@Stephen Taylor he was. If you read the books with that in mind, you can clearly see his machinations. Harry even says to Ron and Hermione while he's recovering from fighting Quirrel that he thinks Dumbledore set up all the obstacles as a test for him. Dumbledore was the reason he was raised by the Dursleys. Harry, as the son of a pureblood was related to everyone in the discarding world including the Weasleys. But Dumbledore needed Harry abused and unwanted so he'd be malleable and easy to control. Dumbledore was by no means a good person. A great wizard, yes. Be he was an awful, manipulative human being who set Harry up to be a pig for slaughter, just as Snape accused Dumbledore of doing.

With "stopper death", I think Snape was referring to powerful healing potions that can cure ailments that would otherwise kill you. And Polyjuice potion only changes appearance. Though I suppose using some ingredients related to a phoenix there might be resurrection potions, though unlike Voldemort's body-making potion, it would probably have to be used before death to be reborn as a younger person. @@xy-ow7hw I don't think either Dumbledore or Snape knew how to do that, but it's possible that he was indeed referring to that, since the Philosopher's Stone itself, while not being a potion, is an alchemical creation. I think it’s really cool to see the adaptation of the philosophers stone in pop culture. As a historian I have studied the history of alchemy, science, and witchcraft and their relation to each other for the majority of my professional life and have taught history of alchemy in various classes. One thing I see in common is the thought that the philosophers stone is an actual stone. When in reality it’s a kind of metaphor and it is actually a kind of liquid. I guess an elixir or potion of sorts (I like to think that is what Snape is talking about). And in fact it doesn’t have two different functions but one and that was to create “purity”. Alchemists of old thought that immortality was purity in human form but gold was purity of substance because they observed that it didn’t degrade in salt water. That’s my little bit and I haven’t taught that particular class in a while but if my memory serves me correctly that is the gist of the philosophers stone. Like the videos by the way!

Ignis Natura Renovatur Integra If only people realized how much science owes to those schools of thought, and if only we could re-merge them... He's always making spagyria and apparently they are very powerful for remedy, but it's not magic, it's essentially garage pharmaceuticals but with purer ingredients! The goal of the stone was to get the purest form of matter - the idea being you could also purify yourself and remove disease, age, etc. It depends on if you believe it is a spiritual metaphor or a physical process, some seemed to believe both.

So isn’t the essence of the story that immortality is NOT possible? By all the described methods, all of them are reversible. Doesn’t matter if you extend your life with Horcruxes, the philosopher’s stone or unicorns blood, at the end of the day you can still be killed in a certain way.

All forms of immortality in the series has some form of drawback. Philosopher's Stone: you have to routinely drink the Elixir of Life in order to maintain your immortality the same way as taking meds, which can be problematic in the event you're somehow distanced from it (like if it was stolen or out of stock), and it doesn't make you invincible. Horcruxes: accounts for eternal life and invinvibility (in a way), however, if your body is destroyed you wind up an intangible spirit trapped to the earth and out of luck if you don't know how to make an artificial body, plus the act of creating horcruxes requires cold blooded murder and borders on self-harm. Ghosts: eternal life, however, all physical sensation is no more and you're stuck at the physical, mental, and emotional state and development as you're were when you died; only wizards and witches can become ghosts, however, becoming one is somewhat shameful as only ones truly scared of death become ghosts and apparently there's no take-backsies, so there's no chance of crossing over. Unicorn Blood: as Frienze said, unicorn blood can save you even if you're an inch from death, however, slaying something as pure as a unicorn will give you a cursed life, and what that entails just makes you not want to know.

One specifically had 206, one for every part of his own skeletal remains that were spread over the world. Imagine if Voldermort had 206 Horcruxes that could fully revive him after his death without any assistance. He knew of its and Flamels existence, so he knew it was possible to create the stone, why didn't he pursue making it himself (or with Quirrel)? According to Dumbledore, Voldemort didn't want to be dependent on something like Elixir of Life, because he would have to drink it constatntly and never stop, which was danger if let's say the stone was stolen (it was famous, horcruxes basicaly unknown) or the Elixir would be corrupted somehow. I guess, that if you start to drink it even at the young age and healthy, you have to continue to drink it or you die even if young and healthy.

Voldemort's rudimentary body potion could be one way for ghosts to return to the world of the living. If they could find someone to help them then they they could first return in the form of a rudimentary body, then take the extra step by creating a regeneration potion as Voldemort did at Little Hangleton Graveyard. That's one way I could see someone achieving immortality, by retaining their spectral form after they've died and then finding someone to help them go through these two steps to resurrect themselves over and over.

The Polyjuice Potion doesn't stop death. In Harry Potter: And the Goblet of Fire, it's stated that Barty Crouch Jr.'s Mother was dying and they smuggled her into Azkaban, and smuggled him out via Polyjuice Potion. And she made sure to take the potion up until her passing. Since dementors are blind, they wouldn't have seen her change back, since her body was buried on the Azkaban grounds. There are multiple ways to translate the meaning behind Snape's words "stopper death": 1. Stop someone from dying. Either an antidote or a healing potion. 2. Prolonging one's life with potions, which is the meaning you went with. 3. Doing the exact opposite... brewing deadly potions. Although I doubt Snape would teach it to students, there's no doubt he could easily brew extremely deadly poisons. After all, putting a stopper on something means you close it in, usually in a bottle. Remember Snape's puzzle before entering the room with the Mirror of Erised? Some of the potions were deadly poison... death that had been stoppered.

