That is (at least for people who have read the comic book, imho) the only one sensible and informed review of that movie I found. I've got the feeling that the people who gush for the movie (I have no propblem with that) haven't read the manga while those familiar with it tend to judge it in a more restrained way. The source material has a depth und richness you wouldn't guess from the movie.

If you wanna put it dragonball z terms, they mixed two sagas together. The manga very abruptly changes directions each arc, but the film makes it all flow better. I think Cameron does do a good job at making fantasy worlds easy to understand, where the manga needs long text sections in the back of the collected editions to fully explain everything. When something is live action, you accept "that's there because it looks cool" a lot less.

I'm born 1983, I grew up with Star Zinger, Cobra, Cyborg 009 and Alita. Alita is just like for you, one of my all time favorite stories and while I don't disagree with most of what you're saying I think you're being a bit over sensitive on a few points. A) Iron city is to bright, safe and cheerful. Totaly agree on this part, this is actually the biggest problem I had with the movie. This I obviously don't disagree with, just needed to mention it up front cuz that's my main contention with the movie. B) Ido being to much of a father figure. This I disagree with quite a bit, as you say he has a way darker side they're not showing in the film but his love for Alita doesn't feel disingenuous, they simply left the dark part out which would have been a plus if they kept it in but imo is not necessarily a minus when they leave out. Again, this is a film not a series and Ido is not the main character. C) Giving Alita his daughters body and name doesn't strike me as creepy but more as a sign of moving on, accepting his daughter is gone and instead of letting her body go to waste he gives it so someone else can live... Kinda like an organ doner. D) Too much motorball, yea compared to what should've been in there it is, but it's an adaptation. I point this out in my review as well, I don't even remember it being in the anime and when I read the Manga I was so young I mainly looked at the pictures but I can understand why it's there and it doesn't really make the film worse aside from not exploring the rest of the world but I don't think there would be time to effectively do that anyway so they might as well fill that gap with cool action. E) The whole no one goes to Zalem thing, yea it's stupid but it's really just a throw away line making no difference really in the movie except leaving the audience with the belief that maybe she got there and got her revenge. If there's a sequal they have a springboard if not it left the audience with and open ending and either way it didn't really change the fundamental storyline... Good point about the destruction of property tho, changing the rules of motorball might just end up in a Riot as it would be taking away the hope and dreams of people but even in this world she's still a felon. F) Nova in the machine. Yea, can't really argue with this one except that I think Ali did shine... He got way to little screen time but boy was he the spitting image of Vector and his death scene was Oscar worthy, how he manage to act as if he was actually dying with a totaly indifferent face was brilliant "well... That looks fatal..." fakkin fantastic acting. G) If Nova sends the ring or if it was bad luck doesn't really matter, Yugos obsession got him killed no matter if it was luck or by Nova which is why I don't care all that much how they changed Yugos character. In the anime he is, to be perfectly honest, a bit of a selfish cunt. In the movie he seem to actually care for Alita (granted his acting wasn't all that good in comparison to Waltz, Connolly, Ali or Salazar but he was servicable). A change very drastic to his character. But the Japanese reverence for following youre dream *literally* no matter what doesn't fly in the west so I understand why they made this change. Just to be clear, I don't think you're *wrong* at any point here... I just think that on most points you're to much of a fan and get hung up on things that are not really that important or logical changes considering the format. Overall I'd say you give a fair review, everything you say is true... I just think it gives off an unnecessarily negative vibe for a movie you actually like... Atleast it sounds like you like it, you just wish you'd liked it even more.

I am back to tell you this take is really basic and unfair to Alita. Kishiro called the screenplay a masterpiece and was very happy with the changes made in adapting his work for cinema. Thank god it wasn't a bleak, dark, gritty exact copy of the manga as you manga supremacists wanted or it wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable as it was! It's a masterpiece, if you support Alita you should have supported it. Shame Vito, still kind of a fan though I haven't watched you much since this.

