on the self-titled record they went almost doom metal. Now they're back with their sludgy doomy rock/metal and doing pretty much fine without Layne who obviously irreplaceable but DuVall has found a chemistry with Cantrell and they're doing really good imho.

I don't know what it was like back then but I bet you if you did a survey of metal fans and asked them what their favourite grunge band is, AIC would win by a landslide nowadays.

+Merle Langlois Yes you are absolutely correct about that. I was a metal head back then into deicide cannibal corpse anything heavy. I did not like grunge back then except for two bands....Kings x and Alice n chains

bangasou12 First five albums to start with and give please come home Mr bulbous a spin for more modern day Kings x also ear candy for a nice mellow trip. They are kind of like a happier version of Alice n chains though they can be moody and dark just listen to the songs world around me and juniors gone wild. I would recommend for first listen Kings x self titled album which is their fourth album. I have heard a little Melvins though not much I need to give them a listen again have not really given them a good go.Hope you enjoy Kings x Cheers.

This was Layne at his absolute peak. His voice is perfect here, before Heroin and his lifestyle pretty much ravaged his voice and body. Makes me sad every time I think about it. Imagine newer songs like Hollow or Stone with Layne's voice.

Layne was already a junkie by this time. I also disagree with your assessment, I think his vocals kept improving and by 1993 his voice was better than ever. He had less grit and screaming as a stylistic choice and found a deeper register and more melody and creativity. By Mad Season in 94 or 95 he reached another level of sense of melody and harmony. He was incredible. But by their self titled album began a decline. It wasn’t the heroin that ravaged his voice, it was the crack. He was in a routine of constant hits of crack and heroin throughout the day. That’s when he lost energy and soon after his voice.

His voice was always in it's prime but sadly he just stopped singing because of his heavy addiction :(

I was there in Miami. I'd seen the show in Costa Mesa, California about a month prior. (Off topic) During the Miami show, I was hanging out in the hallway during Alice's set because I wasn't a fan. This young girl kept walking by me checking me out, but I didn't say anything because she looked too young, she looked about 12 and wearing a Mickey mouse shirt. Afetr passing me about 4 times, she walks right up to me and starts asking if I know so-and-so, and I told her I didn't. Then she asks why I'm in the hallway and not watching the show, and I told her because I don't like Alice, she says "that's the only band I came to see". Then she asks if I'd like to watch the rest of the show with her. I asked how old she was, she replied 17 (I was 16 at the time). She was very beautiful actually, just young looking, petite Latina from Nicaragua named Cyndi V (Cynthia). We ended up hanging out quite a bit after that, she moved in with me for a few months. We were in love. Then it ended. We reunited for a bit, then lost contact. Haven't heard from her since. I miss her.

I can easily see Layne as a proper metal singer! That being said, not a lot of metal singers can do his voice justice (e.g. Corey Taylor, dont get me wrong I love Corey but Layne is just superior).

Im telling you rite now Mustaine, Kerry, Scott(NOT) all those guys had to have gotten chills up there spine the 1st time they heard Layne sing Would? This is incredible. I wish they had the outdoor footage from this tour. Seans drums are pounding. Just think how hard the guys had to work to get a thrash audiences respect. We all know we are not easy to please. And we dont like change (at least back then we didnt, especially in our music)

I was at this show and remember this bootleg going around. I have the Megadeth and Slayer sets This was the last show of the tour. The men in the box jumping around is Slayer. While Slayer plays Angel of Death a large fish is dropped from the rafters in front of Tom Araya. (good story behind that one) Flower was dumped on Anthrax by Megadeth and I believe that Anthrax peed on Megadeth from the rafters. It was a great and memorable evening for sure.

Why to pay expensive choreographers and train a team of dancers when you have a lot of roadies and friends to join the stage with paperboard boxes in the head? :)
