Further to my issues noted at 5:58 during battery testing, Dell Technologies has been in touch to say that the blue screen experienced in this review would not have occurred with the latest driver software installed. The Dell team recommends that users use the pre-installed Support Assist function or visit their website to ensure devices are running with the most up-to-date software. My testing was done with the latest drivers available at the time of testing, however they believe this issue has since been resolved. Our original testing for this review was completed 2 months ago while this was investigated.

I just got stuck with a Dell g15 as a warranty replacement, 12700/3060 like in your most recent review of that model where you had all the problems. I can tell you that all of those problems remain including having to reinstall the Alienware center software at least a half a dozen times along with a number of other drivers and updates off the Dell support website. Even now after I have everything arguably working I still have to manually enable some Dell services from the services manager to get updates. Another interesting thing to note is that the Alienware center software does not work at all if you have the ram protection turned on in Windows security. No automatic overclocking unless you turn that off. All in all I would say it does not perform as smoothly as my 4-year-old G5 8950h/1060 that they refused to repair under warranty. Plus no stage expansion of course.

Got a x14 rtx 3060 32 gb ram. Here are a few things to read to anyone buying it. 1: Mention dell is easy to get support with whereas razer is useless and asus is very region dependant. also the x14 rtx3060 runs at 60 to 65 watts when gaming. 2:The memory overclocking works a little bit but the otherstuff does effectively nothing. I also had the same issue with the alienware command centre on my x14. 3: AWCC intially was not installed properly so I had to delete and redownload it twice. It works fine now though. Also the maybe mention the game dependant software performance and lighting settings (based on game being played) mapping in the AWCC software is kind of useful. 4: Real world battery life for those wondering is around 5 hours of school usage (chrome, youtube and word usage + spotify running) at around 60-70% brighteness. 5: Also I prop it up with little wooden blocks on the back rubber feet. It improves thermals a bit and also as a plus angles the keyboard better. 6: Also for everyday use mention lapabiltity cause this laptop is quite good. 7: the wrist issue about the keyboard is quite bad buy a wrist rest for most comfort. 8: forza horizon 5 doesnt work properly. need to go into the nvidia control panel and select some open gl setting then it works fine. Also limit the cpu to like 70% on battery in the power windows settings. Helps with battery if you care about. 9: you didn't mention the dolby settings. they are actually pretty decent to tune the speakers a bit.

Excellent review! One thing worth mentioning is warranty/support. In my region (EU), Dell offer on-site next business day warranty on all Alienware laptops. There is not a hope of any such support from either Asus or Razer, something definitely worth considering when spending on a premium laptop. This is perhaps the only gaming laptop in the world using a 130w adaptor. It can be a selling point, with energy crisis - especially in Europe getting worse. It's amazing how much performance you can get out of that little wattage. Also, the adaptor for XPS is the same as this laptop, you can also use MacBook Pro's 140w adaptor with this laptop. That's the advantage of using USB-C, it's available everywhere and it's smaller and lighter.

tbh though, his testing of those laptops' Linux support is somewhat vague. Nvidia GPUs drivers are known for being *really hard* to install for a newb (or even some experienced users) on most Linux distributions, not to mention that those drivers do not support some parts of Linux well enough (see: the Wayland display protocol). I still appreciate those tests, though, because the drivers can be taken care of if you use distros with Nvidia drivers already installed within, and there are more things than just the GPU (like the RGB, WiFi card, etc..) that need to be checked for Linux support

The CPU and GPU power numbers seem odd. And from what I've read on Notebookcheck. They measured both higher clock speeds and higher overall system power consumption. Though not much higher. They stated the maximum in CPU only testing was 100W then leveling at 55W. GPU power while gaming was at 70W. However in a combined stress test the CPU measured 30W while the GPU was at 60W according to their graphs. What's odd though, is that they measured 130w peak power from the wall before dropping to 115W. It should be noted, this was a European model and the surface tempuratures recorded were much higher around around 40C where the hands rest on the keyboard. Maybe it's possible that Dell is intentionally throttling the model you reviewed instead due to regulations, to prevent the keyboard area from getting so hot? If so, this is a poor design from Dell, and makes since because the cooler is flipped on top side of the motherboard. Meaning as dust and other contaminants accumulate in the cooler, I would expect the performance to get worse over time.