I could of also done without the "Love Interest" shoehorned in for apparently no reason. Overall, the movie was just ok...and I was left with the impression that there was a lot left out to stay under some arbitrary run-time. Hopefully there is an "Extended Director's Cut", a la Kingdom of Heaven. Kingdom of Heaven suffered from similar problems (Shallow Character Development, Events Happening Rapid-Fire with little Build Up....but if you get the Blue Ray "Director's Cut"...What A Difference! Besides the problems you mentioned, I also don't like that they combined the prologue and 3 vastly distinctive and individual manga arcs (Makaku, Hugo, Motorball) in a single 2-hour movie. Each arc had its own main antagonist/villain, themes, character development, and climax in the original manga. That's the equivalent of adapting 2 or 3 Harry Potter books with one movie, to put it into a more mainstream perspective. Because of that, they ended up repeating the OVAs' mistakes , instead of fixing them. And like you said, GUNNM/Alita is honestly more violent than most R-rated movies. It really takes away from the story that they toned down how violent, brutal, and shitty the world they lived in is. Going from a Mad Max to Margaritaville was a mistake.

Alita is a flawed film but It has more positives than negatives. I really enjoyed the film, and I am a longtime fan of the manga and OVA. Sure Iron City could look grittier, sure rollerball could’ve been saved for a sequel and sure some character development could have been better. But Alita delivered solid action, Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz were excellent, the visuals and music were impressive, the story worked for the most part and the movie truly felt like an anime come to life. There was a lot of passion behind the project and it shows on screen. From what I heard the initial script was 300 pages but it had to be trimmed down to 120 pages to comply with movie run time standards. I guess a 3hr Alita movie was too risky financially, I do wish we got that version though.

Iron city felt like some late 90s early 2000s movie where everything is a party and people are randomly wearing leather/vinal jackets or pants. Like something straight from the spy kids movies or the scooby doo movies. And the Motor Ball scenes felt like they were trying to copy Speed Racer, especially since it's the better rated anime movie. What I think they wanted to do is merge Nova and Bigott for some stupid reason, with ARs being Nova's EVUL PLAN, and all about Salemite brainchips will go out of the window, as well as the rest of the setting and most Last Order stuff. But this is just a theory.

Alita battle angel is awesome, if anything it's underrated and deserves more credit and respect. This movie (along with Wonder woman, alien, and terminator 1 and 2) showed us what a female lead can be and should be. The only reason it didn't catch on was because the media was fear mongering the movie to make captain misandrist look good which resulted in lefties calling it a movie for the alt right, which honestly is bullshit. Lefties complain about how "there isn't enough diversity with film making and acting" well news flash, the director of this movie, Robert Rodriguez, is a latino man who made this movie happen and the lead role for alita/gally (if you read the manga or watched the 1996 OVA) was played by latino actress Rosa Salazar. This movie was about a diverse as it got but they didn't take it because lefties don't really care about what they say they're fighting for.

Finally a voice of reason. Most people on imdb are giviing it a 9 or 10 just because the movie is pretty, and because of her big eyes. So freaking what. It's barely above the marvel movies they claim it's better than. Why isn't it R rated? Gimme some actual dystopia and juicy themes, ya cowards.

Also idk what you guys are talking about alita had a 404 million profit. I get it wierdos who live for manga and that anime sh*t really dislike it but it was the best animation movie that is based on a manga period.

Not being aware of the manga, I did and really do not suffer from "the let down" of subtleties and complexities missing in the translation of manga to film. However, what you have described does seem to present a fuller and more engaging narrative and your cynical observations which should be threatening to someone who really liked the movie to the tune of 5 theater trips, are simultaneously rewarding and hilarious. Here's the thing though, and it may be true for you as well, while there's more than a bit of fluffiness (think marshmallow creme), there's a pretty strong adherence to plausible science (cargo shorts notwithstanding) AND a complete paradigm shift from implausibly bestowed "super powers" (ad infinitum et ad nauseum) to what could really be a human condition 500 years in the future! Yes, yes you'll find holes in this logic if you want. Thanks for the super fun review and I'm only here for the girl.

