@ThrakazogZ

Hicks was actually played by another actor, originally. That actor was caught doing drugs on the set, so they had to fire him. Cameron had worked with Biehn in Terminator, as you said, so he called to bring him in as a replacement. There are one or two group action scenes where you might see a marine you don't recognize from the group. That was the original Hicks. They couldn't afford to re-shoot the scenes, so he was left in.

Did either of you realize you were watching the Director's Cut? The most obvious difference is the restored "settlement" scene with Newt & family/Face-Hugger encounter. This important scene (to me) was passed around school halls, camp fires, etc. like FOLK LORE. I had to wait, like the rest, for it to be released over a decade later on VHS.
@PungiFungi
Күн бұрын
Unfortunately, this scene totally ruin the suspense and pacing of the original theatrical cut. You are now waiting for the marines and Ripley to play catch up, instead of being along with them for the ride. I remember the scenes where Ripley saw the facehuggers in the lab and the discovery of Newt solicited an audible reaction from the audience. Reactions that would have been diluted as there were too much reveal and foreshadowing in the restored colony scenes, as interesting to see as they would've been. More is not always better.

Also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, the late Bill Paxton. Who plays Private Hudson in this film, and Charlton Heston. Also, about the character Burke. In my mid 20's I watched the Aliens movie when it first came out in theaters in 1986. It became my favorite action/sci-fi movies. Around 2 years later I had since moved to the Denver area where one of the things to do for an adrenaline rush was to enter abandoned nuclear missile sites that anyone in our community had found entrance to (Friends or acquaintances of outdoor party goers, bored energetic teenagers, etc.). One weekend we planned a pre-midnight gathering of friends to first watch Aliens and then enter a newly discovered tunnel entrance. Many of the tunnel sections are as they are in the movie, with grated walkways and ceilings, conduit, pipes and infinitely dark (No light whatsoever). It was crazy scary venturing down deep within the multiple leveled tunnel systems having watched this movie first...

I was 15 when this came out and absolutely loved it. Such an amazing film. James Cameron has made some great movies, but it his earlier films that came out in my teens and early twenties that are my favorite. The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, T-2. I love those movies. And Titanic is amazing. I have always been quite taken with the story of Titanic, especially after having served in the U.S. Navy and learned much about ships. I still miss being out in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight. At night, when the skies are clear, the view is breathtaking. Back to Aliens, I love the characters, the music composed by the late James Horner(who also did Titanic). After Ripley and Newt, Corporal Hicks is my favorite character. He had a level head and I loved how he was on Ripley's side from the start. Vasquez was a real badass. Jenette Goldstein, who played Vasquez, was also in T-2 and Titanic. In Titanic, she played an Irish woman with two children riding in steerage. And the late Bill Paxton as Hudson was great. The day Bill Paxton died was a sad day. He was an awesome actor. He had a lot of roles in movies that came out during my early teens.

My brother is such a big believer in this he even got me singing if I am very ill. When I sing now, my brother always asks what's wrong, but sometimes I am just singing to pass the time. Dead right on the Directors cut of the film. Giving Ripley a lost daughter made her interaction with Newt more meaningful and touching. Seeing some people on that base before the aliens arrived made the fact that it has gone silent all the more scary. Just a few short scenes to add so much to a movie. I don't know why they were ever cut. A bit of a word of warning re: Aliens 3. If you enjoyed the first two films don't watch the ones that follow. Or if you are really wanting to give yourself a bit of time before doing so. Just my two cents. People watch movies in different ways for different reasons, so your mileage may vary. As for your question in the first movie regarding the sequels, here's a bit of information: - Alien - Aliens (sequel to Alien, often considered just as good/better as the original) - Alien 3 (sequel to Aliens, not so positively perceived, but it does a good job in wrapping up the trilogy) - Alien: Ressurrection (sequel to Alien 3, but more of a fanfiction movie than an alien movie. Still entertaining, but it feels like a different kind of movie than the first three) - Prometheus (prequel to Alien, delving more into the lore of the alien species) - Covenant (sequel to Prometheus) - Romulus (sequel to Covenant) The spider-things have been called "Facehuggers" by the way. They never call them that in the movies, but the fanbase does.

You should know this movie was filmed and produced in Pinewood Studios , UK with a mostly British production crew but obviously the director James Cameron and main cast were mostly American. Ripley's cubicle she lives in after her arrival to Earth , was an abandoned airliner in Heathrow. The terraforming station structure was the location of an abandoned electrical power station in Birmingham , I think where most of the indoor filming was done. Director James Cameron who is a perfectionist , was very hard on production and filming crew as well as cast and directors during filming.

