There is a bit of setup for Andy saying the Bitch line. Bjorn calls him a bitch multiple times throughout the start of the film, and he hears Rain call Rook bitch as well. So, there is some context. I am not defending the line completely, I also think it is pretty on the nose, but I thought it was worth noting.

Thank you! Definitely a poor choice of line, but it definitely IS set up. It's honestly got nearly as much setup as the baby.

The "aim assist" gun is probably a nod to the "Smart" gun we see in Aliens used by Vasquez and Drake. Aliens does not explain it though. But there are several Alien and Alien VS Predator games with that "Smart" gun and it totally searches for targets when the player uses it. It's awesome to use 😀

Bishop was reanimated in Alien 3 and that went off just fine as animatronics. They could've gone down that route with Rook too.

Nice to see a relatively positive review of this film on youtube! Alien: Romulus may be the best looking film of the year. Dune 2 is probably the closest to it but I was in awe at more than a few spots.

I am thrilled that someone else enjoyed the idea of “AI” being used to bring to life a character who was AI. The effect was a bit off, but I loved seeing a version of the Ash character meddling again.

about those "old truckers", Ripley and Lambert where only like 25 in Alien 🙂 I did not have problem with the young cast. I admit before I watched the film I worried that I would have an issue with these young people being annoying to me. But no, they did fine. Also let's not forget the actor playing Andy. Great performance playing an Android in different "states".

David Jonsson (Andy) was the standout in a very good cast. Look for him in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King's THE LONG WALK, and Isabelle Mercad is going to be in the SUPERMAN film written and directed by James Gunn.

about the Deepfake Ian Holm. Sure it was not the best digital actor we have seen but consider the budget of Romulus. 80 million dollars. That's way below the budget of a Star Wars or Marvel movie or Indiana Jones movie. So I give it a pass. I guess they could have made life easier for themselves had the they chosen to make Rook's face 50% destroyed but they did not. I really like this movie. So many things in it I like. the SetDec is amazing! and so are the creatures. Romulus is now in my top 3 of the Alien series along with Alien and Aliens.

And also, they got permission from Ian Holm's widow and family before the film started shooting. If they got their okay, then that's it. People can hate it all they want, but the family gave their blessings, and to me that is what counts.

I always appreciate your opinions; Y’all are always concise and articulate with your observations, but I mostly disagree with your views on Alien:Romulus. Technically impressive but ultimately a greatest hits of the franchise which dragged the movie down. I didn’t see the references as winks. David Jonsson was very impressive though. Maybe the best character since Aliens.

I think the people that love this, dont really care for the integrity of Ripleys 3 movie timeline. This story would grate on them otherwise, but its never mentioned by the positive reviews. You really have to explain how this lines up with Aliens in one movie. Even if a very unsatisfactory nod or people that experienced them as a story will be turned off. Many now go back and experience all the films out of order. Ripley is a marvel character of sorts.

I can't believe even Dave the hater liked this that much. Compared to RLM review this one is surprisingly forgiving. Jeff goes: "It's like a benefit almost bcs it makes that character kinda odd" regarding the bad cgi moment. seriously?? lol

I'm a huge, long-time fan of the franchise I've come to realize, this wasn't made for me. I didn't care for most of the cast, but I can get past that, What bothered me most was the beat down of fan service. I was so frustrated by the end of this movie. From the uncanny valley CGI bringing back a dead actor, the out of character lines that were shoe-horned from previous films, to recycling the climax of Resurrection with the New Born (which I have hated for 26 years)...The constant recycling all pulled me out of this story. I was just depressed by the end of this, with the thought that all we have left is to recycle even the bad ideas. But again, this wasn't for me, the person that would feel this as an unabashed, unoriginal retread. It was an effort by Fede Alvarez, Ridley Scott, and Disney, using a Gen Z cast, to keep the property and all of the older movies, alive. The original movies...good or bad..were always a way to launch new, innovative film-makers. This was just an attempt to make sure the money printers don't stall. I would have completely enjoyed simply a well-done, stand-alone movie, that had compelling, well-developed characters, set against the backdrop of the Alien horror aspects. No problem with that. It doesn't have to take the big swings that Prometheus did (which I liked) for long time fans to enjoy, as long as it is well done. I just don't want to feel pandered to.

"the guy that's kind of racist" lmao. Devindra can't help himself but bring that kind of crap into a review. The character's distrust of Andy has nothing to do with race. Distrust of Synthetics/Androids has long been a thematic element of the series...

Exactly. That’s a miss on him but if you have listened to these guys long enough, you’ll notice a pattern of his hardcore feminism. 90% of every review he wants the woman “to do more”.

"racist but against androids" is what I feel like Devindra was trying to say, and yes that is the only characterization the Very English Bloke is given. They go out of their way to drive home how he Doesn't Like Androids because Androids Killed His Mother and that's all the audience has to go on for him. Androids have for sure been present in the movies but I don't know if distrust of them is the theme. Ripley and the others dislike Ash not because he's an android but because he makes questionable decisions (from their perspective) that risk their lives. Ripley carries that over into her relationship with Bishop but Bishop gives the audience the purest altruistic android performance of the series. Call in Ressurection is kind of a non entity aside from the suggestions that she is more "humane" because she isn't human, so again altruistic android. Scott went really wild with David to be sure, but he also put in Walter who is an absolute good boy. I would say at best it's an even split between whether artificial intelligence is good or bad in Alien movies.

@@redundantbadger I agree. For me, it seems he's been like that towards Andy even before his mom was killed. So... he's racist against a group and/or kind. It just happens to be against android and synthetics. He wasn't a total villain and I think he just needed to admit he's a lonely boy but he was a POS.