Everything in this movie is subtle and allegories, which is why it’s so brilliant. 1) Today in America, the strong still prey on the weak. Big time. It’s more physical in the manga, but in the movie (and today), it’s what’s unseen. 2) For Ido, the father-figure was a huge change, because in the Manga, it was more of a pet/friend/older brother relationship. It was never really a father figure relationship. Since the movie decided on Alita’s self discovery as the main theme, it was a good decision to make her grow in her relationship with her father figure. They sacrificed manga Ido’s motives, to one in which they could tie Chiren into the movie and make her story more compelling. 3) Motorball was also a brilliant decision because it’s what ties all the major characters together and interweaves their motives.. Ido, Chiren, Vector, Hugo. It’s a awesome move to make a 2hr movie viable with all these different threads. 4) The reason why she registered as a bounty hunter was to recruit other hunters to kill Grewiska before he killed her and Ido. It was the only legal way to do it. 5) Yes, he has a better way because he doesn’t have to raise money. Vector promised him already to send him to Zalem if he got her to play motorball. 6) She was forced to adhere to the hunter code immediately after your cut... forced to kill Hugo. This is when she learns the reality of it. This also a huge turning point in her character arc because she is justified finding out he was a murderer/jacker. Zapan’s impatience stabbing Hugo backfires in giving Alita an opportunity to regroup and find another way. If he waited, she might have been forced to actually do it against her will... we will never know. 7) Motorball was also used to show her growth as a warrior. 8) Final champion is a false hope, having people glued to the game of motorball that controls the population. 9) Nova is not afraid of Alita by the slightest… it’s clear when she faces him/Vector before he kills him. So having her as final champion and going to Zalem is something that he might want… 10) In a 2 hour movie, you would have how much time to explain all these different villian’s role. Having 2 as the puppet of 1 is understandable. And the main villain in the movie is Alita’s own naivety and immaturity. 11) Karma of Hugo had to be given up because they had focus the movie on Alita’s perspective. And Nova is NOT a god. He’s a false god.. He’s more inline with Satan… 12) The last 3 minutes were the epilogue. They movie makers made her journey of self discovery the main plot. From the first scene with her thrown out as junk in a trash pile to her as a warrior with a mission in the last scene is the story arc. Hope you had seen all this and can enjoy the movie a lot more!

I absolutely agree with everything you said. The character growth of Alita (and Hugo, going from a seemingly though street thug to an emotional kid in the end) is one of the best since they don't shove it up your face like in other movies. A naive teenager in the beginning, an elite warrior and emotional wreck in the end, entering a motorball game without a helmet. Sure, the movie has some minor flaws, but what movie doesn't? This movie is not trying to be something it is not. A true original. Can't wait for a sequel.

I have no idea why everyone loves it so much, I hate this movie for all the reasons you listed and a couple more - how can you know all the bad points and still say at the end 'but it was ok'? Like you I dreamt of a perfect Battle Angel movie since it was my favorite manga in my youth. But for me it was clear that Hollywood couldn't do it. To many movies these days are just superficial. Battle Angel is 1 of them, but good enough to be above average and I'm thankful that I could enjoy it despite its flaws. After seeing this movie, I'm really curious if the can get Alitas quest to become human (and the philosophical question " when does a man become human?") right. For this part Motorball would be pretty important, especially Jashugan as milestone and mentor. There are such strong scenes in the manga. I mean, they have the chance to film the most important arm wrestling match since Over The Top ;o) . If they do just the generic action shit and show Desty Nova just as another evil dictatorlike villain. I would be pretty disappointed, though I like the cast vor Nova. I think Norton could play the manga Nova pretty well, but we'll see.

Please quit your dayjob and do videos full time. You know, I'm tryin to be a normal guy, im pretty fit, do sports, I talk to girls and shit and give my best to just appear to be a normal dude and fit in. But in my heart, I'm a fuckin cynical nerd and rarely do I come across a piece of media, entertainment, heck, any kind of sensory stimulus that is thorough, consistent, intelligent, intriguing and dark enough, sharing my nihilistic view of the world and existence of itself that it truly satisfies me. You, my man, have accomplished this feat. Your videos touch me in a way for which I usually belittle and laugh at people, when they say "this or that touched them really deep" (bla, pretentious bullshit). But no, you see things the way I do and makes me feel good not being the only dork in a sea full of dumbness. Please never quit making videos. Better yet, maybe do some triple A level media sometimes? Work your way up man and create some media better than what is offered us now on the big screen or on any platform for that matter and you'll do great. Keep it up man!