Great reaction as always , love your reaction videos you are both so genuine ( Some reactors I am sure have already seen content and come across as quite false ) your jumps and reactions are so great , and hope you get better soon Steph. I really love this movie and as generally sequels are not as good as the first it is so refreshing that this breaks the mould , but like you said Liam Alien is still a great ground breaking slow burn atmospheric , tension filled horror whereas Aliens is a total change of pace and more of a war / action movie . Everything about Alien is done so well the cast is fantastic , Sigourney is as great as ever and she really sells the major PTSD Ripley must be suffering , all the Colonial Marines are great too their camaraderie and banter is so great and funny too " Hey Vasquez you ever been mistaken for a man " " No have you " 😅 , their look is great too apparently Cameron allowed them to decorate their armour and weapons with logos and designs to give them a more squad feel . The standouts for me has to be Hicks - the ever reliable Michael Biehn and a regular Cameron actor . The late great Bill Paxton as Hudson is great too who goes to pieces after the first encounter and gets so whiney but has some really memorable and quotable lines and of course Jeanette Goldstein as Vasquez who continues the tradition of bas ass action Girls ( I had a major crush on Vasquez when this came out , I must like the feisty ones ) Al Matthews as Apone is great too and was areal life Marine Sargent in Vietnam too , Paul Reiser as Burke is suitably shifty and slimy and Lance Henrikson is fantastic too love the subversion that this time the Synthetic , Sorry Artifical Person is a good guy ( And dont feel bad for mistrusting Bishop after Ash who can blame you ) Given that this was made in 1986 ( Saw this on the big screen in Central London great experience ) it still really stands up today the effects are very well done you really get a sense of how lethal the Xenomorphs are en masse , one was bad enough in Alien but a whole swarm - Jeez . They only had a budget to make a handful of Alien suits but thanks to clever lighting and editing they made it seem like there were a lot more , the Queen is an amazing design it was a full sized puppet and they made miniatures for the showdown with Ripley at the end but looks so good , the Queen is a great addition to the Aliens lifecycle and makes a lot of sense as I believe the Xenomorphs are based on an insect society with , warriors , drones , workers and a Queen like Bees or Ants . I read somewhere Ridley Scott did not like the Queen idea which is why it does not feature in the later instalments he directs but I love the concept . The weird walls the find in the atmosphere processor is meant to be a secretion that the Aliens use to build their nest or hive , the Facehuggers ( Spiders ) are truly awful and it is great to see them so mobile and more menacing . The version you watched is the Special Edition which differs from the Theatrical and VHS release with additional scenes reinserted , with Newts parents finding the derelict , Burke telling Ripley about her Daughter and all the sentry gun scenes plus a few more scenes here and there . The pacing and direction is fantastic , James Cameron really knows how to structure and pace his films so well even his earlier entries like Terminator are great for that too also love the little touches like Apone with his Cigar as soon as he wakes up and when the Dropship crashes and explodes you can hear a metal bar hitting the ground - great stuff . I hope you continue with the series , next up is Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection which whilst being good are not quite as good as the first two , then you get into the prequels directed by Ridley Scott - Prometheus and Alien Covenant which I really feel are very disappointing and then after that is the latest Alien Romulus which is set after Alien but before Aliens I have not seen this yet but have heard it is very good and a return to form . Really hope you also check out two more franchises Terminator and Predator as you loved Alien I think you will enjoy these too . 😁

Funny, I was also thinking about "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" when watching the reaction. Sorry but it’s actually the egg that comes first. If you’re going by evolution, every new generation changes and those changes come from each subsequent generation. THEY come from the eggs. The answer is simple to look at like this. Chickens are birds. Birds are dinosaurs. Dinosaurs laid eggs. Chickens didn’t exist during the time of the dinosaurs. Put 2 and 2 together. The egg comes first.
@rf3899

@lustrazor44 That's still just a theory. If you go back to the very first egg to ever exist from any species, then how exactly did that very first egg come into existence? I happen to believe in a more religious explanation. Over my 54 years on this earth, I've seen different scientific theories on evolution and other theories that were believed to be true at the time, only be disproved later on. I'm not saying you are 100% wrong or I'm 100% right, but there isn't 100% proof either way, and we are both entitled to our beliefs.