Honestly I can never bring myself to buy a Dell gaming laptop (whether the G15 or Alienware): 1. Unreliable and poor QA - this isn't the first time I've heard about random blue screens and things missing or damages out of the box. 2. Flipped motherboard - very difficult to access fans and CPU/GPU if you need to clean/repast 3. Alienware control panel - I'm yet to see a more clunky software 4. Price: G15 is priced fine (when on sale), but Alienware is always too expensive for what is offered. It's odd cause Dell's non-gaming / business laptops (XPS or even Inspiron) are good contenders usually 🤷🏻♂️

Doesn't this make the 14" useless due to the lift, and huge bezels on this thing? That chin, and the display being lifted is like an additional 2 inches. I wouldn't be surprised some 15 inch laptops being smaller.

I bought the x14 and returned it. 1. The fans were unbearable. The pitch was painful, and the fan curve bringing them up and down was much worse than if they had just remained on at a low speed. I found it distracting and annoying when doing work in PowerPoint, Excel, and a browser. Also the idea of “gaming” without headphones was impossible. due to the high fan pitch. Also the idea of gaming with another person in the room was laughable. 2. Comfort, for my average hands I found where the laptop ended cut into my wrist in a very uncomfortable way. Playing Dota 2 or DOOM was uncomfortable after a short time due to the awsd hands location. 3. Screen. I’ve realized that for a device I want to use for both productivity and gaming I really need 16:10 or more vertical real estate to be productive. I wanted to love this device, I had an Alienware M11x way back in 2011 or something and it was a fun little laptop. The build quality was good, much closer to Apple quality than most PCs. But the whole experience wasn’t there. The thing is the performance was great. It was the usability of the device that hindered it.

Other than the fan noise and the use of playing games on it, the x14 served well for you? Did you also end up purchasing another laptop-what did or would you buy?

@@mago3886 The Alienware machine was thin, sturdy, and well built. My main laptop is a 16" 2019 MacBook Pro, I boot it to Windows for Windows only games but the screen is only 60Hz. Overall my MacBook Pro is larger than I want for traveling, I have a desktop at home and I travel less than I used to since COVID. But the Alienware was actually much larger than a standard 14" laptop because of the hinge & port design. Jarrod talks about this and I think most users would be surprised by how much larger the Alienware actually is compared to other 14" laptops. It was basically the same physical dimensions as my 16" MacBook Pro. If I was going to buy a laptop right now I'd buy the 14" MacBook Pro, at this point I'd wait until the M2 updated models are released. For Windows there really isn't a device I feel meets my quality standards. I'd probably buy a Microsoft Surface Pro 9 Core i7 with DDR5 and the 120Hz display because I like the e-ink & Pen capabilities with OneNote and with DDR5 connected to the Intel Xe graphics is can play Dota 2 and Civ VI on lower quality settings and high FPS. It certainly wouldn't be able to play AAA games but I don't need that much while traveling and the 3:2 screen ratio is great to work on.

What is the best nvidia driver for this laptop? I installed the latest driver last month and it turns laggy for almost every single game like forza and fifa, then I install the original driver in dell driver's website and it backs normal, but i feel it's not the best driver for this laptop because sometimes (like once in 20 minutes) the game sounds brmmhhh like error sound in a sec then turns back normal. So what is the best nvidia driver version for this laptop? Help me pleaseee 🥺 🥺

Ngl I think this design seems a bit impractical, 14" in what looks like could fit a 15.6" screen , sure it's thin but the wideness is what keeps it from fitting in a backpack or slapping the wall you walk past. "Let's make a portable laptop and add a slab at the back that significantly increases the size so it's also now less portable and weaker because thinness is more important."

Carefull with cp77 benchmark, in my own personal experience and also observed in other people videos, the benchmark can turn upscaling on even when you have it off, or making ridiculous choices on "auto", like dlss ultra performance at 1080p.

Hi Jarrod!!! I'm Gustavo by the way and so, sorry to bother you... But I'm so sad, I had a trouble with my Alienware x14, then I had to recover it using the OS Recovery from (F12--->"SupportAssist OS Recovery"), there were two options: "Factory Recovery" & "Reset with Update", I choose the second one (it was a big mistake), this option only installed the update version of the OS but it did not factory apps (Control Centre for example), when I tried to recover it again with "Factory Recovery", this option was no longer available... Because of that, I beg you for help... Would you be so kind to make a disk clonning (using the same tool F12:"Support.." there is an option) from yours and share it to me (online), please, please? I already contacted support, but they told me: Unfortunately for this Alienware version is no longer possible a factory reset once we've done a Reset & Update (option Factory Reset is not longer available)... :(
