Honestly it seems to me that Fromsoft really wants to make like, viable ways to use consumables in combat in their games but (maybe with sekiro as an exception) it seems they're also terrified of making them anywhere near good because they're worried about how to balance them. Melee weapons can scale on any stat, can do any status effect, can do high poise damage, have some powerful ashes, and these days even have ranged options! Spells have some advantages here and there but have to deal with FP use Bows and consumables have to contend with farming or spending runes on items which is just an extra chore to do something a weapon can do freely and infinitely And then you have to deal with limited uses per fight and even items that are finite in game (or extremely annoying to farm with low drop rates) Sometimes it feels like a completely different team designed the consumables and balanced them on a completely different methodology, not realizing swords exist

You can activate/deactivate the flame throwing pillars in the base game dungeons. 3. The thing where you can change mohg (probably? i never used the item for the intende way) 4. New in the dlc for the sealed spirit springs i just go where the jump point is and use it and it unlocks it (for some reason in a huge area) 5. Also new in the dlc if you are near one of the pots with the bell bearings instead of shooting them down you can use the shackle and the bell bearing will drop. so no aim and shooting needed! 6. ???

i think that these highlight a sort of fundamental flaw with the ER consumables that will never allow them out of meme tier in regards to damage or utility. the best possible use case i can think of for a craftable magic item is a ranged / elemental damage option for str or dex builds without access to spellcasting, basically the same niche as grease or pots. but linking the scaling to the relevant elemental stat means tying their most effective builds to characters that already have access to those abilities. they should either be flat damage or scale with the melee stats.

It's such a shame that Miyazaki made this whole new weird magic archetypes (White Lightning from Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword, Putrescence Cleaver blue flame, Sword of Night), yet there is no consumables about them. Like, we already have several different bairn consumables in the base game already. What's the point of adding yet another one? They could have just made Horned Bairn a bit more blue, call it Putrescence Bairn or whatever, and make it have frostbite buildup. Which is at least somewhat useful since Frostbite is a bit rarer for incantation builds. Hell, why not make it scale with Arcane so that it would synergize with Putrescence Cleaver. Idk it needs something Instead it's so awkward right now, and its sole purpose is to roll catch in PvP. Which is fine but, you know, not as thematically cool.
