yeah especially when he tries to let people know that there's fire in his eyes poor guy no one tried to put the fire out :( every time he screamed it his pal jerry would just talk about sewing them shut then he'd scream "Jesus Christ" then jerry would say "deny your maker" and I just think that's a little over board with the whole religious thing I mean Layne was just in pain I'd start screaming my makers name too if I had fire in my eyes :\

Gonz Wouldgo 100% true. His system was so fried that he couldn’t put as much power and grit into his vocals. I don’t know if you’ve seen the video of Man in The Box during Layne’s last show, but he couldn’t even reach the regular pitch of the song. He had to sing it in a lower octave... it’s so sad to watch because everyone knows that he was putting every ounce of effort he had, even tho he was sick to death....
@nkw1985

Brandooch 11 - I noticed that too. In MTV Unplugged he still sounded great but you could tell he was weak and the heroin was taking it's toll. He struggled mightily the last performance. He would have admitted that. He's my favorite singer by far ever. But he did lose the ability to draw the power he was so widely known for late in his career. He's is still my all time favorite vocalist ever though. What an amazing voice.

I listened to that interview where Jerry compared the replacement of Layne with William Duvall, to the AC/DC replacement of Bon Scott with Brian Johnson. As much as I love Jerry I would say that certainly isn’t the case with AIC. Layne could blow down walls with both his voice and presence, whereas DuVall is nasally and really really irritating. A more fitting comparison would be Mercury replaced by Lambert. And even that is generous.

Gonz Wouldgo I definitely agree. It must be heartbreaking when Jerry Cantrell forgets and looks over expecting to see his best friend Layne and it is Duvall. There really is a difference between hitting a note and hitting a note from your own voice. The covers people do, there either trying to mimic Laynes personal voice or they use their own but it’s just not and will never sound as good as Layne. Haha they would literally had to have been born with Laynes voice instead of their own
@Donesy32
11 жыл бұрын
No doubt he could hit the high notes, but not like he could when they recorded the song. That's why they changed the volcanoes in the chorus that way he wouldn't blow his voice out. Even in this video he's having a hard time. Earlier he'd be able to articulate his words, in this video he's just yelling.
@recien2254
6 жыл бұрын
Justin Dones you call 1:18 not articulating your voice??????!!! He didn’t even sound that good while recording the song!!!! In the song at this same point it sounds a little similar to the Album version but Laynes continues to articulate his voice at other points in the song where he didn’t in the original recorded album version.

there is some truth to what you are saying.but i think its more from the drug use then layne's lack of will.its the drugs that killed him and even stole some not of of his talent.90-91 he was in his prime and the drugs did not destroy him yet,by 96-97 they eat him up.
@Donesy32

I think this is where his voice started to really change to more of the tripod voice. Damn shame he couldn't hit those high notes, but he still hits the notes better than Duvall's crackly, nasally singing voice.

I think in 90 and 91 Layne did better. might be BC the new record face lift just came out...so they was getting known. and he wanted to do his best. over the years i saw alot of Layne live. and i think he got more laid back with it. pretty much use to it. knowing he didnt have to proof himself to anyone. since AIC was already well known. thus...making a sloppy show.....just my thoughts tho. watch him live in 91 black and white video. it was soooo good!
