Somehow I found WNEW FM in the early 70's when I was in high school. What a great station, but she was the best of the best, actually the best ever! Hey, EVERY night was a dreamy night listening to you Alison!!

Alison Steele on WNEW brought about the beginning of the end for AM radio.

More accurate to say the 6 months or so in 1966-67 that WOR FM 98.7 went progressive, set the stage for WNEW FM 102.7 and later WABC FM/WPLJ 95.5 WOR FM hired Scott Muni, Rosko and Murray the K to launch their ambitious format, which showed some financial success, but not enough to continue being that cool. Alison was already doing a show on 102.7 as part of their “All Women Air Staff” format. She stayed on board, joined by Scottso, Rosko and others when the suits at WNEW decided they could adapt the “failed” WOR FM progressive effort but do it better. Man, they sure succeeded, didn’t they?

The best station ever in NYC in the 60s and 70s. WNEW FM..very unique in their programming, playing all the counterculture music that wasn't played on AM. Alison Steele at night..took you away.

Yes, but problem was they didn't get punk! Like Dylans Mr Jones!

@rasulf Yeah, punk and then New Wave and Power Pop was meant to shake up the by-then stodgy world of classic rock . . . but that wasn’t the big money-making format that radio stations had come to expect from CR the previous 8 years or so. Talk about fracturing and partitioning the radio audience!

Yeah man it didn’t get no better in the 60s 70s going into the early 80s then WNEW FM one027 where Rock lives that was the bumper sticker on my Trans Am and my guitar cases back in the day I could probably name you almost all the DJs on that station never will be anything like that ever again like Eddie money said I want to go back and do it all over but I can’t go back on no RIP NightBird, and to all of those DJs we lost those were special times

WNEW Metromedia Stereo in NY. Prog Rock in the '70s. From Scott Muni "the 5th Beatle", Pete Fornatale, Mark "the Cope" Coppola, the iconic Jonathan Schwartz, it was great FM stereo ending the day with Alison "The Nightbird" Steele. Great memories

Back in high school, I started listening to 92.3 KRock in NYC because of Howard Stern and came across this gem of a human being that had the most soothing voice I've ever heard. I still remember turning the stereo in my bedroom on low volume and falling asleep listening to her voice.

I was in my early teens when I discovered that soothing voice coming on the air at night. She really helped ease the angst and anxiety of adolescence. Seems like mostly guys responding here, did she appeal to Women also? Or was her fan-based mostly male? RIP Alison, fly free forever, Nightbird.

I didn't remember that her voice was as raspy as it is here. "We're going to play a little bit of Rickj Wakeman", proceeds to play both of his albums released at that time all the way through.

Interesting music isn’t it? There’s absolutely nothing like this happening these days, experimental, carefully crafted, all-instrumental music. I feel lucky to grow up in a time like that, with more experimentation.
