This win always annoys me, not because Vikander isn't talented, far from it. The reason is that she is in no way supporting in The Danish Girl. She should of been nominated in this category for Ex Machina and then in leading for The Danish Girl instead of Jennifer Lawrence. BAFTA and Golden Globes got it right by putting her in leading. It has nothing to do with the Oscars per se. The blame lies with the studio who funded the film as they submit the actors/actresses into whichever category they feel they will most likely gain enough recognition to receive a nomination. I also think Vikander in The Danish Girl should have been submitted in the lead actress category but it wasn't to be. Rooney Mara should have been submitted in lead as well, but the studio didn't want her and Cate Blanchett to go against each other for Carol.

I watched all five films and they're all great, I think. J.J. Leigh had a fantastic end, she dominated the last half hour. (Underrated) Rachel McAdams was with an amazing modesty, very convincing. Kate Winslet had sweet minutes, but in my opinion, she was often better than in this role (although the film steve jobs is underrated as well). Alicia Vikander was good - she had nuanced eyes, you know? But I don't believe it was the best performance that year. Carol is one of my favorites of all time, should have won best picture. Deep, touching directing (remember the scene where Rooney takes a photo of Cate buying a christmas tree. Remember the driving scene. Remember the honest sex scene. Remember the last minutes. I could go on...) Overwhelming soundtrack. Astonishing acting - and to be honest, I think Rooney Mara deserved it so damn well. She's many things at the same time playing her role - but at first, she's acting true. Great.

I agree, and she totally should have won. Her or Jennifer Jason Leigh, although if I had it my way Rooney Mara would have won lead actress and JJL would have won supporting

I was seriously rooting for Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs. My favourite performance of them all was Rooney Mara for Carol (one of my favourites perfomances of the year, maybe my favourite) but the category fraud this year was way to much. There's no way Alicia Vikander or Rooney Mara can be considered as supporting have the same amount of screen time and the character developing as her partners in the film (and actually Alicia had more screen time than Eddie Redmayne had in The Danish Girl). Kate Winslet was a real supporting actress, it's just not fair, and it doesn't feel fair they were nominated in that category considering the amount of supporting performances that could had been nominated instead of them two (Jane Fonda for Youth, Joan Allen for Room, Elizabeth Banks for Love&Mercy).