I don't think that's correct; yes the language of the sentence means he is referring to the potion as 'death', but doesn't that mean that by 'putting a stopper in death', he is metaphorically referring to STOPPING death. I think that your interpretation only makes sense if he is talking entirely literally, but we KNOW he isn't, because the sentence before is 'brew fame, bottle glory' has to be at least somewhat metaphorical. Therefore, why wouldn't the 'stopper in death' also be metaphorical. And, if it is a metaphor, then by 'putting a stopper in death', he must be referring to a potion or potions that can, in some way, STOP death. Just as the stopper stops the potion from escaping, whatever he's referring to would prevent your own death, or mortality, from becoming reality.

Theoretical way to achieve near-perfect immortality in the HP universe (though the difficulty is 'nightmare' lol) Make a horcrux. Then invent either a way to completely claim a new body, or to recreate your body without outside assistance (Voldy would be fucked without his followers). Since you can return on your own, the horcrux is now your only weakness. So it must be an indestructible, or impossible-to-reach object. As a bonus, you can drink the elixir of life to preserve your current body for a longer time (if the horcrux bond doesn't stop your aging). Or, if you're an even greater mage, find a way to steal a phoenix's rebirth ability. No object to call a weakness. Though, you might have to find a way to preserve your memories if the rebirth also resets your mind. And maybe a fastened growing, if you're not interested in repeating the entire maturing process every time.
@frantisekvrana3902
Жыл бұрын
The phoenix rebirth ability would revert you to a baby. Even if you kept your mind, you would have trouble doing anything for a few years. It would be best to have an ally, preferably one who underwent the same procedure, to take care of you and/or age you up. And of course bottled memories, just in case it does not let you keep your mind. Bottled memories are a thing in HPverse. You'd want to update your backup every so often, and also have several backups in case someone destroys one.

If pensives were easy to create, time travel would be the best way to retain youth. Just put your memories in a container for your younger self, have them use the pensive, and while you yourself won't be alive after you die, your younger self will have all your memories up to the point you handed your memories off to them. They'll do what they will with your memories, but you'll technically be living through your younger self. Have your younger self do the same, and you can live through yourself repeatedly via memories within memories. Super Inception.

While not something you could just choose to do, what about a really talented metaphorphmagi that could just keep reverting their own age, they could target specific body parts to change into a healthier state as long as they have the time to fix it. Also another more luck of the draw method would be to become an animagus with an animal that can resist death. Whether or not a phoenix animagus is possible, there are real world animals that can live forever under certain conditions. There are jellyfish that can revert into their baby stage when severely wounded or really old, lobsters can live forever so long as they can change their outer shell, and the sea-bear can survive any harsh conditions by going into a hibernation.

I think the murder just makes a "crack" in the soul. You have to take the piece manually through a spell. Then every 10 years or so, whip up a batch of polyjuice using your own hair to transform yourself into your younger self. Also, Fred and George whipped up a potion to make them older in Goblet of Fire. So one could assume it may be possible to make a reverse aging potion as well. Insofar as Snape's "stopper death" remark, he could simply have been talking about healing potions or potions that cure terminal illnesses. With Polyjuice, a hair is still needed to complete the transformations. Hair grows and dies, it gets split ends. Also, how do you polyjuice someone who has gone bald? It never tells us that Polyjuice can be used with other forms of DNA otherwise, why use hair every single time? The books tell us that people under Polyjuice don't have their original voices, Harry, Ron, Barty Crouch Jr etc. So the the presumably the DNA changes. Also, how does it affect puberty? What happens to your own body if you're constantly taking the form of someone else. We only really see it happen twice, in books 2 and 6. Crouch and trio use it after they're all seventeen; the end of puberty. It's a lot to unpack.

Though it does not outright say it, I believe the phrase “stopper death” is referring to the draft of living death made in half blood prince. Stopper does not mean stop it means to bottle. He could quite literally mean he can teach you how to bottle death. That’s how I took it at least.

In theory, one could try and eternally loop their Body in a closed temporal displacement. Meaning your body ages to a certain point, then regresses back to a previous point, before displacing itself forward and aging regularly again. Infinite life.

I don’t think the horcux itself is actually necessary for revival. It’s explained that the horcrux serves as an anchor, a tether to the living world. Not necessarily as a respawn point. The one time we see someone die with a horcrux, Voldemort, his soul doesn’t snap to any of his horcruxes. His soul is disembodied and he survives by possessing different bodies, mostly snakes up until he meets Quirrell. Then he’s revived by wormtail who is doing what Voldemort tells him, and the revival has nothing to do with the horcruxes. In his revival, the function of the horcruxes was simply to prevent his soul from carrying on and allowing him to interact with wormtail to get his body back. Not once do we see disembodied Voldemort attempt to use the horcruxes, I believe because they served their purpose in anchoring him to the living world. He didn’t try to use them to revive himself because that wouldn’t have worked. We do see, in one instance, a horcrux (the diary) trying to revive itself and I’m massively interested in what would have happened if it had. In the books, Diary Riddle found out all about what happened to the original Voldemort through Ginny but he wasn’t a live link to that version of Voldemort. It was as if that fragment of soul was Voldemort as he was, with the memories he had at the time of making that horcrux. If Diary Riddle had successfully returned to life by using Ginny’s life force, would he have become a second version of Voldemort? Or would the disembodied Voldemort have returned to life through reuniting with Diary Riddle? Would they have fought, or been allies? Unfortunately we never see another horcrux attempt to bring the fragment of Voldemort’s soul inside it back to life.