Also, glad you’ve watched both Alien movies now. Too bad there are no more movies in that franchise. 😜 Seriously, the rest are generally between meh (ok at best) and awful… I don’t recommend them, and I certainly wouldn’t watch them with high expectations… you should minimally wait awhile if you really feel compelled to watch any.

@@Reactsandgames I actually haven’t seen Romulus yet, so perhaps it’s good? 🤞. I haven’t gotten my hopes up in a while due to some of the other movies which I have seen, and that’s why I didn’t run out to see it. (Also not including the Alien vs Predator movies in this, which I feel are a largely different thing even if they are technically in the same canon.)

This is such a fantastic movie. I remember the first time I saw it, and I got blown completely away. It's been over thirty years, and I am STILL hyped when I see it, EVEN MORE so now that the standard version you get to watch is the extended edition. The original was good, the extended version is nothing short of awesome.

Aliens Special Edition is the epic rollercoaster of the franchise. No character in the Alien universe becomes as intricate part of the movie as Ellen Ripley in Aliens. People assume the whole franchise is about Ripley because of Aliens. That's because of James Camerons groundbreaking use of 3D storytelling. He brings his characters to life like to other character in any Alien film. The more you watch Aliens, the more you care about his characters. That's why I personally consider Aliens to be the greatest sci-fi monster movie ever made... or will ever be made.

It's great that you watched the Director's Cut. With Cameron, it's always the better version because the additional runtime is always important in his films. At the end, as they were leaving, the queen got caught on one leg of the landing gear, so they brought her with them. And I have to say, you are great as reactors, it's fun to watch you. Your reactions are natural, it's entertaining.

The Theatrical Cut removed much of the theme of this movie (motherhood, parenting) to get the runtime down to a more common runtime. They removed all scenes which mentioned Ripley having a daugher, they removed the scene of Hadley's Hope before they found the ship and removed the scene where Newt's family found the ship. They also removed the first-name-exchange between Ripley and Hicks, just like much of the character development. James Cameron wasn't happy with those decisions to cut those, because he feels the Special Edition is how the movie should be. *James Cameron* Well, James Cameron said he wanted to use those mechanical loaders (aka mechs) in more movies and Avatar allowed him to do so, since they gave him free reign. But yes, those were based off of the loaders from this movie. He also kept the themes from the first movie, like gaslighting women (nobody believed Ripley in the first movie, and he kept that intact for the sequel) and people with a hidden agenda, the same setup (after blowing up, the alien is still on the ship that got away from the explosion), and many more. He also subverted the android expectations, because he knew the audience would immediately distrust the new android, so he flipped it. And the audience is being kept on edge, because everyone's expecting him to turn bad eventually. It's a brilliant way to add another layer of tension. A little fun fact: whenever they're mentioning how long it takes before the place blows up, the movie takes _just_ as long in terms of runtime before it actually blows up. So you're literally experiencing the same time as Ripley. *Plot holes* As for the settlers on LV-426 not finding the alien ship in the past 57 years, that question's never answered in the movies. Ironically, the game _Alien: Isolation_ answers that question, since it fills in some of the blanks and fixes some plot holes between the first and second movie. *Gorman* When they were dropping from the big ship towards the surface, Vasquez asked Gorman how much experience he has. He told her he had experience in 38 missions in a simulator and just _one_ actual mission before this one. So he's pretty much a rookie officer who has never had to command an actual squad in a bad situation. That's why he only does things by the book, because he doesn't have the experience to think on the spot. *Game over* After the ship has crashed, around 28:00 , Hudson says "Game over, man. Game over." Back in the 80s, you didn't really have popular game consoles. The first NES with the first Super Mario came out in 1986 (the same year this movie came out), so most people's experience with games were in arcades. Those were usually populated with kids and teenagers, so the "Game over" phrase from Hudson went over the heads of many adults, who didn't have any experience with arcades. Nowadays we're all so familiar with games that we don't even realize this phrase was groundbreaking at the time.

@@Reactsandgames I've just left a comment re Alien 3. The two Ridley Scott Alien films made just several years ago are garbage. I don't know why given that that I watched Romulus, and also that I'd read pretty negative stuff about it, but I did. To be honest I was surprised, not that it was great or anything but just that it wasn't awful. If only they'd had the insight to not do the silly callbacks to the first two films it would have been more its own movie and much better. Using Ripley's famous line from Aliens was simply boneheaded and to a certain extent just makes it an 'imitation' vehicle. But given all of that it did surprise me and it was okay bordering on good. But we're still no closer to getting an Alien film that can stand along with the first two. Light years away from that.

Ripley is my favorite cinematic character ever. What probably not many people understand is that there was almost no female role models in the movies back in the seventies. At least it wasn't for being an action hero. Back then any woman that was the leader was either a b****, got it from nepotism or was crazy. Sadly that really hasn't changed a whole lot. Paging game of thrones. Or when she was leading she was acting like a man because they could not fathom that a woman could be a woman and still lead. That's why Ripley is so important because she is a woman she acts like a woman she has emotions she has fear, she just works through them and does what has to be done. That's what makes her such an important character in pop culture, to this day. As much as egomaniac as James Cameron is, he really knew how to write for a woman. I also loved how they had the final battle was between two mamas. Cuz there is nothing more vicious than a mother protecting her Young, I would put them against any man any day. I saw a hoodie I really want to get and on it it says Ripley and Hicks for president and vp, in that order. Below that it said its the only way to be sure. I'm planning on buying it on the 1st. Lol

It made no sense for Ripley to go down to the planet. She could have "advised" from orbit. And it made even less sense to take her and newt to the site under the reactor where the colonists were. They should have remained in operations and she could have advised from there. But then you don't have the same narrative that Cameron wanted.

"Aliens": Third Officer Ripley has been found and taken to Gateway station with a Xenomorph-size case of PTSD. What will The Weyland-Yutani Suits make of her blowing up the "Nostromo"? 3:35 You are watching the Special Edition version that I bought in 1990 as a Laserdisc(!). 9:07 Actor Jenette Goldstein is/was a bodybuilder, so pull ups were no sweat for her. Fluent in Spanish, she went to casting as a Latina gang member. (Origin of the "illegal alien" joke?) 12:00 Ripley shows Apone and Hicks that she isn't a front office paper shuffler like Burke, but a working class dog like themselves. 18:29 In 1986, I noticed that Ripley was able to "get close, quickly" to Rebecca, unlike the female Colonial Marines. A reviewer of the time said: "Sisterhood!" Looking at the 1990 SE Laserdisc, I confirmed that Ripley had been a parent. 20:58 Vasquez has spare fire control modules so the squad still has fire support. 34:08 The Manual of Arms. 41:08 They went out like Klingon warriors. 42:57 The right tool with Duck tape. 43:18 The studio-deleted "Dwayne and Ellen" scene. 45:02 The Egg Chamber. 45:57 Negotiation time. 49:27 Queen takes Bishop. 50:35 Battle of the Mothers. 53:05 on to the Assembly Cut of "Alien3" (1992)?

1:58 [16 weeks] eh yes and no. 3:42 Ah good the extended director's cut, good choice. 2:45 [16 weeks] mostly no. 3:48 none good. 5:05 yes yes we must find that your reckless, and we did no wrong so we can cover everything up. 5:53 60-70 x an avg of 4 = 240/280 people. 7:33 Yeah your right, I won't be going in with the troops, because I'm going to be right here, as in not there. Thanks for asking though. buh-bye. roll credits. 29:13 Deleted gun scene. All the scenes with the sentry guns were deleted from the theatrical version. then put back in for the director's cut. 33:16 there's a Deleted scene that didn't make it into any of the releases where Bishop gets to a small junction room and encounters an alien, It ignores Bishop because hes a robot and thus "not real". 38:15 No one ever said they weren't intelligent. Hive minded maybe, and cunning. 45:05 She wanted to know what was laying the eggs,... Wish granted. 50:03 Watch how strong this alien queen is, When it hits that massive blast door it causes the door to stop for a moment. 53:17 Well sort of yes, but all that is gone now. and it's not like you age. so whenever you get home you can start your life over and now Ripley gets to do so with a child again. All thanks to St. Burke. Time for Alien 3. (then trust me stop there)

I also enjoy how everyone thinks Hudson is so annoying - but by the end we all love him - and i think the character's development is because of Ripley's perfect leadership. And Burke.... look up the trivia about that actor Paul Reiser, and what his mother thought of the film!

27:20 "RUN!" the crashing ship is rear-projected on a motion picture screen behind the actors. And you can tell, if you know what you're looking at. A 50 year old technique (at least) by the time Aliens was made, and completely effective to audiences of 1986 (and I would say, still). You lose a generation of contrast and sharpness doing it that way, but you would also have that problem doing it using the bluescreen techniques of the time, too, plus fringes around the actors. If it ain't broke.... But that's a Gen-Xer talking. I'm just glad young people can see past the janky effects to thrill to the underlying story, which is a pretty good one. I think that still, today, it's a pretty good looking movie.
